Thanks to your motivation and my passion to the VW world. Your one of the Best out there Gary. Because of you I'm even thinking of a rear wing. hehe need some place to set my tools and coffee. Great place for stickers as well
Glad you've been doing well EZ! The good old saying pay once cry once is so true, time can be related with money too so where do you want to spend it. Thanks for another great video just got back from a drive in the Volksrod, stretched its legs for the first time this year. 1914 with w120 cam, Spanish made 40 idf's with gene berg linkage still not needing to be touched. It's all old stuff I've had for over 15 years as long as it's maintained it'll last and be dependable
Hi EZGZ , glad you’re back! My 1776 in a type 2 bus runs great on a single 40 DRLA with 30 venturis , 55 idles, 150 mains and 180 air correctors. Being in England in the winter I need the pre heat tubes and warm air into the carb. Thanks for your experience!!
You nailed it. You get what you pay for. I did recently buy a set of the Empi 44 IDF’s, and so far, so good. After some research I found that the only difference between the Empi 40 IDF, and the 44 IDF, was the size of the venture’s. The bodies, are the same. Have a great weekend.
Yep, I think you preached the right sermon! I've had to find out the hard way a few times in life that cheaper isn't always better. And you're right about vw ignition points - as of the last few years, I can't seem to find a condenser that is worth a flip...they will last about a season, maybe two, and that's it. Great video and lesson!
Every EMPI part I’ve bought has never fit properly. Even the older “better” (or so I was told) stuff. I bought an EMPI exhaust at a swap meet years ago. When I got it home I noticed it looked a little.. cheap where the headers all met in behind the collector. I chopped the collector off and holy smokes, the pipes were all mangled at tips. They looked like they had been chewed to size. You get what you pay for :) Glad to hear you’re healing up well EZ
Great video. I'm glad you don't mince words. The older I get the more I am the same. What aggravates me is you give someone advice on their VW and they don't listen and come back to you wanting you to fix exactly what you said would happen. 🤦
EZGZ has a great point on carburetor to engine size. I am very happy with my single 40IDF on a 1968cc. But I would say, if you're thrifty and willing to get it figured out. For my setup, I was able to use a new Amazon returned carburetor. Made the adjustment ezgz talked about in a previous video he has. I purchased the empi intake and all weber parts off the samba. I'm into it less than 250. But it did take some time to get it dialed in.
My hats off to you sir. I'd just as well not have to worry about point gaps and spark timing changing as I putt down the rod. I love and respect your views, comments thoughts and perseverance
Very appropriate vidio for me right now. I bought a 34 pic 3 two years ago, and now the linkages are leaking and sloppy already. The casting metal is just rubbish. I priced the cheaper 32/36 webber at $145NZ and the Spanish webber at $650NZ. Im going for the good stuff this time. Mind you the empi carb was running real sweet in the beginning. Good to see ya Mr E.
well said sir..........and yes the 36 Dells or 36 IDF's rock! I have a pair of 36 IDF's on my 1192cc (1200) D case motor...totally sings along down the road
Dead right about carb sizes. many people go too big and their car becomes a pig to drive (I know from experience). Dells and Webers have removable venturis and it's the venturi size that matters; smaller carbs run smoother, absolutely agree with everything you say here EZ!
Thanks brother from another mother . Glad to have you back sir . I'm 60 and looking for Baja . My buddy Gary / jawbreaker sold his after he rewired it . Haha
I have a good set of those delortro 36s they are the real deal better than the 40 without changing the vents. Some guys are getting the empi carbs to work ok but real Webers are better for sure. some guys say the italians are the only ones but it just depends on you. I think the Spanish ones are fine.
Thanks EZGZ, I'm new to VW beetle and thank you for your Honesty and share your experience. And start to learn quite good with these engine and still have a lot to learn. And agreed with you with the chunk. i got a 1975 beetle 1600 and if i don't mistake it was fuel injection and they convert to Carb the engine code AJ and have no mechanical fuel pump. It's a Dual port with 34 PICT-3 Carburetor(Solex) and they add a electrical fuel pump. At this moment the car running great and love it and i will love to modified with one bigger carb are dual carb and good quality. I'm the type love to take drive and no matter i love Mechanic i just don't want to have the need to do mechanic every time i shutdown the car like you mention. And what you think about a Single carb 40/44mm are I'm better with dual carb. Thank you again
Your video came at the right time trying to make some webers work by dropping down the size of the venturis and was getting temped to get some cheap knock off 40's I will stay in Spain :)
Love watching your videos EZ GZ, keep em coming and I'm looking forward to video you may make in the future about how find out what size engine that some may have.
Awesome video, the truth can hurt. Parts these days are very disappointing, it makes me nervous to drive too far from home without loading up with extra parts and tools because of some failure I've encountered. I have a box of failed newish parts in my shop that steadily grows.
Damn good thing I'm not your neighbor I've been working on my street legal sand rail since 2016 I got it running almost to the point to where it's perfect. After about a year of owning it I finally spent the money on replacing the 2 Chinese clones for webers from Italy after that I couldn't believe the difference the reason I say it's a good thing I'm not your neighbor is you would get so sick of me asking you questions you would eventually punch me in the nose for bothering you every weekend lol. As usual your videos are right on.
you would be asking questions while your in the corner cleaning my old greasy parts and have to repeat your questions cause I can't hear with the radio on. hehehe
I just went through two months of hell after building my new 2110 trying to get clones to work. First it was the hpmx 40s i had on the engine before rebuild. After banging my head against the wall i decided to gamble on $89/ea 44s on ebay. They were filthy before i cleaned them and the vents wouldn't go back in because they were so mis-shaped. They ended up working exactly as bad as the hpmxs. I finally figured out what was wrong just last night, the air bleeds for the idles were too big! So i have to epoxy them closed and redrill them. Your sayin two months of hell just to save a buck? I don't know if I saved much, but the thing I did get is an education in how to make these carbs work. Bolt-ons are nice, but there's some sweat-equity in making something imperfect work good.
If I had advice to anyone thinking about buying empis hpmx kits Id say, buy the cheapest carburetors you can find as singles, buy some jet kits, and then buy a quality linage with the filter housings. I've heard CB makes a great one. Price all that, but compare it to a new complete kit from weber. If you already got jets and parts and pieces like i do now, it makes a little more sense to buy the clones. You still need good linkage though.
Hi EZGZ...really enjoy your videos. Can I get your thoughts on going with dual Weber 34 ICT for a 1970 Bay Window Bus single port 1600 motor with Engle 90 cam.

If you go cheap, then be prepared to put in a little more effort to make it right. I bought some Harbor Freight tools that failed on me. Had a reciprocating saw that had the cast aluminum collar break, but had a 4' section of old rail because it was made of forged steel, then cut a piece of it and fabricate it into a collar that was the same shape (I had to Krazy glue the old collar to get the measurements). It was working fine after that. So if they want that EMPI to perform like a Weber, Dell, or Solex, put a little work into the carb, and it may be like a Web/Dell/Sol.
Tuning my 44 webers tomorrow. Installed the Gene Berg linkage and looking forward getting them set. Carbs with linkage were 1179$ from CB. Worth it!
