I'm really annoyed by Galatia because Egypt and Seleucids get Galatian royal guard, but Galatia themselves don't have an equivalent? That seems ridiculous to me. If they just had an oathsworn equivalent that would be amazing.
Galatian royal guard were probably mercenaries hired by a Hellenized faction and trained with Greek weapons and tactics which would explain why they aren't available to the barbarian faction.
Still, it is strange they themselves couldn't hire said mercenaries. Or that some would not be willing to serve their country on a more permanent basis.
My favourite build with Massilia is this: 2 hoplites, 2 thorax swordsmen, 5 thureos spears, 3 gallic hunters, 2 skirmisher cav, 2 massilian cavalry, 2 hippeus lancers and a Light horse. A lot of skirmish power comes in handy. I find it does well, although does require a fair bit of micro
I have an idea for countering sword rush armies and I would like some opinions. The basic idea is to bring a main line of shock cavalry and a second line of spear infantry. The shock cavalry could charge into the enemy's rush (which will obviously not be braced), then the cavalry could clear any skirmishers that might be present and attack the enemy's main line from the rear (very quickly since you could pull through the enemy line while it is on the ground). If I understand TW mechanics correctly, the enemy's charge bonus will not apply to your cavalry if the enemy targets your infantry; hence, your cavalry should be in little danger if you pull through your spear line after the enemy has issued attack orders. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
theres a couple things to be taken in consideration. 1. If your enemy bring heavy infantry (even swords) you'll need catas to get through to get his skirmishers. 2. When you pull a cav unit through another to charge it messes up 3. If the enemy has a good skirmishing power, or infantry with javelins/pila, your cav will be decimated in seconds 4. Although all previous points this is a quite viable tactic that many ppl use, therefore its quite known and countered. On the other hand your plan is quite good.. Specially against barbarian units that dont have much armor cause they will get decimated by a rear charge from a good shock cav. I like playing Macedon a lot, i usually bring 3 cretans (op), a bunch of thorax swords + 1 royal peltast or 2 and thureos spears to support my thessalian cav/ maybe 1 unit of companion. I try to stop enemies cav but leave at least 1 of mine free. Thureos spears throw javs if my cav is not engaged against his, if it is i put them on melee or throw javs on enemies infantry flank and they can also be used as meatshield for charges and specially missiles. 3 Cretans can wreck 10 normal archers, so i usually rout enemies skirmishers and then try to snipe the general.
The only faction in this game I ever do well with is rome. Mostly because its the only faction I have experience with. My primary strategy is winning infantry fights with legionaries or at least holding the unit down for a flank and murdering cav with trillari. The cav I find to be great for flaking and wiping archers but rather poor against more robust cav units. Mostly though its the velites I find very weak as they are most always slaughtered by enemy archers. Not a problem against the AI though. Other than that I gave egypt a shot and they seem cool. The only other faction I considered playing as is sparta but thats a $9 investment I am unsure about.
I dont want to be mean, but honnestly you look like the kind of guy that hopes on your units doing all the work. Only plays with Rome; wins the inf fight (your quality soldiers win the fight, you just give ONE attack order); the triarii kill enemy cav (a 800 spear unit that can pretty much hold up for themselves against anything for a while, yet they are ofensive enough to quickly kill cav, not as cheap as those decent 500 barabaric spears and not as expensive as the
With Rome hastati make great meat shields, then you can just have a huge line of Principies behind them to grind out the remaining enemy infantry. Also the Roman elephants can be useful against sword spam barbarian builds. Rome is a great faction over all. Hastati meat shield for evocati is also extremely effective.
MrPsilva95 I can only do so much to win a battle(mostly cause I'm bad) so I need the units to actually be able to win so if I forget about them I wont be totally screwed. But the cav just can't hold its own in a fight which means a player with better cav will ruin all my flanking dreams :(
HeirofCarthage I find that most any roman infantry will do as a meat shield. That fact alone has allowed my cav to have time enough to wipe archers and come back for a huge flank more than once. Except for the time I took gladiators, they got slaughtered by archers.
doomlord117 Again, I dont want to ofend. But that is exaactly the problem with Rome. Using them dont push people out of their confort zone, doesnt require much creativity or impecable micro. Like you said yourself, you are bad (and there is nothing wrong with that, I'm not perfect at this game what so ever). But aparently you can only win when EVERYTHING goes perfectly fo you, the line holds, your flanks are safe and the cav back charges. Playing Rome doesnt encourage people to do better, players just settle. Id say to use Rome the least you can. If have problems with such a thing as "forgeting about your units" just try watching your own replays and PRACTICE. Because dude, that is really bad, iyou dont require perfect micro but one does not simply forget about his units. i mean, how? Anyway, I also hate Rome, when I face them I teand to always win but the battle is never fun, I have to change up my whole strategy specificaly to counter them. And like I said, they are definitlyt "easier to use". If you dont like your cav try playing with pontus, baktria or parthia, they have decent swords, good skirmsihers and way better cav than Rome. When I was bad at the game baktria was my go to faction. Good skirmishers, good thorax swords, great cav, general safe at a heavy hoplite, and I could use if I wanted pikes or elephants. great faction. I'm kinda biased on this topid because I just hate Rome. Like I said, they are "noob friendly"...
Hey heir loved the vids and its nice to see u poping out the cool battle vids ... Do u think u could do some siege battles or even a navel battle just to change it up all goods if u got to much on I understand no pressure ..... Thanks for the awesome vids ur great
HeirofCarthage there are two mods in the making for rome 2. the first based of the movies and the second based of the books: www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?2057-Total-War-Rise-of-Mordor-(TW-RoM) www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?2042-Total-War-Middle-Earth-(TW-ME) but I'd sell my soul for an official lord of the rings total war.
As far as i know as Heir said its a Medival II mod called "Third Age", which is decent or actually a good mode. For Rome II I think there is 2 developing mods. One who is after the book, and one after the cinematic/movie design. twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?2042-Total-War-Middle-Earth-(TW-ME) is for the book, twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?644821-The-Rome-II-Lord-of-the-Rings-Mod there is for movie I believe. Hope it helps
Michael Rex I was sarcarstic. The only use for them would be to rob the charge of your opponent or to protect your skirmishers from cav for a short time. No one would sanely waste their ammo of these guys.
4cMaiden I was fairly certain you were being sarcastic. I am curious about a tactic to use against sword rush armies. I was thinking it might be effective to bring a line of spearmen and a line of shock cavalry. Place the spearmen in the front and the shock cavalry directly behind. By the nature of a sword rush tactic, the enemy would charge the spearmen. Once they close the distance, charge the shock cavalry through the line of spearmen into the enemy. If I understand TW mechanics correctly, unless the enemy has attack orders on your shock cavalry, their charge bonus will not apply. Since the enemy is charging (hence is not braced), the shock cavalry should level the enemy line and be ready to charge from behind or kill skirmishers. The enemy could then be engaged by the spearmen while the enemy line is recovering from the cavalry charge, and hence their charge would be useless. Would this work well?
I'm really annoyed by Galatia because Egypt and Seleucids get Galatian royal guard, but Galatia themselves don't have an equivalent? That seems ridiculous to me. If they just had an oathsworn equivalent that would be amazing.
Poor Galatia can't afford their own best troops, what the hell.
cimmeria is basically on the steppe, yet athens has better melee and shock cav, some balancing decisions are just strange

