Most of the people working in tech and medical fields in US are from India and they obviously speak good English. Infact Indian English is one of the clearest out there. Most Indians are fluent in multiple languages including English.

I mean as an Indian living in Netherlands, its always good to learn the language of the land cuz learning a new language opens a whole lot of opportunities, you can communicate with people, you can learn more about their culture etc...but at the same time people of the community should also be respectful and understanding if the other person cant speak their language...
i know this comment is two years old but it is different with the US because there isn’t actually an official national language there like many other countries. English isn’t the ‘American’ language because there are plenty of languages commonly spoken in the United States

Just because in certain specific areas there might be a decent number of people that speak other languages, doesn't mean it's not necessary to learn at least a little English to live here. Almost everyone born in the US speaks English as their first language and most people don't speak a second language. Just because English isn't a legal requirement to become a citizen doesn't mean it's fine to not even attempt to learn and expect other people to speak your language. That's just plain rude if you're going to be living in a country where most people only speak 1 language. American tv, books, products, schools, etc all use only English for the most part. There might be some places where Spanish is also an option, but not in the majority of areas. I've been a retail worker and only a few people in my area speak a second language. It's a huge hassle when I get a decent number of customers that don't speak any English and expect me to know their language when I'm from an English speaking country. Then I either have to get out my phone and try to use a translation app or call one of our few other employees who happens to be bilingual. It's a huge time waster and puts me in an awkward position because I have no way of understanding what the other person wants. Of course you should always be polite to people but if it's a person who comes to a country and expects everyone else to cater to them, they're the ones being inconsiderate. Especially because of my own experiences, I would never live in another country without learning the language. I plan to move to Japan, but I won't live there until I can speak at least decent Japanese. I know most people there don't speak English, so I'll do the polite thing and learn their language.

If you move to an English speaking country, the it's only considerate to learn at least a little English so you can speak with the locals, order at restaurants, buy things in grocery stores, etc. If you can't communicate with anyone, how do you expect to do anything? I mostly just speak English, but if I moved to Germany, France, Japan, Russia, etc, I would learn their language, at least enough so that I can speak to the people that live there. It's called being considerate. I would never go to another country, refuse to learn at least a bit of their language, and expect them to know English. Doesn't matter who you are or what language you speak. I actually have some Brazilian friends who came here to study/work and didn't know a word in English and they turned out pretty well. Now they both speak perfect English and are effectively working as doctors (they came to do their medical residency)

You shouldn't be shocked. For all we know, even if he's not Latino and has no Hispanic ancestry, he might've chosen to learn Spanish in high school, college, in the military, or for a civilian job. Or, he might indeed be straight-up part or fully Latino. Spanish is not just a language, and being Hispanic is not so much a race but a culture (food, art, music, etc). I'm a white guy of western & eastern Euro descent, but there are Spaniards, Portuguese, other Latinos and those with Latin ancestry who are paler than I am. Cameron Diaz and Melissa Villasenor (SNL) are a good celeb examples, and I used to work with a guy who is first-gen Spanish-American, but is a Bruce Willis look-alike. 😄

Actually Spanish is often easier to learn than English. Spanish like so many other languages has structure and consistency. We dont understand how hard it is for people who have another first language to read and learn English. We need to we helpful. Absolutely learning any other language is hard. (But the lack of normal structure and grammatical consistency make English so tough to learn if it's not your first language. We can be more compassionate about it.

Exactly. They get on my nerves with that MESS. My children's father is from El Salvador heck even their language is a combination of Spanish language and NAtive Indigenous Nautu combined. In his case, he is 100% Pipil. So their dialect is not even the same through out that country alone, so it sure isnt the same in Mexico. I was taught at 12 years of age, Mexico has over 72 dialects ALONE and some still speak their original language the Aztec Nautu tongues. Why does someone that speaks spanish GOT TO COME FROM Mexico? My Great Grandparents are from Spain. They speak Castilian which is Spanish. Much of Central and South America is based on the great Empires such as the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Incan. The Caribbean are of Native Nations as well. All I know we inhabit the same earth and many languages are spoken. We are all human and come from all back grounds and we should respect them All. And we have the right to speak whatever language we wish without being ridiculed.

I actually kind of agree with Tracy in a way. I'm a world traveler and every time I go to a different country, I either try to learn a few words or use Google Translate because expecting people to speak my language is silly. I'm German, I went to University in the US. I think it is more about racism than anything. Never once had anyone given me shit about about speaking German but, I've seen plenty of people complain about Spanish. The irony was I was just a couple 100 of miles away from Canada. There was never anyone speaking Spanish.

I go to Hong Kong, Philippines & South Korea and never once has anyone said I needed to know the language. They always treated me with respect and we both made efforts on both sides.
A few years ago I was clothes shopping at the store with my mom speaking Spanish to her, when two ladies passed by and said if you’re gonna be in America learn to speak American, my poor little mama oblivious to what they said asked me what they had said, instead of telling her the truth I lied and told her they had said they liked the shirt she was holding. I had never experienced racism first hand until that day.

