I was a teenager in the 80s, and all the coolest guys (metalheads, burnouts, etc) had long hair, and the coolest girls (punk and new wave girls) had short hair. I can only suppose this is why I tend to find long hair to be masculine and short hair to be feminine.

This was really interesting! Short hair in the west being tied to poverty is fascinating considering butch lesbian used to be considered a working class identity. And also idea of same gender attraction being inherently gender non-conforming... lot of concepts here are still painfully relevant LOL.
Gender being a social construct it often includes many aspects of life throughout time that we forget since we live in a time where we are trying to expand the meaning of gender. Like, women didn't vote so voting and political life was gendered, certain trades were gendered, all many other things very strictly gendered. For a woman to do a lot of things that were outside their gender meant trying to pass as a man to be able to do so. There's a lot of stories about women taking male identities in order to inherit land for example, when the parents dont have a male heir and women are legally not able to inherit. It's also interesting to think in many non western cultures your job was more defining of your gender than any other thing, so if you were male but did child rearing you could be considered a wife, or if you were a spiritual person for your people you often were seen as a third or other gender since it's a special role.
I think the 80 and 90s were great for women with shirt hair, it was seen as fashionable. I’m glad roles are being reversed or tossed out all together. I’m trying to grow my hair out I want it to touch my back.
My father loved short hair and women (his funeral was primarily attended by women, so many women, of all races). None of the decades of comments on my pixie short hair bothered me because of my father’s early, consistent celebration of my beauty. He made my mind bulletproof.

In the 60s, my Yugoslavian grandma was abandoned by her husband because they couldn’t get pregnant (obv he was the reason and not her). She then cut her hair off and bought a one-way ticket to Berlin with it. To this day she loves telling this story about her empowerment through selling part of her beauty.
I cut my hair from long to a bob, it looked good on me but everyone around me was upset that I cut off my “Barbie doll hair” 🙄 I tried not to feel anything about it but it was an everyday thing in my workplace, I didn’t look how they wanted me to look and it effected my self esteem for a bit, I liked how I looked so that’s all that matters. I’ve had long hair my entire life and this January I finally decided to shave my head bald. My family told me that I look sick and I can understand where they are coming from since my grandmother had cancer and lost her hair. It was fun and liberating to shave all my hair off but I don’t think I’ll do it again. Also, while bald and going to college I got pregnant so lol the womb did not shut down.
Yeah my dad hated my shaved head for the same reason. I can understand since we have had several cancer deaths in my family, but at least to his credit he never made his dislike super known utill I actually asked him why he didn't like it.

I've noticed men are adopting long hair myself included. I also paint my nails. I've noticed women like my nails and treat me different. I don't get any negative reaction from people. Most men in my town either have shaved head or short hair.

@@ah5721 I tend to wash my hair every three days and let it dry naturally in a heated room. I don't use a brush but softly use my fingers to comb our any knots.. I think that's it really. My hair is halfway down my back. I visit my manicurist once a month.

In the Arabian peninsula all genders worn long hair, and they always worn them in braids. You also can see the difference before or at the start of interacting with Europeans and after that, men (unfortunately) hair was changed from long to short(not by force). School didn’t allow males to have long hair either (by force). For the first time, hair was assigned to a specific gender and now a 100 years later I have to convince my family that came from THAT culture that hair styles were never gendered. Omg it's the same in Chinese culture. For over 2000 years cutting ones hair was considered deliquent and disrespectful to one's parents for both genders. In the Qing dynasty, han chinese men were forced to cit their hair to ahow submission to the Manchu ruling class. It wasn't until Westernization that these gender norms were enforced.
Same with India! Not only our men used to wear their hair long, but also wore bottoms that were long skirts. Even to date whenever people need to re-enact a historical event, they wear that tradional clothing, but God FORBID men nowadays grow their hair or wear skirts! I feel so sad..

It still happens. white women pay for Russian hair , black women pay for Indian or Asian hair. There's a small documentary about it. Its nothing new but it is unfair that the people who sell it make an enormous profit vs what they buy it for.

I cut all my hair off about two years ago and I love it. Mainly the same reasons as you do, my hair is curly, frizzy, and heavy. I still struggle with how society and the other gender perceive me. There's a weird sort of ageism re: women and hair length. My hair is nearly down to my waist, and I and other long-haired women in my general GenX age group often get told some variation of, "You're not 18, cut your hair" -- usually from other women, oddly.