tbone martinez Yeah, I think you could view them as the Galatian equivalent of the Varangian Guard.

Lol. Heir of Heir's bedtime. You can here him in the intro.
God, it's UK time and I caught an Heir upload. Definitely a sign I should put off going to bed :)
The pressure of being a youtuber...

Any 2v2 videos? I like those.
Masterful use of the meatshield heir.
The meat shield is key in the current state of Rome 2. It is how you gain the advantage in infantry heavy fights.
Useful employment opportunities for the plebs I suppose. Terrible upward mobility though.
Hey heir loved the vids and its nice to see u poping out the cool battle vids ... Do u think u could do some siege battles or even a navel battle just to change it up all goods if u got to much on I understand no pressure ..... Thanks for the awesome vids ur great
the Heir of termanator strikes back
Dang won day I will face you heir and it will be a battle of the gods 😄

Nice one! wish i had rome 2 only have rome 1 :)
Nice vids can u try a large funds battle anytime thanks
That was a savage beatdown
galatian legionaries never seem to do well for the amount they cost
Do they have like a lord of the rings mod for this game? or are they gonna make a total war lord of the rings? that would be cool
They have such a mod for Medieval II Total War, but not for Rome 2 as of yet.

Doodie calls, indeed.

Gobsmacked29 and still not released yet today =='
Are Pleb/mob available in multiplayer?
Well you can always bring Eastern spearmen. They're almost as usefull!
4cMaiden
You mean useless, correct?
*****
Which do you use as arrow fodder: Mob or Eastern Spearmen?
