I'm finally caught up! First found your podcast in its early days, but life meant I had to fall behind. Just caught up from Episode 20 in.. under 4 days. What an incredible journey! I really appreciate that you both go into each chapter with an open mind, and really discuss things in detail. I especially love that you understand that a normal person wouldn't read the book this slowly and meticulously analyze each word this deeply, and that it's not actually meant to be read that way, so you don't fault it for that. Also, isn't it interesting how early episodes were multiple chapters in one episode, and later are multi-part? Really indicates Goodkind's habit of not covering enough early on, then jamming a little too much later. You've also mentioned many times how the book feels lightly edited, and would have significantly benefited from an editor that would push back - I absolutely agree! There are so many beautiful nuggets in this book, and they're often overshadowed by weird decisions. I think it's also worth really keeping in mind that this was his **first ever book**. It certainly shows, but some of the bones are /really, really/ good. I love the series as a whole, but agree with both of you on many points where it completely falls flat. I remember enjoying this chapter, but can understand why it feels jarring. Richard's easy dispatching of Constance is meant to show his growth and just how sloppy of a Mord Sith Constance was compared to Denna (ie Denna was powerful, and Richard managed to kill her; killing Constance is just a side activity). The dragon's responses to Richard are meant to showcase how he's clearly confident and "righteous", being the protagonist and all - a sloppiness of Goodkind's writing. Very excited to see your reactions to the final chapters, and Legend of the Seeker - I really enjoyed the casting in the show, and was very bummed they didn't do more.
When Richard kills Constance and Violet it seems like Terry's trying to say that Richard's loyalty (which is a part of the love??) to Kahlan and Denna is like SO high that betrayal to them = okay to kill you. Even if it's just that Violet or Constance are like rude, that's enough, you're dead. It feels so imbalanced to place that above like all the other sins, and place it above Violet being a child in that case. Idk it's weird but I do think this sort of thing is done again where Richard is like you betray people I LOVE?! YOU DIE after I lecture you. LOL
I agree completely, Airyca! I don't think I agree with Goodkind's message but I am taking away the same message you are from the book, that betrayal of a loved one is an unforgivable sin.
Richard can't have too many plans because his magic functions on need but he doesn't know that but conveniently his personality is just like, time to do the crazy thing, it'll be fine
@36:50 That ridiculous evil thing gets worse throughout the series. So many of the antagonists are just two-dimensional "Skeletors," to use the joke you used in an earlier episode.

19:43 I think Richard is supposed to be subjective and fallible. Thinking back to earlier in the book, the lesson from Zedd with the trees shows that individual subjective judgments are theoretically important in Goodkind's belief on the morality of killing. In that way I Richard being unable to forgive Constance for betraying someone Richard loves is reasonable and fits within the context of the larger message.

Oh episode chapter? The Mord’Sith have truly left us. Can you be a classified as a hater when your mansion has Faith of the Fallen hot tub parties? Oh on, I forgot we still had to deal with the double standard that is Constance. If only she used Herbal Essence. I bet Denna would forgive Constance, even with the split ends. That scene had so many possibilities. Constance charging in realizing Richard is only free because Denna’s dead. Richard forced to kill her by hand to get away, but while choking the life from her, sees the same madness in her eyes that he saw in Denna’s. She dies in a frothing rage as he offers her the empathy she doesn’t want. There is power in that stupid chant. One day it will save us all. The Dragon has arrived. This is High Fantasy at its finest. But how luscious are Scarlet’s scales? Is she worthy of our trust? You might be onto something with red sexy women. I think there is some red dress imagery in the next book. Rick is taking off his Mord-Sith training wheels and ready to dive in head first into Monster-f***ing. I stopped breathing for a good thirty seconds there, laughing at the dragon needing Richard’s reassurances. You guys are too funny. Could This Be Accidental? The Terry Goodkind Story. Terry names dragons like he names all his magic. With a Thesaurus. Fire Stick. Cloud Rock. Okay sometimes he doesn’t even use the Thesaurus. Is it humiliating to fly men around because they think you’re a large bird? Dommy Mommy Dragon was my favourite board game as a kid after Hungry Hungry Hippos. Fun Fact, Pubes Are Red was the working title for Temple of the Winds. Thanks for another great episode of the #1 Sword of Truth Podcast as voted on by The Central Council of the Midlands!
