“I will get back to Paris one day!”
I love how you said that because it sounds you were kicked out of there for trespassing in the Paris Opera House to find Eric’s apartment.
You assume that that didn't happen.
Yeah, "sounds".
The Opera Garnier is my favourite tourist location in Paris. I haven't seen an opera there, sadly.
"Did you know the phantom was deformed? He's kind of sad about it." I laughed so hard I woke up my partner in the other room.

I'm seriously so jealous of your library! The place is to die for!
Kitty Grimm If I wasn’t so cheap (and had enough gothic books and space to warrant it) I’d love a library like hers! A library decorated with skulls and Phantom things everywhere is definitely a design choice I could get behind!
Library is beautiful
Glad you have the children's book editions. Gotta get your kids brought up right.
"Start them early, start them young, get them on the Phantom train." Absolutely. Great collection.
Oh, the light in your eyes when you talk about this! I love seeing that light when people talk about things they love.
"Welcome to my library" is the nicest, friendliest, most wonderful thing another human could ever say to me.
I recently took place on a course and my teacher was part of the original casting for Andrew Lloyd Webbers Phantom (I'm from Scotland and my teacher lived in London at the time) and told us wonderfully egotistical stories of Sarah Brightman, Andreq Lloyd Webber and Michael Crawford. It was great.
Oscar Stoker What did she do for it? That’s so cool!!
@@ozpin707 Sarah Brightman was pissed off with Andrew for giving micheal the good parts in songs, songs got the big notes in the main song or she was with holding the bedroom antics until she got her way
My husband thought I was mad for having like 5 editions of Good Omens. I should show him this video :'D
Thank you, Maven, I no longer feel alone. The Phantom of the Opera was my eighth grade to tenth grade. I was obsessed and I still have many of the books, movies, and art books. I even saw the stage musical Phantom in English and in Japanese by the performance group Takarazuka.
I remember when paperback books were less than $5. I'm an older Millennial, so it may vary for different people.
Oh man, did you see the Takarazuka ver. with Wao Yoka?? I have the playbook, it looked exquisite!
@@amyp4752 Yes. And Hanafusa Mari was Christine. It was great. :)

I'm not even a fan of Phantom of the Opera I'm just a fan of you. I watched this whole video. Your nerdyness is weirdly comforting.
I have never read/watched/listened to anything phantom of the opera (except general pop cultural references) I still watched this whole video. I think its just nice to listen to someone talk with such joy. You also had something to say about each copy so that was interesting.
Omg for years I thought that I'd straight up hallucinated that graphic novel/manga esque version of Phantom with the investigator, thank you Maven!
After you talked about your first two non-fiction books, "Phantoms of the Opera" and "Undergrounds of the Phantom of the Opera", I kept thinking how interesting it would be if you could go more in detail on your thoughts on those two books.
I lost everything in Hurricane Katrina and my breakup. Now I'm slowly trying to build my collection back up. Thanks for the Amazon list
This is indeed an unparalleled delight!
I had rather hoped you’d make this video. And now my wish comes true. You have truly made my night!
In all seriousness, though, this video made me happier than I’d like to admit. I’m a huge Phantom fan and seeing all those books and knickknacks is awesome on so many levels! I can’t wait for Part 2 (and possibly 3)!
*Smashes wall in old franch opera house*
-Bonsoir Eric!
Now I'm suddenly interested in seeing you play saxophone. Maybe as a skit for a review?
Same. I can't shake the image of her in full vampire getup, blasting Baker Street, wearing shades for some reason.
pLanetstarBerry You don't need a reason to wear shades.
Remember when books were four dollars?
Millennials: Not really. Lol!
Yes we do most millennials do Scholastic Book Fairs
I'm pretty sure Elisa is a Millenial as we're around the same age.
I must be post millennial then. I do go to scholastic book fair, but my books were always 10-15 dollars.
How old are you
aspetty I’m 22. I looked it up one and I’m right after the cut off date so I’m not actually sure I’m a millennial.