I thought "all men liked long hair" (it really does sound silly now, but that's what I thought up till 10 years ago when I cut it :) ) I had just gotten married + admitted my desire for a pixie cut to my husband -- he said "Go ahead -- all the women in my family have short hair *and* I'm kind of tired of kissing a bush" ;) haha. But defs so much easier to take care of! Then wanted to shave my hair off completely -- just to try it out -- and I did! So cool + fun to try out! I was amazed how breezy my head felt just walking :) -- and I got several compliments on my head shape (who knew? :P ) As a grade-school teacher I intentionally waited till the last day of school + then cut it that evening so it had some time to grow back, but it was still pretty short by the end of the 6wk break (Germany). I therefore made sure to wear earrings + a ribbon around my head for the first week, just to help the kids get used to the new look. Funny story: A 6th grader asked my why I had a ribbon around my head and another 6th grader answered "As a decoration!" I'm Native -Lakota and there is a strong cultural tradition of long hair in our communities for both men and women. It's a long story with hair having been cut during residential school days but I have almost always had short hair. My mother did too My hair is long, thick and fine so it never cooperates. I also have an extreme dislike of my hair getting wet in the shower or pool and then feeling it stick to my upper back. I will always have short hair because it makes me happy and comfortable.
I prefer shoulder-length bob hair. It suits my face shape and it’s easier to manage. Long hair is fun but mine is so thin that there’s not much I can do with it. Am yet to experience fevers or tooth pain lmao
I like the same cut but for opposite reasons. My hair is really thick and a bit curly and it'll start to hurt if I keep it too long. Any shorter and it becomes harder to manage. I'd shave it all off but I'm pretty sure that would literally kill my parents lol

Albeit to a lesser or higher degree depending on where in the world you are. If you have long, beautiful hair, some people get actually mad when you cut it! It’s baffling to see. The shorter you go, the angrier they get. That’s a cool societal trick.
People actually got mad when I cut mine (or really upset). It was really kind of insane. I loved it, but everyone else had so much baggage with it, it actually gave me a complex when I was actually really excited about it. It's really fucked up.

I wore short hair since kindergarten and girls wouldn't even speak to me. Because they saw I looked different. Admittedly I live in a very conservative country, but still... I had a good reason too (not that you need one anyway). I don't what the hell bothered me so much about it, but I hated the sensation of something "heavy" on my head and it touching my shoulders and face. And around 6th grade I let it grow to try to fit in. They acted like I was a different person, saying things like "omg you finaly did it, it was SO ugly before, now you actually look like a girl". After a period of good old self hatred I am now graduating college with my pretty little pixie cut :)
I was 9 the first time I got a bobcut, from long 3b hair and my maternal grandma cried because she thought it'd never curl again lol however, short hair in itself wasn't much on an issue because short hair were already common on my mother's side for some generations. My mother has been rocking pixies since her teenage years thanks to that. I'm currently going the opposite way after 5 years of bobcut, by aiming for "as long as possible" for the sake of Edwardian fashion and fancy Gibson Girl looks.

As a cis man, I have the opposite issue. I started growing my hair out in high school. Now at 38, it is still long enough that I recently got 6 inches cut off and it's still down to my mid-back. When I first moved from the north to the south, I got 18 inches cut off (and donated to Locks of Love), and it was still just past my shoulders. I've been accused of a lot of things as a result (and some other things like chosen profession and being single for almost 20 years). I even had someone once threaten to beat me with, and I quote "my own faggy hair." I laughed, since I also have a black belt, and they were half my size and half drunk at the time.
Im now 18 and started growing my hair. People make critics because my haistyles are "femenine", like I use scrunchies claw clips and my hair is a one lenght curly shoulder lenght but you inspire me.

This was so well research and interesting!! I'm Finnish and I can tell slightly more about Ellen Thesleff, since there seems to be more info available about her in Finnish. She was probably in love with an artist named Edward Craig, but they never had a sexual/romantic relationship. There's no record of her being interested in women, but personally I'm still convinced she was queer :D She also dressed in men's clothes in her twenties.
She was also born into a liberal family and received a lot of encouragement and acceptance from her father both in art and general lifestyle, and later found similar people in Italy's artist circles. Her mother was worried about her reputation thou. I find her a very interesting character, her art isn't so much in my taste but she had such an interesting life.

