    I'm more of a British steam kinda guy, but the raw power and the respect these engines demand when they roar by... Not even Germans can replicate that.

    Love to see a steamer without whitewalls, something about the all-black finish gives it a raw power feel to it, a very manly look.
    Nothing against them, they're nice in good taste, but they're intended for passenger units or museum pieces, not operational freight locos.
    Most of the preserved engines you see would have either not had whitewalls painted on, or they would have been completely invisible under all the grime within a few weeks of mainline operation.

      Joseph Lapidus white walls refer to the tires. ( Yes steam locomotives have tires)

    What a gorgeous train! But, it doesn't compete with the daylight express lol

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut 8 лет назад +3

      There is no Daylight Express... it's just the Daylight or Daylight Limited, if you want to be specific: It could be the; Coast Daylight, Shasta Daylight, San Joaquin Daylight, Sacramento Daylight, or Sunbeam.
      Though you are probably referring to SP X4449, which would just be known as the "The Daylight" or by her official designation "GS-4" meaning "Golden State".
      GS-class locomotives never pulled the Shasta, San Joaquin, Sacramento or Sunbeam, instead all five streamlined classes were used on the coast for the extremely popular and famous Coast Daylight, but they also served other duties especially during the war and near the end of steam(1941-1945, 1953-1958)
      Sorry if I seem a bit rude lol, I'm just a big SP foamer(look at my profile pic), gotta get those facts down!

    When did they give her a new whistle?

    • @briancylkowski3750
      @briancylkowski3750  8 лет назад

      The whistle for only this event was from the 611 being rebuilt in Roanoke VA at this time. The whistle for the 1225 was reinstalled after this event.

      Brian Cylkowski she had both whistles. Up front was 611 whistle her own whistle was on steam dome.

    When did the 1225 receive a "steam boat" whistle?

    • @thomastickle775
      @thomastickle775 10 лет назад +1

      That's on loan from N&W Class J611

      Very cool!

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut 8 лет назад +1

      I believe the guys over at the NS * Revived * Steam Program loaned the 611 whistle to 1225 so they could test it out.
      They wanted to make sure the iconic whistle was still working and retained it's recognizable voice before they made the first trials of the 611 under her own power, if my assumptions are correct.
      It wouldn't have looked too good on them to have all that hype, for the whistle to crack up during the first moments of trials, crushing the dreams of many supporters.

    Makes me think of the oily electric ( ozone ) smell of my Lionel steam locomotive as a kid... That whistle is enchanting.

    • @briancylkowski3750
      @briancylkowski3750  6 лет назад +1

      Are you familiar with the Norfolk and Western 611 streamliner steam engine out of Roanoke VA? Her whistle was installed on this engine for this trip.

    • @JungleYT
      @JungleYT 6 лет назад +1

      @@briancylkowski3750 Really? What happened to the original whistle? And why would they do this knowing it would have to one day be returned to the 611?

    • @briancylkowski3750
      @briancylkowski3750  6 лет назад +1

      The 611 was being refurbished and the its whistle was sent to be tested out. The whistle for the 611 was returned and everything was restored status quo. Thats the story I was told and have not heard anything different yet.

    quick, onto the safety bar! considering the fact that we have lost communication with the engineer, we're standing totally exposed at the front of the locomotive,the train appears to be slowing down uncontrollably, and we are probably approaching a crossing, the biggest foamer destination in the world, I suggest we all hold on TIIIIIGHTLYYYYYY!
    MINUTES LATER: Jiminy cricket, foamers are all over the tracks!
    turn this sled around!