Is anyone else a veteran of this old youtube channel Phantom Reviews? He was brilliant, check him out, he even had a collab with Maven once. I love that I'm actually keeping up with the film references because of him :)
Edit: Oh my god. I just checked out his channel and he's actually uploaded quite recently (compared to the four years I thought he hadn't uploaded). I've put my notifications on. Oh, that bell should have been made years ago
I used to watch him. He still makes videos? Awesome! He and Maven should crossover again someday!
Jessica Emmas I found him a few years ago but haven’t watched him in ages! He’s literally the only reason I could follow half the references Elisa made! 😅
You remind me of my best friend. She buys multiple copies of books just for the covers.
If you want a very interesting, out there AU of Phantom of the Opera, you should look for the Fantome-Stein webcomic. It runs with the fan theory that the monster from Frankenstein ran away to France and became Erik, the opera ghost. It's a very cute comic that makes Raoul PoC and less 'macho man', makes Christine much more than the swooning ingenue, and Erik is less 'IM GOING TO KILL US ALL' and more 'debilitating social anxiety, I just want FRIENDS'. I absolutely love it and I love the 'Erik is Frankenstein's monster' theory.
We all need a gothic happy place as awesome as this!
WOW. This was an absolute delight to watch. Your collection is stunning!!!! I never had anywhere near that many books or other things (I'm looking forward to your non-book video!), but I also was obsessed with POTO in middle and high school. I grew up listening to the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical with my parents (literally, since infancy; they saw the show in Toronto on a trip they took when I was a baby and played the music all the time). I fell head-over-heels in love with the 2004 movie; later became disillusioned with the movie after I realized all of its flaws when I finally saw the stage show for my 16th birthday (yes, that's what I wanted instead of a party -- a trip to see Phantom live on tour); and eventually remembered why I loved the movie in the first place, in spite of its flaws, when I revisited it as an adult. I've seen more film versions than I've read book versions, and I've seen the stage musical multiple times, but I adore the story in general, so seeing your collection was so interesting. (I have read the original! Well, the de Mattos. But now I want to read the Lowell Bair translation after seeing your video! I didn't know there was more than one. You've inspired me.) So, wow. Thank you for sharing this!!! P.S. I was much more active on the official 2004 movie forum, but I still have wallpapers saved from PhantomPhan.net! I hadn't thought about those sites in a long time... Thank you for sharing this
hearing people talking about their passions is a real treat for me, thank you for making this video!
I neglected to check the runtime of the video before clicking. Then I saw it, and started salivating. Over an hour of discussing various Phantom of the Opera books? Yes, please!
Nighttime sharpens. Heightens each sensation. Darkness wakes and stirs imagination.
18:55 the one on the right was my very first copy of the book. I got it from a thrift store during my middle school days.
it was very damaged though and literally fell apart with time. I think around the end of high school I got the modern Library Classics Edition from my local book store(7:35). I still have both copies
"Maybe I'll play it for you s-no. Why am I offering to do that?" You're slowly being turned, Maven, into... into a... content creator! 😱
I've beeb working on this video for a few weeks. I love it! If you have any other spooOoOooky collections, feel free to share!
A new goal has been recognized.... I'm never gonna financially recover from this 😭😭😭
Those Barnes and Noble leather bound editions are on Buy One Get One Half Off right now, in fact! :D
I'd love to have shelves full of those (and/or similar types) someday. They're beautiful and seem to be pretty durable.
I have a whole bookshelf full of those books. At one point I managed to get FOUR of them for the price of ONE AND A HALF! Most if them are short stories (though I do have Anna Karenina, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Moby Dick) and they have been really helpful when trying to find inspiration for my photography projects. I did a "Masque of the Red Death" photo shoot last year for Halloween thanks to those books.
Yay! I love when I find evidence that I’m not the only weirdo! I have 107 copies of Alice in Wonderland. I’m completely obsessed with collecting. Thank you for this!
So glad that you finally have a print copy of Carmilla, Maven. Thanks for the kind of shout out! It's also nice to know that we both have the same favourite ever Phantom illustration, even if the only Phantom illustrations I know are the ones on Wikimedia Commons. I hope you'll share more of your books related to the other great non-vampire gothic classics with us one day.
Halfway through and we haven't moved on from the original title?
I'm a fan.
You have a problem and we need to talk about it 😜
Fun!!!!
I'd definitely watch a tour of all your Phantom of the Opera nick-nacks.
