  • how to uncouple rail cars in HO scale
a cheap and easy way to uncouple rail cars on a HO scale model train layout.
no wiring, no push buttons. just cut away a few ties and place the magnet into the center of the track.

Thanks for actually demonstrating the installation and correct use of the uncoupling magnets Sparky. They have been around forever, but I have generally seen them abused more than used. Again, thanks for the contribution to the community knowledge base. Art...

I use code 83. I found that simply gluing them on top of the ties works well too. No need to cut the ties.

Bought an old used bunch off eBay, nice demo. And I'm finally grasping code 100 vs code 83 vs ???. Thanks Sparky. - Alan

    Hi Sparky,
Not just Ho I have some of these also with the uncoupling ramp in the terminal station and they do work very well far better I think than the Hornby ramps for uncoupling the standard coupling we use here so this was interesting to me and quite a few over here use them. Keep well and safe.
    Cheers Robert.

Great video Sparky. We have played around with one of these and will be buying more. All of our locos and trains are converted to Kadee couplers so this should work great.

Good demonstration of the coupler action but if you use code 100 magnets on code 100 track you do not have to cut out the ties. Trip pins need to be adjusted to fit just over the plate on the front of the coupler height gauge and there is a plunger pin on the back of the gauge for setting the magnets at the correct height

I use the code 83 magnets on my code 100 track. You dont have to cut the ties out. They fit pretty good. And if you decide to move them you have a hole in the track to fill

Great demo Sparky. I put one of these too close to turnout so it didn’t work. 🤬. Other two on straighter track work ok.

I am planning o. Giving these a go. Even tho I’ve cut off a lot of my trip pins. I wonder if the 83 could be used on code 100

I've installed the under track magnets. Not as good right before or after a curve. Best on straights. I am going to try those above track versions next. I am betting they work better.

Half the cost if you cut them in half! You have to be a bit more precise in the uncoupling process.