I’m hispanic and went to the store with my grandmother one day with my mom as well. The similar situation happened to us with the employee. they were so harsh to my grandmother who only spoke Spanish so she didn’t know what they were saying. My mom and I were having a heated argument with the employee and I ended up calling corporate and she ended up being fired the next day

Most of the people working in tech and medical fields in US are from India and they obviously speak good English. Infact Indian English is one of the clearest out there. Just because in certain specific areas there might be a decent number of people that speak other languages, doesn't mean it's not necessary to learn at least a little English to live here. Almost everyone born in the US speaks English as their first language and most people don't speak a second language. Just because English isn't a legal requirement to become a citizen doesn't mean it's fine to not even attempt to learn and expect other people to speak your language. That's just plain rude if you're going to be living in a country where most people only speak 1 language.
American tv, books, products, schools, etc all use only English for the most part. There might be some places where Spanish is also an option, but not in the majority of areas. I've been a retail worker and only a few people in my area speak a second language. It's a huge hassle when I get a decent number of customers that don't speak any English and expect me to know their language when I'm from an English speaking country. Then I either have to get out my phone and try to use a translation app or call one of our few other employees who happens to be bilingual. It's a huge time waster and puts me in an awkward position because I have no way of understanding what the other person wants. Of course you should always be polite to people but if it's a person who comes to a country and expects everyone else to cater to them, they're the ones being inconsiderate. Especially because of my own experiences, I would never live in another country without learning the language. I plan to move to Japan, but I won't live there until I can speak at least decent Japanese. I know most people there don't speak English, so I'll do the polite thing and learn their language.

If you move to an English speaking country, the it's only considerate to learn at least a little English so you can speak with the locals, order at restaurants, buy things in grocery stores, etc. If you can't communicate with anyone, how do you expect to do anything? It's not fair to make everyone around you try and figure out what you're saying when you were the one who moved to their country. The same can be said for English speakers. I mostly just speak English, but if I moved to Germany, France, Japan, Russia, etc, I would learn their language, at least enough so that I can speak to the people that live there. It's called being considerate. I would never go to another country, refuse to learn at least a bit of their language, and expect them to know English. Doesn't matter who you are or what language you speak. If you move to other people's country, you should make at least some effort to be part of their culture so you can talk to the people around you.

For all we know, even if he's not Latino and has no Hispanic ancestry, he might've chosen to learn Spanish in high school, college, in the military, or for a civilian job.

As a Spanish speaker i do agree that English is very important to learn when you go to a foreign country, but not because you owe the courtesy to learn it but because thanks to the language you open yourself to a lot of more opportunities and you open yourself the opportunity to meet fantastic people around the world. Exactly. They get on my nerves with that MESS. My children's father is from El Salvador heck even their language is a combination of Spanish language and NAtive Indigenous Nautu combined. In his case, he is 100% Pipil. So their dialect is not even the same through out that country alone, so it sure isnt the same in Mexico. I was taught at 12 years of age, Mexico has over 72 dialects ALONE and some still speak their original language the Aztec Nautu tongues. Why does someone that speaks spanish GOT TO COME FROM Mexico? Like that is THE ONLY spanish speaking country in central America.

My Great Grandparents are from Spain. They speak Castilian which is Spanish. Much of Central and South America is based on the great Empires such as the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Incan. The Caribbean are of Native Nations as well. All I know we inhabit the same earth and many languages are spoken. We are all human and come from all back grounds and we should respect them All. And we have the right to speak whatever language we wish without being ridiculed.

I actually kind of agree with Tracy in a way. I'm a world traveler and every time I go to a different country, I either try to learn a few words or use Google Translate because expecting people to speak my language is silly. This couple knows that most people in America don't speak Spanish. For them to not even try to be a little bit accommodating is rude on their part.
It"s funny how Americans are like 'speak English' but they aren't able to speak an other language themselves and some of them who move to an other county don't even bother to learn the languages of that country cause almost everyone speaks English.

I don't understand why people get to riled up when they hear others talking in their native tongue. I'm bilingual and I get really excited when I have the chance to talk to another person who speaks my mother tongue. It's not to spite you or anything, we're just chilling, talking in our language. It's not that deep.

I'm German, I went to University in the US. I think it is more about racism than anything. Never once had anyone given me shit about about speaking German but, I've seen plenty of people complain about Spanish. The irony was I was just a couple 100 of miles away from Canada. There was never anyone speaking Spanish.

I go to Hong Kong, Philippines & South Korea and never once has anyone said I needed to know the language. They always treated me with respect and we both made efforts on both sides.
A few years ago I was clothes shopping at the store with my mom speaking Spanish to her, when two ladies passed by and said if you’re gonna be in America learn to speak American, my poor little mama oblivious to what they said asked me what they had said, instead of telling her the truth I lied and told her they had said they liked the shirt she was holding. I had never experienced racism first hand until that day.

I’m hispanic and went to the store with my grandmother one day with my mom as well. The similar situation happened to us with the employee. they were so harsh to my grandmother who only spoke Spanish so she didn’t know what they were saying. My mom and I were having a heated argument with the employee and I ended up calling corporate and she ended up being fired the next day
