Excellent. Thank you, and good luck.
I used to go to the pilot's pier in the evening selling the Evening News and knew that tug when it was brand new, in fact I got know a lot of the lads on those tugs in the time I was doing that job. I was a lucky boy, low life bosun's son , I got to school on the HMS Woecester in Greenhithe, a school for officers and gentlemen, ha bloody ha! The boys would make me a bacon sarny and a mug of tea and on the odd accasion I would get a ride up the river to Tilbury and back and get home late from my paper round and my mum would say "been out on the river again son"? She knew I had because of the big grin I had. It was big deal for a 11/12 year old, the power of that tug was immense to me, until I joined bulk carriers! What a great bunch of lads I met on those tug boats. I am glad this tug is still around, I shall visit it next time I am in London.
It was great to see the old girl again, i had pleasure of serving under captain speirs. From 1973 to 1975, then moved to sun 22.
I believe that my father ROY GRANT, was Chief Engineer on this vessel sometime in the mid 60's. My sister and I would occasionally be allowed to accompanying him (Chief's privilege) on some of his trips up and down the Thames. We were only youngsters then so it was all the more impressive to see huge ships towering above us, although we were strictly instructed to avoid the stern area whilst towing was taking place in case the cable snapped.
Nice! Glad you saved this historic little tug.
I remember Sun Tugs very well in the early sixties when on Blue Star and Canadian Pacific.Great video many thanks.
I sailed for Sugar Line/Tate & Lyle and remember the Sun tugs when calling at Silvertown Refinery 1072/78
I worked on the sun 23 with Alexandra towing between the years of 1981/83 great memories although she was regarded as an ageing tug then
Do you have any photos from your time on her?
Very interesting thanks
Many thanks LH.
My memory as a teenager on my parents 27' fibreglass cruiser was the amount of wash made by Sun tugs. Every so often we cruised from the Medway 'round the corner' and up the Thames to the calmer reaches above Teddington. Running the gauntlet up the tidal Thames was really quite scary especially when we spent the night moored up alongside a lighter beside Southwark Bridge.
Remember her at Gravesend !
More info about where she is and is open to public yet
badly need some help with my sock draw.