OOOH finally! I have the Korean adaptation, you are right it is beautiful. I also have the original Easton Press version with the masks all over it. I got it on ebay for 20 bucks actually, pure luck on my part. It's quite lovely, although there's only three illustrations in it.
(not shouting, just with a clear voice)
PURE AND ABSOLUTE JOY!
Merci Madame
More Phantom reviews please! Loved this.
OMGOSH Elisa! And I thought I could not love you MORE, but then I ran across this one, and YUP; I watched it until the end.
I have either been living under a rock OR just never realized just how much POTO stuff is out there. First, YES, I absolutely ADORE the story and Erik since my 7th grade ('82), book report for English class. The moment I finished the story, I was just a mess sobbing for the first time after reading a story. My heart was completely broken for Erik's sake. It was equally thrilling for me too because my birth date is in the text. 😀
I can't thank you enough for all of this. I knew pretty much about all the film versions, the last of which, (2004); I can't even think about because you and I feel the same about the Butler film. As much as I love him (like Dracula 2000! Grrrowl!), he was NOT the right person to fill Erik's shoes for the film, and especially after they'd promised that role to our original Phantom, Michael Crawford, whose voice by then was even MORE "angelic" than when he left the show which he thought would be temporary. 😭😭😭😭😭
Anyway, thank you for all these suggestions and quite a few of them look very intriguing. Thank you, a thousand times; thank you!
I hope you're safe and well out there.
Your Florida Fan,
Aszneth
😀👻
I used to have the bullseye one as a kid xD but I lost it. I have little Christmas ornaments that light up and play. I also have a large porcelain girl in a blue dress that plays a song
The thing I love most about your channel is the way you light up in your videos, you obviously have a real passion for the things you talk about. I’m here primarily because I’m a vampire nerd but I swear I could listen to you talk about just about anything for an hour (or more) and I’d be entertained because your glee is just that infectious ❤️
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long, and this was so in depth that the wait was well worth it! The Bantam edition with the fuller translation and the Lost Chapter just made their way to my Amazon cart so fast. 😂 It was cool to see some editions I have, too. But the fact that The Real Opera Ghost and Other Tales is no longer in print is an absolute crime. I’ll have to hunt down a copy! I’ve been wanting a collected tome of Gaston Leroux’s other writings for years now.
I wish that recent B&N classics edition had been packaged with other Leroux novels or thematically similar stories. I’m sure it came down to “this is in public domain” but it still feels like a missed opportunity.
Great video, I love seeing collections of Phantom memorabilia.
This is amazing how many you have in your collection. Very impressive. I have been a huge fan of The Phantom of the Opera and have been obsessed with all things that deal with it. You have given me some ideas.
I've got that abridged Hildebrandt illustration book. Had it since I was a kid.
So cool, phantom of the opera is my favorite musical, I want to read the original book , a phantom of the opera manga sounds cool, there should be an anime 😊
Omg! So stoked to watch this after work tonight!
Boy, this is like a walk down memory lane, because we have so many of those same copies (Borders, the second Barnes and Noble edition, etc.). My first copy was that Harper Perennial paperback with the permanent sticker on it, which I got in 2004/2005, after seeing the movie musical. It's torn right down the middle now, but it got read to death.
ETA Lol, that Kate McMullan abridged version was my very, very first from the school library. Definitely got me on that sympathetic for Erik train!
Aw man, this was a great nostalgic walk down childhood obsession lane. You have a beautiful collection (and the sculptures behind you as well!) Thanks for sharing your continued passion!
Can’t tell you how many books have been added to my reading list because of you 🥰 love your videos and I’m listening to your book on audio and I love it so far. If you did write a Phantom of the Opera book (you totally should) I would be one of the first to get it
Funny thing happened when I watch phantom of the opera movie for the first time , it’s also a Same day that I watch Interview with the vampire 😂
What a cool collection! Living in a home surrounded by all the things that bring you happiness... You are such an inspiration.
I hope to become just like you one day!!
Didn’t know about Easton Press until this video and now I’m wondering if I can afford a $400 deluxe illustrated edition of 1984...
Thank you for sharing your collection. I was making mental notes of which ones I have and still need to add.
