I agree, the 2 piece is much harder to clean and that's why I use a 3 piece most of the time. However; the 2 piece is good for cold crashing. You just stuff a cotton swap soaked in some vodka in the top. If you used just a liquid, there is a potential for it to be sucked in during the cold crash.
I didnt think about doing that when using a 2 piece. Thanks for the info on that. Yea 90% of the time I use a 3 piece. Cheers
Nice job with the video ! I'm a 3 piece guy. I get fruit fly's once in a while and they're just small enough to get in. One trick I use to eliminate bugs is to take a coffee filter and a rubber band and wrap the top of the airlock, it works right dandy ! My only video critique would be, I would have mentioned the ease of filling the 3 piece lock using the little filler level line on the body of the airlock. Happy brewing !! Cheers.
Thanks for watching Cheers
I've never used 2 part locks before. Ive only ever used the 3. as for cleaning the 2 part units plastic boned straw bruses will work greatly. I learned this just recently after the kit I bought to try to replace my setup after a wildfire came with it. Cleaning was my biggest fear with it. Also glad to know I'm not the only rockgut user for the locks.
I dont think about using that. Thanks for watching Cheers
This video was much more informative than I expedited.
Thanks. Cheers
Although there a pain to clean, I like the two piece. I like the noise they make. Cheers =)
Ha Ha nice. I didnt think about that. Cheers
I like the three piece. Easy to clean and like you said , in case of a blow off you can add a tube..
I was actually going to ask about the S shaped ones and if they need holes in the top but I guess those ridges on the inside of the cap allows co2 to escape? Saw one person saying you need to drill a hole in the top if it doesn’t have perforations.
Yea the ridges should work. Now Im sure there is not a lot of QA steps in making them so you might want to check yours to make sure CO2 can escape. I could see making a hole if you didn't see perforations. Thanks for the comment Cheers
@Aristides Gonzalez let me know how you get on. I might have a go with just making one pinhole to vent.
I use the two piece.and only today I had foam blowing the top off from the Porter I brewed Friday. I have started putting Star San in rather than water now but a lot of my friends use vodka.
Yea vodka is one a lot of people use. I use Star San b/c Im always cleaning something on brew day so I have a batch of star san going. Cheers
I do food ferments. I like the 3 piece. Easier to clean. It has a larger chamber so if something goes wrong and the juices get into the airlock, it’s less disastrous with the 3 piece airlock.
Started my first home brew. Put sanitiser in the air lock, stuck it on real good. Then I filled the gravity meter from the tap and straight away it pulled the sanitiser straight into it 🤣
yea you want to take the air lock off if you are going to pull some from the tap. The beer should still turn out fine. Cheers
try a pipe cleaner Brad works for me...just bend the tip of the pipe cleaner before inserting into the air lock to prevent scratches or snagging
Thanks for the info I will try that. Cheers
Very informative video. Very simple and put it extremely easy especially for beginners who are just beginning to brew. Thanks so much for such an informative video. It helped me a lot
Np. Let me know if you would like me to do any other videos like this. Cheers

Very helpful, thanks for posting.
Thanks. Cheers
Great informative video. Thanks boss!
Thanks for watching Cheers
This is my second attempt at making wine from home grown grapes. Last year I used the 3 piece but I find it confusing. It says fill line in large letters, and there's a line above the letters and a line below the letters. Which is the fill line? So I'm giving up and using the 2 piece. Just one line.
What about using one of those plastic aquarium one-way air check valves, which has a flapper or stopper that allows air flow to flow in one direction (ie . into a fish tank) and stops water from flowing in the opposite direction (ie. out of a fish tank)... would something like that work in fermentation to allow the gases to escape, but prevent anything from entering?
Im not sure if that would work or not. You could try it but I would stay with a standard airlock Cheers
How are you fermenting that will create a vacuum to suck air back in to the fermenter.
When I started homebrewing I would just put a damp cloth over the fermenter.
