It's interesting cause we normally don't think anything's strange about seeing a lot of dead bodies happens in these murder mystery themed shows, but Mao Mao being so morbid at the end suggests just how badly she's being affected by all the death that seems to be happening around her lately. It's a surprisingly normal human reaction for someone who normally tries her best to be above it all.
Also, it´s a status based society, where one could not just speak up against someone willy-nilly. So underhanded methods where the go-to in general, like the ladies-in-waiting harassing lady Lishu.
Maomao is beginning to stand out even the emperor knows of her so she could possibly be a threat to some ones schemes and if they have high level support Maomao could be done away with.