By the heavens and hells, Maven, your sense of style and dramatics would make you the perfect heroine of a gothic monster romance.
@Maven - for your Dracula collection, you should purchase, if you don't have it already, The Un-Dead by Joel H. Emerson. it's the extended cut of Stoker's manuscript with reinstated characters, scenes, and events, taken from Stoker's notes. it's beautiful. i think you'd be one of the most fun people to sit down and have tea with.
**aggressively covets Elisa's library**
Watched the whole thing. I'm not much of a PotO fan, but I liked this museum visit. :D
Holy crap! Your first copy was mine as well! The B&N copy. I bought it when I was 10 and immediately before the 1st time I saw the stage show.
I just got a copy of Dracula by Macmillan from Whitby, I couldn't resist. I am really trying not to collect copies, but also bought a second copy of Phantom of the Opera because it was so lovely. Bad idea to watch this video, I want so many of them! And I definitely need to learn french to a fluency that will let me read this properly. I read it multiple times a year, but I would love to read it properly. That original :O I need a Lowell Bair translation now too. I loved this video.
I too miss Borders! Also, beautiful collection.
ITS HERE
I remember the collaboration you did with Phantom Reviewer back when Blip TV (remember that) was still running!! I'm so happy you made this video!!
My sister (who was my gateway goth who passed down her Gothiness to me) definitely had the Hildebrant edition, they are gorgeous! I didn't even read the story but I stared at the illustrations a lot.
I used to work at Borders. I miss it, too.
Clicked for the title, stayed for the vibe.
Just recently found your channel and absolutely love it! Also saw you are from (or at least living in) my hometown which makes me love your channel even more!
34:50 that's the one I have, and am currently reading! It's my first read-through, I really like it so far and am halfway through. This book is SO much smaller than I was expecting when I bought it online 😂
I remember having two versions of the Signet paperback of Phantom of the Opera. Sadly, my 1997 version, with the pretty art of the Opera house, got ruined. And I gave a friend of the updated version now.
Honestly, I would *love* to listen to you play the saxophone, especially if you did it in full phantom/christine garb
I was writing down all the versions I wanted and then at the very end you said you already made a list lol I loved this!
I'm not even that into phantom, but I love to watch you talk about your collection
As someone who never delved deep in to the Phantom I am impressed by any collection that is totally dedicated to one concept.
This is awesome - full of nostalgic memories, along with many new gems!
Lovely video as always, Maven! If you're ever looking for more Phantom retellings, you should check out Phantom by Laura De Luca.
I have so many of the same books but your phantom collection is way bigger then mine !!!! *fangirling hard *
Finally, a mention of Phantom of the Paradise! One of my all-time favourite movies that never gets love! Is it sad that finding out that ANYBODY else knows of this movie makes me THIS happy? :-/
I can never understand why people would have more than one copy of a book... but when it’s a collection to do with a book of this magnitude I have to admit I’m very impressed.
I own the Greg Hildebrandt illustrated copy of "Phantom." It was the first copy I ever read (they had one at my local library) and I bought a copy for myself when I was in high school. In art class I made an etching of Eric crying behind his mask, and I submitted that etching in my portfolio when I applied to SCAD. "Phantom of the Opera" helped me get into college!
I'm sure someone has said this already, but I love that music box you have on your shelf. It looks exactly like the one from Anastasia painted black.
If you are looking for out of print books, there are better places than ebay - Abe Books for one. Not getting any money from them, just to note. Amazon also sells second hand books too.
BetterWorldBooks also have a lot of used books
Yup, watched the whole thing! I enjoy your collection videos since I used to work in a bookstore, so it's fun seeing all these different editions. A handful of which I have totally seen. When you got to Easton Press for instance, I knew exactly what you were talking about. Believe it or not, for used, we would sometimes offer those editions of classics for around $40 to $50 unless it was something pretty out of print and valuable. Had to still have the certificates of course.
We all don't love Phantom that much. We love watching you that much.
Great collection!! It's my dream to pretty much have a library in my room. I have two full bookshelves and need another one. It's why I've been buying digital books because I literally do not fit in my room. Lol. My mom always jokes that one day in an event of an earthquake we're going to fall on top of the poor neighbors (live in an apartment on the 2nd floor).