Im not sure how it does it. Im almost thinking it has to be a temp change. I have wanted to try that. I might have to try that with a batch and see how it turns out. Cheers
I clean my 2 piece with the brush that came with a pack of silicon straws.
I really liked the video and learned a bit. I am new at the winemaking process. I was thinking (my wife says that's not possible). Today after just a week of fermenting, I had to add sanitizer to my 3 piece. Wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, but, I thought a 2 piece would be easier to add sanitizer to since it doesn't have a center part wanting to float out and release the gasses that have built up (not knowing, maybe that's not an issue). And, if i were concerned with the amount of sanitizer, a 3 piece seams as if it would use less. I hope I didn't sound too much like a novice. Your thoughts?
I think as a 3 piece has a bigger opening its easier to work with. I have not tested this but I also think a 3 piece would hold more so less filling. If you are filling to the line on the 3 piece it shouldn't float out. They will both work. All good sir Cheers
I use both. I just grab whatever is clean and available in my stash of supplies.
Nice cheers
This is very helpful|!
Thanks for watching Cheers
hello there mate.. very good video especially for beginners like me.. Only question I have is; do you actually need to have the red cap on your airlock while fermenting? because I took it off for 5 minutes and put it back on.. Do you think it could have killed my yeast? (airlock has sanitised water in it)
You can keep it off. Its just a good idea to have it on some fruit flys and other small bugs have a harder time getting into the airlock. Thanks for watching. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Wish I saw this videos before purchasing the two piece.
All good. The two piece will still work. Cheers
Nice video
My 3-piece airlock that put water in it like I was supposed to and now there is wine in the airlock. What is that normal or is it something wrong
Yes this can happen. Sounds like you had some active yeast. When this happens I would clean it out and add more. I just hope you didnt use just water. Cheers. Check out this video I think I talk about it a little. ruclips.net/video/NViYWZ4yhJE/видео.html
I think that two piece airlocks are preferred by sellers, not re-usable since impossible to clean!
I think you are right. I know if I was seeing them I would send a two piece just to get more sales later on. Cheers
Throw the glass in your oven @ 400 for an hour or so and everything inside will turn to dust, be careful it to start a fire
@@jeremiahvick2482 The 2 and 3 piece airlocks I've seen are made of plastic. 400 might melt them
2 piece in (primary) if I have the head space, 3 piece if possible blowoff! 2 piece also if lagering! I don't think Iv ever experienced suck back from a airlock but I heard 2 piece could be a problem?!?
I almost always go 3 piece in primary and if I have to age I will go 2 piece. I should have talked about this more in the video. I have had some suck pack with a 3 piece but maybe only 1 or 2 times in 10 years. I do see it more in 2 piece airlocks. I think this is b/c of the way the 2 piece is set up. Cheers
Brad Allison video was great and brought more questions to the table, an air lock I think is simple but vital piece of equipment! I'm currently searching equipment and process of carbonating beer while fermentation is underway? So much information that say don't do it aka causes off flavors but so much history says it does work. Cheers
I think in today's world we want everything done so fast. So if you can carb a beer when its fermenting it will be done faster. Maybe it will work most of the time but in some cases, it might not work. It's kind of like gastric bypass surgery. Yes, you can do it but what are the long-term effects of it? (I did not look up the studies) Most people will be ok long-term but some people might not. I would say if you 100% have to have your beer done ASAP try it. If you can wait dont use it.
I use 3 piece
If i have mold deep down in my 2 piece airlock should i just trash it?
For the cost, I would trash it. Cheers
Thanks. Is the 3 pieces one can support cold crash without liquid aspiration problem ?
Im not sure about cold crashing I have not tried that yet. Cheers
Does the 2 piece airlock have holes in its cap?
Yup around the sides
Dude, thanks for the video. which one would you recommend to use for the Cold Crashing?
