When Scientology Lost Tax Exempt Status

Scientology tax exemption struggles with the IRS and litigation in the Tax Court. A U.S. District Court may have been a better forum choice but it may not have changed the end result. I discuss the Tax Court's unusual opinion and why the IRS won. Both parties displayed bad behavior. All references to "section 501" are references to section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code. Note that both Scientology and Bob Jones U eventually restored their tax exempt status. The IRS or Scientology may comment by sending an email.
