Wow, what a trip down memory lane. I bought one of these in 1987 with my first pay packet. Still remember walking into currys in Eastbourne ,pointing at the shelf and telling the assistant, I would like to buy that 😀 😄

I used to own this one. I was a lucky boy and my parents bought this for me as a gift in 1988 when I was 13. It was also available in black but I believe the white version was the more common one and that is the one I had. I think it cost 799 Dutch guilders at the time. I still remember it was a D8958 and found your video by googling 'Philips D8958'. Nice video, brings back good memories.

The radio in that system sounds DAMN GOOD, from TV SPEAKERS!!!
They surely don't make quality products like these anymore...

A really nice and rather large machine, well made by the looks of it, it must have been heavy to lug around what with all those 10 D cells extra in it. Most people may not even know what Short Wave is these days.

Superb FM tuner in that. What a nice bit of kit!

Just found a Dixons ad (Dutch) of 1988 and start to search on this model and came here. Price was dlf 799 dutch guilders, is about €691,09 (source: inflation calculator) in 2020. €799.00 in 2020 is the same as 923.76 dutch guilders in 1988 (converted € 419.18). We are screwed by the Euro :-( Anyway, nice big machine and yes, was curious if this model also suffer with the cheese gear problem (what it actually has, as is mentioned in this video). I own the D8884, also in a bad condition and needs a repair. The CD-player (same system I guess) won't read tracks after track 6 or 7, stops with an error. Any ideas what can cause this problem? Nice video, thanks for uploading.

I just found and subscribed to your channel, looks like some interesting viewing, the Philips here looks like a late 80's model.

Black or grey foam always seems to disintegrate to dust but white or coloured tends to last, although it does go yellow. I wonder what the difference is that makes that happen.
I've used the dark foam inside a PC to mount hard drives to dampen the vibrations and had it turn to dust, so I don't think it's UV light as the case didn't have windowed sides.

I rather have white turns to yellow rather than black and grey becomes disintegrated.

Looks quite modest by today's standards, but it was probably quite a pricey unit in its time. Even very basic portable CD players alone would've set you back upwards of £150 back then. Factor in the cost of the servo-assisted tape deck and and all the other bells and whistles..
Interesting it has the spatial sound system as I believe that was a Philips invention. Most, if not all of their stereo TV's from that era employed the feature, and it was also adopted by other European TV manufacturers. It was really quite effective even on mono!
