I have a deeper appreciation for Harmony of Dissonance's music. Apparently the team sacrificed quality sounding music for better graphics and that led to the music sounding really distorted and more like a Game Boy game than a GBA one. But weirdly enough, this fuzz and grittiness to the soundtrack adds a likely unintentional layer of dread to every song. It makes the atmosphere feel really heavy to me, like there's something much darker going on and I really like that. I don't know, man, it really just kind of hits for me.
flavio gjoni Circle of the Moon, Portrait, and Dawn had good starting themes as well imo. Ecclesia has a great soundtrack but I don't think the starting theme is up to par with any of the others though.
Gorlokk I thought both Prologue and An Empty Tome were great, in particular the second one but maybe not as good as the others. About on par with Portrait.
I'll never understand why people despise this game. Sure, it's a bit too easy, it lacks many "new" gameplay elements, and has a confusing dual-castle gimmick, but the two castles are well-designed, the spritework makes this look like an early DS game, and the music is spectacular, even if the instrumentation is a bit on the retro side. It's easily my favorite of the GBA trilogy.
Abusing the magic system was one of the most fun things to do in this game. People hate it because of the patchy quality it has (graphics look too blocky, music is too chiptune), but Harmony of Dissonance is more about the sum of its parts than having individual notable qualities.
Cannot be happier, he returned. Would love to see him in his Harmony of Dissonance era for the series. To know Lydie and Maxim's fate... well, that hurt.

Through its melancholy, this track embodies the curse of being a Belmont. The family is condemned, so to speak, to live and die fighting evil. They are no different than the whip each of them carry; they are only an instrument of destruction, very much like Dracula, which makes the Belmont clan having no real choice over its own fate.
Leon commited his bloodline to forever fight Dracula across the centuries out of _penance_ for his actions in Lament of Innocence been partly responsible for the Count's creation so it's not in anyway a condemnation of his descendants's happiness anymore than a burden out of responsibility for his mistake in allowing Mathias to become a vampire in his emotional outburst against God and Humanity following his loss of faith. None of the Belmonts have ever "died fighting evil" as each one of them managed to live long and enjoyable lives past their confrontation with Dracula. The Belmonts fight Dracula out of duty and commitment to Leon's values of honor and chivalry which is why they all follow in their ancestor's oat to forever hunt the night until Leon's sins are finally cleansed with Dracula's final defeat (1999 Demon Castle War).
I think that Dissonance is one of the more fancy Castlevanias. The Shakespearean music, the designs of the characters, the art. It just screams "I'm a play!"
Rake Dos It was just really confusing... I couldn't continue past Luminous Caverns B until I defeated the Minotaur in Top Floor B, but that was confusing, and I was stuck for a few years when I never played it.
I played this early in the 2000's where even if it was a bad game, I still played it for hours on end because one, I was a little kid that didn't care that much, and two, there was nothing else to play since my parents were poor. Most of my games like this one were given to me by my cousin.
This game certainly has some "what the fuck do I do now" moments, but honestly that made it very memorable for me, especially doing Hard Mode immediately after.

the composer of this music is, Michiru Yamame, and this music is heavily classical with many part heavily effected by Bach fugue. Michiru Yamame, for me as a composer just after Bach, after her there are Chopin, Bethoven, etc, but first Bach then Michiru Yamame.

The vast majority of HoD was not composed by Yamane, but by Soshiro Hokkai, who also did some AoS tracks. in HoD, Yamane was only responsible for two obscure tracks that play at very specific times (I forget where, boss rushes?), and the Simon Boss Rush remix of Vampire Killer.
the reason why the music sounds Famicom-y is due to low memory most of the memory was used to enemy data, castle layout and enviroment, which took up too much space the rest of sprites was as done in lower quality and the music had to use the short, retro sounding OST
I would actually rank this at the bottom of the 3 GBA titles, personally, but I still had a lot of fun with this title and don’t really have too many bad things to say about it. All three games have perfect “first stage” music though.
Playing this in my mind has gotten me through life or death situations before. It just exudes FEARLESSNESS... And that mode of thought is very crucial when it's crunch time.

Seriously this song is beautiful. It's so sad and grim, it truly feels as if we're in a real cursed castle! Of course I love the more usual approach in the series when it comes to the first area's music, i.e. more epic and catchy I guess, but I love how different this entrance song is. And not only this song, I really enjoy the whole mood of this game. Funny thing, I feel this whole Castlevania entry as if it would have a more Soul Reaver kind of approach, in terms of mood and atmosphere (And I can't tell you enough how much I love Soul Reaver!!!).

