    I've been happy to see some things popping up in the veggie patch (some I even put there and know what they are ;) ) I think I have some carrots that are starting to come up... possibly some garlic and then there are the usual volunteer potatoes all over the place. We just had the first hint of frost the other day though so as to how much of that lasts... we shall see. Plenty of lettuce in the greenhouse though so that should be ok.
    I wonder if you could train your courgettes to grow alternating left and right... ie one grows more out one side, the other grows more out the opposite side (if that makes sense?).

      Haha imagine something you meant to plant; coming up! 😂 Oo interesting idea! I have no idea if courgettes will be manipulated like that 🧡😂

    you can still eat pak choi when it has gone to flower. It doesn't go bitter. same as chard- the leaves get smaller as the plant comes to flower. The little flower sprouts are delicious stir fried. So sweet and tender. Happy gardening 🙂

    Are your onions from sets or seeds? Onions from sets tend to bolt readily as onions are biennial, and sets are in their second year so will easily try to flower (just their natural life cycle) where as from seed will be in their first year and much less likely to bolt before swelling to a bulb.

    • @HouseOfTedYT
      @HouseOfTedYT  8 месяцев назад

      Over winter sets - I didn’t realise they would be more prone to bolting, hey ho we know for next time!! 🧡

    Start pak choi seeds in mid-fall and plant the seedlings in your greenhouse in late fall. They will flourish in the cold temps and will be beautiful and delicious by early spring.

    Over the years to make veggie sowing and growing easier I sowed seeds in very small pots - a maximum of 2 and grew them on in those pots. Many I sowed singly. This took a little time when sowing but meant far less pricking out and far less disturbance to the plant.. I learned not to sow too many. Plants grew much better. There are seed dispensers to help with this. If you can sow carrots very thinly to it avoids too much thinning out which can attract carrot fly. I always harden off vegetables.
    You could make cold frames from pallets.
    I did notice when the veg in the raised beds were being watered that they were only given a light sprinkle - in the heat this would have evaporated very quickly. Better to give them a good soak which means you may not have to do it as often. Have you thought about applying sun screening liquid to the greenhouse glass - or shade netting?
    As far as rust on leeks, onions and garlic make sure you don't plant those veg in the affected beds next year.

      I’ve started getting better at sowing less! We’re still definitely learning though 😂 our water hasn’t been turned on at the allotments yet so we were rationing our water butt water haha!
      Yes I’ll make sure to rotate the garlic next near!👩‍🌾🧡

    Yes but you can still eat them with the little flowers. My shallots are flowering 😢 yes garlic scapes are delicious. The veg are confused it’s too hot for them. Don’t throw out the onions they are edible still and you can of course chop and freeze. Looking great have a super weekend, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

    You may need a different variety of pak choi, I see a youtuber growing some really beautiful ones in Jamaica and other islands of the caribbean and we are hitting the 80F here. Did you have to drill holes in the bottom of the bathtubs . I am thinking of growing in them maybe.

    • @HouseOfTedYT
      @HouseOfTedYT  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hmm more research then!! Yes we just drilled a few holes in the bottom before we filled them in - they’re doing great! 👩‍🌾

    Paint some small strawberry size rocks red and scatter them around your strawberry plants. The birds will come to try them out. They will learn that red things in this bed are not edible. Do this before you actually start getting ripe strawberries.

    You must have hardneck garlic. My softneck garlic doesn't have those scapes. What!? ice in your drinks? I thought you folks made fun of us people with ice in our drinks. Even if there's snow on the ground, I have ice in my drinks. I'm upset that my ice maker in the fridge stopped working because now I have to fill ice trays, yuck. The soil looks very dry, cracked. Mulch would help retain moisture. Lucky me, I get free mulch and compost at the county landfill.

    • @HouseOfTedYT
      @HouseOfTedYT  8 месяцев назад

      I always get confused between the two types! It must be hard neck 😂 haha I love an icy cold beverage 😋 yes I agree the beds at the front of the plot hadn’t been prepped, just ran out of money for compost 😂🧡
