I've asked players over the course of the last 2 years, and NO ONE actually wants to seriously drill! Bought a Dink Master Pro to use in the house and do these drills 👍
Ditto on the request for a video depiction of the "speedup - counter -reset" portion of the wall drills. Your videos are great coaching for all of us out here trying to improve our games to increase our fun. Thanks!
Hey John- QC guy here. Just started PB after 35 years of tennis. I use the racquetball court at Y and am able to do these wall drills. I can also even practice overheads. Drilling a couple times a week definitely has improved my strokes and execution. Thanks.
Great video for helping come up with a solo practice routine. 6:35 it would have been really helpful to see an example of the speedup > volley > reset.
A 1/2 sheet of plywood, .5" thick with clips mounted to HANG from a fence works like a charm... Draw/tape a line n clip high enough to act as net n have at.. Been doing it for years... Kids LOVE IT!!
Thanks John and this is very similar to what I do 2-3 times per week at my gym in the racquetball courts which offer the added bonus of having a corner where I can practice cross court dinks as well as rapid reaction volleys while standing close to the corner and reacting to the unpredictable bounces. Appreciate the helpful list you provided at the end - you're a good and thoughtful man, John!
The speed up and reset drill is one I do a lot. I found my game improved when I started thinking about not hitting two hard shots in a row - except in obvious situations where a hard shot comes back high and can be easily put away.
John; you are a nice person and your pickleball court is beautiful-inside and out. Don’t give up: You’ll find that special drilling partner one day. You just have to put yourself out there and ask somebody. 🤪
I’m lucky enough to have a pickleball wall in my basement. Thanks for giving me guidance on shots to practice. My wall has had a tremendous impact on my play and enjoyment of this wonderful sport. I’m 68 years old and started playing two years ago. I never imagined having this much fun in my seasoned years 😊
Good stuff. I just started back after a 3 month stint on the IR. I've been doing this off the wall for a few days now. Much better than rec play. Your video describes almost exactly what I do. Except the serving part. I will incorporate that into my routine. I usually just take 3 balls and serve on the court to nobody, go get the balls and serve them back. Then I practice drops and resets by just throwing the ball to myself and hitting the shot. Thanks
Awesome video John. It’s great to see all the key wall drills and the screenshot is really helpful. Good luck on the 2024 tour. Hope to see you in Sacramento.
John! This was gold! Thank you!!! Any chance you can record the routine, so that we can see the full thing? It was really helpful to watch your form doing these drills!
Having a textured cement wall with slightly uneven surface will give solid but not completely predictable returns adding a reaction time element. I also put a net 2 ft from the wall and work on drops after a strong ground stroke.
Thanks John, big fan of your videos. I’m a senior been playing for about a year. Love your clear teaching style. I’m hoping you can help me out. I’m struggling with the volley against the wall. My backhand seems better then forehand. Also I just can’t consistently keep the volley happening without it hitting the ground. Any suggestions I might be able to try to get better at the volley? Thanks
Thanks John, great content here. I'm thinking of using 1x2 ft ceramic tiles to make a 6x8 ft rebound wall in my garage. Any thoughts pro or con on this?
I usually include some footwork step back dinks, and taking the ball out of the air dinks. I kind of replicated it in a video. Wall drilling can build such good fundamentals.
Started pickleball one week ago tomorrow. I'm 74 and a former tennis player. Personal weight is good and I'm still active, walking forty plus miles a week. Decided to learn the shots before playing many games. These drills are excellent for shot execution and I will do them diligently four or five times a week. So, how long before I reach 4.0? Or can a 74 year young ever reach that level? Nobody will work harder than I. I recognize the impossibility of the question but is it possible?
I practice dinking and volleys against a wall made of rocks - super unpredictable as to where the ball will go . Brick or concrete block walls are also good as they are less flat than a plywood or slab concrete.
I built a portable dink wall and am traveling in an RV. It did help my eye hand coordination. I found it did not help me with soft hands. by dinking the ball and standing seven feet back, I was still having to hit it too hard to get it to bounce back to me. better than nothing.
You mentioned the drop serve: Did I hear correctly that the rule will-be/has changed that the drop arm cannot be above the waist line? I saw something about this last week and would appreciate an answer. I do drop serves, but have been dropping way above the waist line as the rules allowed last year.
No free advertisement of the Dink Master covered up in the corner? That’s okay, I knew it was there 😂. It’s what I use for target practice, 30-45 minutes, every day.
John I practice on the wall but w a Pickleball the rebound is usually very short unless I hit hard evoking poor technique (too much arm swing). Should I use a different ball? Or am I doing something wrong?
This is the reason I only use the wall to try and speed up my hands. If you dink as you should, it won't come off the wall properly. So you're stuck practicing a dink that would be too high against an opponent.
Curious on your thoughts on adopting a Drop serve given recent scrutiny on volley serves. Lots of options, without any fault risk, makes me wonder if drop serve will be available in even the PPA in the future. It’s not the best look for TV but neither is the current volley serve I’m seeing at the current Masters event… thoughts?
Thanks so much for this. I can´t seem to talk anyone into drilling and not playing all the time so this is great!
Glad it was helpful!
Same!