I've taken the time to extract the MIDI and play it back with the original soundfonts on PC, which removes some of the fuzz and grittiness (muddiness) that comes with playing it through the GBA. It sounds "cleaner", but the original game sounds much better. There's no doubt that the music was composed for the limitations of the instruments, you can tell by how percussive the tonal "instruments" are, which is very common for soundtracks on the NES and similar consoles. But... I think this music was also composed based on the limitations of the GBA sound hardware itself, which results in the muddiness of everything coming together. When you remove that muddiness, it loses a lot of cohesiveness/mixing of the sounds. Most game soundtracks for the GBA suffer for low-quality sound fonts. As an example, the Sonic Advance series has incredible music, but would sound better with higher quality samples. This 'chiptune' style of music really uses the instruments as best they can given the limitations on the GBA. Additionally, these compositions are musically incredible (ex: take a look at some of these pieces transposed to piano) and honestly no other game that I'm aware of has come close to trying to do what they've done with this soundtrack.
It's like the Sega Genesis, there is a raw grit that when removed, removes what made it unique in the first place. I wish there were more console manufacturers today even though a lot of tech is shared between all the big consoles now, it would still be fun to see which console pushes for the top in which spot. Now SNES on the other hand. I've recently been replaying the DKC trilogy and found the remasters of those soundtracks phenomenal!
HOD needs a remaster honestly. This game is an underated gem. I also wish we had an official remastering of Successor Of Fate.. Also I know I'm being selfish for saying this, but I feel like they should have also included Successor Of Fate somewhere in the Smash Bros music library because we would have been closer to having every single Belmont theme throughout the main timeline games. (I mean even "Nathan Drake's theme" (Awake) was added in).
That's part of it's charm, because it really brings you back to the great games of old to the series. I always like games that add nostalgic values like this.
I find it the most atmospheric Castlevania game. Castlevania games aren't really scary or very creepy, but Harmony of Dissonance is the first Castlevania game that made me felt unease or atleast a little creeped out.
This is one of my favorite first stages in Castlevania, not just the music. The context of Maxim and Juste together at the beginning, followed by that giant armour chase before this song starts just makes this song that much more powerful imo
No reason for them to do that like seriously couldn't they have Lydie be Richter's grandmother who's living in England or something safely away from any danger? Like Powerhouse just decided it fair to make Juste's life miserable for _no reason_ whatsoever.
This is probably my favorite castlevania after curse of darkness, it feels so magical and powerful and music is awesome, juste is a super baddass Belmont simply love the art of this game and how dark it is compared to aria
@@apollojustice5338 I meant starring as in being the main character. You can play as Richter in SotN and PoR, but he's not the canon protagonist. Julius Mode is a bonus setting like Richter Mode in those games, or Maxim in HoD.
I liked this one most of the portable titles, because it was simple but incredibly fun. The other ones where much more complex but also not as tight as this one.
It seems that this game used the GB/GBC sound channels for the music so that the GBA sampled sound channels were available for the sfx. Not many GBA games bothered using the GB/GBC sound channels, so that's kinda neat.
i think aria of sorrow is not that much better than this game. to be fair tho as a kid i had the double cartridge that had both of these on it and i think i opened this game first and was like "wtf is this retro bs, is this game from 1999 or what" but after i finished aria of sorrow i tried it out and liked it just as much.

Successor of Fate is one of the best "you have entered the castle" themes in the entire series, right up there with Theme of Simon and Dracula Castle.

When you remove that muddiness, it loses a lot of cohesiveness/mixing of the sounds.
Most game soundtracks for the GBA suffer for low-quality sound fonts. As an example, the Sonic Advance series has incredible music, but would sound better with higher quality samples. This 'chiptune' style of music really uses the instruments as best they can given the limitations on the GBA. Additionally, these compositions are musically incredible (ex: take a look at some of these pieces transposed to piano) and honestly no other game that I'm aware of has come close to trying to do what they've done with this soundtrack.
It's like the Sega Genesis, there is a raw grit that when removed, removes what made it unique in the first place. I wish there were more console manufacturers today even though a lot of tech is shared between all the big consoles now, it would still be fun to see which console pushes for the top in which spot.
Now SNES on the other hand. I've recently been replaying the DKC trilogy and found the remasters of those soundtracks phenomenal!
All GBA Castlevania games have kickass music. This just emphasizes that FACT! Agreement in thumbs up, btw.

HOD needs a remaster honestly. This game is an underated gem. I also wish we had an official remastering of Successor Of Fate..
Also I know I'm being selfish for saying this, but I feel like they should have also included Successor Of Fate somewhere in the Smash Bros music library because we would have been closer to having every single Belmont theme throughout the main timeline games. (I mean even "Nathan Drake's theme" (Awake) was added in).

That's part of it's charm, because it really brings you back to the great games of old to the series. I always like games that add nostalgic values like this.
I find it the most atmospheric Castlevania game.
Castlevania games aren't really scary or very creepy, but Harmony of Dissonance is the first Castlevania game that made me felt unease or atleast a little creeped out.
this game visuals and soundtrack together make a creepy and unique experience, one of the most memorable soundtracks ever imo
This is one of my favorite first stages in Castlevania, not just the music. The context of Maxim and Juste together at the beginning, followed by that giant armour chase before this song starts just makes this song that much more powerful imo

No reason for them to do that like seriously couldn't they have Lydie be Richter's grandmother who's living in England or something safely away from any danger? Like Powerhouse just decided it fair to make Juste's life miserable for _no reason_ whatsoever.

@@apollojustice5338 I meant starring as in being the main character. You can play as Richter in SotN and PoR, but he's not the canon protagonist. Julius Mode is a bonus setting like Richter Mode in those games, or Maxim in HoD.
I liked this one most of the portable titles, because it was simple but incredibly fun. The other ones where much more complex but also not as tight as this one.

It seems that this game used the GB/GBC sound channels for the music so that the GBA sampled sound channels were available for the sfx. Not many GBA games bothered using the GB/GBC sound channels, so that's kinda neat.
Mother 3 also does this in one of the battle themes, but I can’t remember which one.

i think aria of sorrow is not that much better than this game. to be fair tho as a kid i had the double cartridge that had both of these on it and i think i opened this game first and was like "wtf is this retro bs, is this game from 1999 or what" but after i finished aria of sorrow i tried it out and liked it just as much.
Well it was one of the first Castlevania games I ever played and the first one I actually completed.