1: I played saxophone too! Tenor ~
2: My stepmom played Carlotta in the Yestin/Copit version of Phantom! Her favorite role :)
3: Your collection is amazing!!!
WOW you have an amazing Phantom book collection..... it was so interesting to see all of the editions :)
I spy with my little eye Edward Gorey books! Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your collection!
The only Phantom of the Opera books I get are ones that are about the musical and that have Erik /Christine as a couple. By the way, I LOVE your dressing robe.
1:01:47 nope I’ve never read or watched anything phantom related in my life I just really like your videos
WOW!!!! You know, you could make a little dust cover for your original copy from some pretty scrapbook paper, or print an image you like onto paper and make a dust cover that way. "The First Kiss" cover art version is my copy of the PotO book! They were having a sale and how could I say no? So here's my thing: I've seen operas, ballets, and musicals, and PotO is not an opera. I always felt just a tiny bit sorry for Carlotta who is the only one who sang opera (from the DVD feat. 300). Also, are there other monster versions of this mega collection? I had no idea there were so many versions of Phantom and I would like to know if the other major monster creatures have anything like this.
the two dislikes are De Mattos and Raoul de Changy xD
And the Persian
Gorgeous collection! I too am a Phantom obsessive, but I only own the Bantam Phantom (The Bantam edition of the book, not the Bantam of the Opera kids book...) and the Classic Starts version. I was really happy to see the Classic Starts collection you had, since it was my introduction to Gothic fiction (my Dad bought the Classic Starts version of Dracula for me for my birthday one year along with the original novel, so I could read one and then the other. I bought all the other Gothics shortly after.)
Holy shit, was thinking about the Kindaichi Opera House Murders, but I didn't expect it to be included since it's so adjacent! How exciting haha
Love your video, your collection is Phantastic! And since you don’t have a lot of the phanfics (understandably) can I recommend you two phanfics that are must haves in my humble opinion? Beyond the Masque by Kae D. Jacobs. This one is a sequel but it’s beautifully written and has a very strong Victorian feel that I believe you will enjoy very much. You can find a new edition on Amazon shipped by the author herself and it will come signed. My second recommendation is a 8 book series called Through Phantom Eyes by Theodora Bruns and it’s one of my absolute fave phanfics. I know you love Kay’s Phantom, so you will most probably love this one as well. It also focus on Erik’s obscure past but in a much detailed way and entirely through Erik’s point of view. Books 1 is Erik’s childhood till he’s 10, book 2 tells his life from 10 to 20, book 3 is about his years in Persia, book four is about how he came back to France and was involved in the construction of the Palais Garnier and his home in the cellars, book 5 is all about Christine and mostly a retelling, book 6 is a sequel beginning after he supposedly dies. Books 7 and 8 are yet to be released. What I love about this series is that it’s like you are inside Erik’s head and also that it is very faithful to Leroux (including his deformity) while explaining all that Leroux left unexplained or that it sounds too unreal to be true (I know it isn’t, but well, I’m sure you will get me). Sorry for my English, I’m not a native speaker.
Thank you for the recommendations!
Hey MAVEN!Been away awhile and missed some of your video's.I thought YA only did Vampire reviews ?! Anyways it's good to see YA branching out .I ALLWAYS tell friends about you as I don't know of anyone like YA. You really live in a different world than us poor mortals !Your dresses and costumes are right out of Vincent Price movies and allways look great.Dont ever change and keep up the great work.Oh,and you really should be in Hollywood with your own show like Vampire and Elvira used to have making the big money for your growing family!!!
I don't know if the exact reason that the figurines were changed, but, if I had to guess, it likely has to do with the fable of the frog and the scorpion and how the scorpion, even though the frog has helped him across the river, cannot resist its nature which is to kill that which is prey, implying that Erik himself, although trying to be more than the monster society has made him, must, in turn, stay true to his nature and act monstrous... Probably. This is, of course, contradicted in the end with him actually letting Christine, Raoul, and the Persian go, so, perhaps it is meant to plant the former image but turn that image on its head with a rather different payoff.
I actually own the French version and now I'm really glad I do! Now I just need to get my French up to a level where I can actually read it... Why is French so hard? T^T