Yeah, the wall is a great drill partner. No need to schedule. I just got to show up.😁
The neighborhood loves the tapping sounds 🤔💥💥💥
Thanks! I came from tennis and wished I heard this earlier!!
You have a great gift for explaining techniques!
since youre a tennis player you might find this video helpful!

hahaha thank you!
Your screen shot cheat sheet idea is so brilliant. Thank you so much for these!
awesome! glad you enjoy
John this is good. I do hope that the next one will include all the drills on a visual. I tend to be visual not only auditory.
thanks for the input

Getting my kids into pickleball so this is a perfect training regimen for them. Thanks John!

As usual, right on with this drill session to improve - Thanks John
No problem 👍

Great info and I agree that the screenshot is brilliant!
glad it is helpful! bring it to your local courts
This is exactly what I was looking for! ❤Thank you so much! Looking forward to giving it a try tomorrow!😊
Much better than aimlessly hitting against a wall hoping to improve 👍 Thanks!
Video demo of the speed up/counter/reset, serve/return, serve/drop would be helpful
Such a great set of drills! A really good boost to execution skills!
Glad you think so!
Awesome video John. Thanks for sharing. I plan to start this right away!!
You can do it!

thank you!
Thank you for giving those brilliant ideas. Would like to see how you actually perform those drills, especially for the serve & return, drop.
Thanks for the idea!
John, another great video. do you have a detail on how you built that wall and attached it to the chain link fence?
Dynamite video!
thank you for your support!
Thanks for the lesson and screen shot
you are welcome!!
John! This was gold! Thank you!!!

Not enough demonstrations 😢

Sometimes, do you?

Would be nice to see the S.C.R. In action.
the only thing missing is the transition zone reset. the one where you squat to hit the ball, with both hands on the paddle.
good point!

No rule changes are coming for the drop serve. The volley, however, could see some significant changes which would nerf it.
The provisional rule change just applies to PPA tournaments and has nothing to do with drop servers.

From work 🤔🤣

What kind of wall do you use? he made a point to say concrete would be the best because of the rebound.
This is the reason I only use the wall to try and speed up my hands. If you dink as you should, it won't come off the wall properly. So you're stuck practicing a dink that would be too high against an opponent.
@@HM-gm1kn concrete. I used to practice against the wall when I played tennis.
Interesting. And you use a Franklin ball? I guess that’s just what it is then. I’m going to try hitting off a wall tomorrow and I’ll see for myself.
@@HM-gm1kn yes usually Franklin.

My back died doing these drills
The ball in your video is ‘flying’ off the wall.
thanks
