    Johnny Mac's finest hour...and no outbursts. So enjoyable to watch him simply play at such a level without histrionics.

    OMG - finally! A video of this match of high enough quality to actually see the brilliance of McEnroe in his finest ever performance. Possibly the greatest display of tennis ever exhibited. When the match was over, Connors said, after Mac had straight setted him with only 2 unforced errors, "the funny thing is, I actually played pretty well."
    Thank you!

      I remember an interview years later where McEnroe said he felt like everything was in slow motion during the match. Seeing shots before they happened. Anticipating everything correctly. It was a complete annihilation . I’ve never seen a finalist of Connors’ caliber get completely torched like he did that day.

    The soon to be 32 year old Connors looked tired just walking out to centre court. The semifinal against Lendl the day before obviously took a lot out of him.

      Connors 8 anni piu` di Lendl , 7 piu` di Mcnroe , 4 piu` di Borg ...

    What a difference a year makes. The following year, McEnroe is unable to defend his title. gets bounced in the quarters by the hard-serving South African Kevin Curren, manages to make the US Open final, but this time Lendl exacts his revenge and beats John in straight sets. From there the decline is steady, Agassi and Sampras would move ahead in the US rankings, and John's brand of tennis doesn't work anymore, the power game is passing him by, power would beat finesse.

    McEnroe raised the bar very high that year punishing any form of passive tennis sadly he never found the desire to challenge the new generation after 1984. Some say power was too much for him others claim that vintage McEnroe would or could have won a lot more grand slams personally I think it would have been an amazing spectacle to his best vs Ivan Andre Boris Stefan Jim and Pistol Pete 😢

      Or maybe he met Tatum O'Neal and things went downhill from there. Two explosive, hot - tempered people, rumours of drug abuse on both sides and three kids in a very short space of time he was never the same after his sabbatical of '86. He was raised on wooden rackets but seemed to make the adjustment with Dunlop Max200G from '83. Using that racket, he had his best year in'84 then...... he met Tatum.

    • @sebbytennis4298
      @sebbytennis4298 Год назад

      @@davidmee7239 Yep of course that didn’t help but John had long suffered from a lack of enjoyment on court way before he met Tatum, to me desire is the primary cause of his downfall

    • @davidmee7239
      @davidmee7239 Год назад

      @@sebbytennis4298 Borg was Mac's primary loss of enjoyment and focus after Borg literally walked way from the game after his US Open '81 defeat. Borg had felt that after the 18 - 16 Wimbledon '80 fourth set tie - break which Mac won, Borg knew from that point he could be beaten.
      But I still believe Tatum, whom he met in '84 at the height of his power, was his downfall. He had already switched from wood to graphite, started working out and I believe would be ready for the new generation of players that were emerging except most of these new power players weren't serve and volley.

    Connors should have upgraded his racquet. It's the same one he's been using for like 10 years. McEnroe was using a far superior racquet. With that being said, McEnroe would have still won for sure even if Connors was using a more modern racquet.