Thanks. This is a hard one :). I cold crash in a keg. Then just dump out the first 2 glasses most of the time to get everything out. I do this b/c of the risk of oxidation. 2 ways I have done it in the past was 2 piece airlock or foil. Check out this link for 7 methods. brulosophy.com/2018/05/10/7-methods-for-reducing-cold-side-oxidation-when-brewing-beer/
Hi, I'm interested in getting airlocks for our fermenters. For our current setups, we just plug a tube thru a rubber stopper and let that tube bubble to a receiver with water in it. We sometimes have water from our receiver back-flow to our wort and contaminates it. Do you have such problems with the 1-piece and 3-piece airlocks you demo'd? Thanks!
People usually put diluted sanitizer or vodka in their air locks to prevent contamination. On the other hand, if pressure drops in the fermenter, water is sucked in regardless. They're not check valves, they just stop air from entering the fermenter, while allowing CO2 output.
Which one makes less noise in your opinion? Or any alternatives for minimalizing the bubbling sounds? I'm gonna start fermenting in a shared flat soon and as much as I'd like to hear my own beer being made, I'm not sure about my flatmate.
I think the 3 piece would be best. I think the 2 piece has smaller holes so you hear it more. Also I think with the smaller opening of the 2 piece the air is pushed out faster. You could use the 3 piece and just use the main body and put a 1/4 hose on it and run that into a bucket and it would be less sound. Cheers
if your flatmate is so obsessive and on edge that the near inaudible bubbling sound either of these make sends them over the edge, its time for a new flatmate.
Yep, I had some fruit flies get into the air lock of a couple Meads this past Summer, dead as doornails....
Yea fruit flies love meads. Do you switch out the airlock or just clean it out?
Brad Allison I washed it out really well & put more sanitizer in it. I had been making lots of Tepache (fermented Pineapple, Brown Sugar, pepper flakes and Spring Water), the fruit flies must have come in on the pineapple.
Nice. I have not made a Tepache b/4 but it sounds good. Cheers
Brad Allison it’s pretty simple and ready in several days. I learned it from Better Done Yourself channel
Nice. I will have to look into that. Cheers
I have always used water and have never had problems. I have never heard or seen anyone use anything but water. It's very sketchy to tell people to use anything other.
Could always boil it if one feels it necessary
That's eye-opening to me as I have never seen anyone say use water. In homebrewing, you want to make sure everything is sanitized so I wouldnt think you would ever want to use just water in an Airlock that could get into your beer. I did do some looking and people do use water so I would say if its been working use it. Cheers
What does the inner part do in the 3 piece airlock?
It lets the bubbles out. So when the air is moving up into the airlock it pushes the inner part up then the air goes down along the sides into the water. Cheers
It lets the produced gasses out, like he said, but it also keeps the water from getting IN. (And works with the water to keep oxygen out)
Yup. FYI you should never use water in the airlock. You should us sanitizer or vodka. With changes in pressure, the sanitizer can get sucked back into your beer. It doesnt happen a lot but it can.
@@BeerReview I will remember that if my apple and pear trees start producing enough for me to Homebrew with the fruit. Right now I use my airlocks for making fermented vegetables like sauerkraut, and I use water. If the water does get sucked back in it just becomes part of the salty brine.
Hi Brad,
please, that chamber can also be filled with spirit (96% alc)? yeah and at the two-part chamber it has to be filled on both sides to the max level?
Thanks!
Yes, you can use a spirit. The only reason I wouldn't as it could get into the beer and it "could" up the ABV and smell and taste. Now if you are making a 5 or 10 gallon batch I don't think you would get this. For the 2 piece you should see a max fill line in the outside part. You would just fill to that line. Put the inside piece in and fill to the line. Cheers
@@BeerReview thanks dude!
This is the correct length for your beard .... not the end shot 😊
Three piece airlocks rule!!
I was about to put water in mine before watching this
Nice. Yea you dont want to use water in an airlock. Glad I could help Cheers
In two piece you have" two piece"!! Wow so informative
You should have kept the beard
The beard is on the way :). Cheers
BUUUURRrrp
I like how this guy confuses gnats with fruit flies.