My father did not speak to me for over a week, my granny said "you look like coming right out of a concentration camp". my mother, who sported pixiecut in her 20s, just cried. Long hair on women is really heavily fetishized by conservative men and I had long brown hair to my butt for years. So I dyed mine half pink because conservative men claim to hate unnatural hair colours, well they lied. So I cut it to my shoulders and kept it pink, they still won't leave me alone. I'd get a buzz cut if I didn't like having somewhat long hair so much but I doubt even that would help me so why bother? I have short hair,and have my whole life. People have miss gendered me, and assumed I was a lesbian, just because of my short hair. It sucks, but my hair is super fine and looks stringy long. It looks better short. Has nothing to do with my gender or sexual orientation.
100% agree, cutting your hair short can be so liberating. i cut my hair in a buzz cut at the beginning of this year and at first i thought i might regret it and be stuck with short hair for so long but i really loved it and i think i will stick with short hair (shoulder length at most) for the rest of my life
I have short hair. As a kid I had long hair that I regularly cut to a buzz cut for fun. At twelve I got sick and had about seven surgeries in about two years and took heavy medication for almost ten years and my hair suffered beyond belief. Needless to say, I can't grow long hair anymore.
If you are trying to grow your hair there are many ways to do it from your diet to what you put of your scalp. Madam CJ Walker the first female Millionare said something like "your scalp is like soil , you need to feed it. " feed your body well and your scalp and it'll grow.
Toward the end of my grandma's life, she shared many previously unshared tidbits about her. Born in 1915, she passed in 2012 at age 97. I was a natural athlete, as was my dad. As it turned out, so was my grandma. She RAN TRACK in school!!! She wore short hair and was, as you said, told that running and short would render her infertile. Grandma went on to have 4 children and to hide much of these less traditional traits. She saw my excitement for what she shared, divulging more about her earlier years. She had a wonderful, loving marriage to my dad's dad. He died of leukemia 10 days after developing a bloody nose that wouldn't stop and subsequent diagnosis. My grandpa died in 1965, when my dad was 25, which was before his marriage to my mum in 1972. Her obit shares a lot about her life, but it didn't make mention of her marriage, AND DIVORCE, of a man who abused her. I was terribly concerned of being rejected by my Christian grandparents when I decided I had to divorce my abusive, pastor ex-husband. She wept and told me of her marriage and divorce. L married her in 1970. He, too, didn't believe it was a problem to divorce an abusive (partner) or, evidently, to go on to remarry. Y'know, it's only upon writing this that her and my dad's remarriages REALLY hit me. I have stayed single for the past 13.5 years. Time to take a page out of her book and move on with life AND LOVE. Had she been born later, I believe she may have gone on to champion for LGBT rights. When I came out (still figuring things out), she said she couldn't quite understand, but many in her time couldn't understand her. Live and learn, she said, except, apparently, where technology was concerned. That new fangled technology was impractical and out of her reach. 😂 So, this grandma was one of the short haired girls, by choice; the other was a short haired girl due to complications after Scarlet fever. I was someone that had cut my hair off shortly after I graduated high school for gender reasons. I'm AFAB but identify as agender and wanted to appear as genderless as possible. However, a few years ago, I wanted to do an hombre dye of my hair so I needed it longer. I'm a naturally curly girl and hated my textured hair all my life. But, last year, I fell in love with my curls and haven't touched it since. It's weird to have such a loving relationship with my hair after I hated it all my life. Plus, I realised I don't owe anybody androgyny unless _I_ want to display that way. Cutting my hair helped me accept myself, but growing it back out also helped me accept myself in different ways. It's funny just how connected to identity can be and often is for people.
I never in a million years imagined that I'd ever choose to have short hair, not just short but mega close crop. I was SOOOO attached to my 'crowning glory', I had lots of curls and folks often would refer to me as 'the one with all the hair' if pointing me out in a crowd. I used to feel like I needed big hair in order to balance out my body which wasn't petite and delicate. When I turned 40 (5 years ago) I decided to stop dyeing my hair and at the same time went to get a super short haircut to cut out most of it. The first cut they gave me was awful, I looked like a country vicar, then I found a good hairdresser who gave me a nice pixie cut. I now cut it myself (using clippers) and i LOVE it. It's SOOOO useful having short hair, I don't have to worry about it getting in my eyes, I don't have to tie it up and i don't need to get my roots done anymore! What was really interesting from doing this though, was the unexpected side-effect of feeling more 'me' than I'd felt before. I'm not sure why, but I think I 'hid' under my hair a bit, or was too attached to it as a part of me. Now I can't imagine having it long again, mainly because of the maintenance! I'm not petite or elfin at all and the idea that this haircut was only going to suit small pixie like women was blown out of the water when I finally went for it. Heck, if you hate it, you can just wear headscarves or a wig for a while till it grows through. I had a bob for a while but I actually prefer the pixie to the bob (on me). Also the big bonus is being able to wear HUGE statement earrings which always got hidden by all my hair before! I don't think there is any reason that you would look like a guy with short hair, unless you're dressing in super masculine clothes etc - even then, does it matter? I don't think short hair is inherently masculine, it's just our culture thinks it is. It's just practical hair. I can tell you I have not looked back and wouldn't want to have to fret over 'bad hair days' etc again with my long hair! You might find like i did, if you do chop it all off that you love it so much you don't grow it out. Just be sure to find someone who knows how to cut short hair, not the woman who did my first short cut (who had previously been cutting my shoulder length hair). She had no clue and once she'd started i realised this but it was too late. ended up going to a different hairdresser to fix it and ended up with my pixie cut (now just cut it myself!). (I realise enow i've just repeated a lot of what I said in the first post, sorry!)
I remember when straighter hair got super popular in the 2000’s I was told several times as a little girl that my hair would “look better if it was straight” I’m so happy I never used heat tools on my hair, it’s a lovely dark blonde and mildly wavy. I can’t imagine how those trends affected women with 4c hair or just a corse texture in general. I still remember walking through the school hallway and it was the first day in years I had worn my hair down (I always held it up in a pony because I thought I didn’t look good with it down) some girl was walking with me, she turned looked at my hair and said “have you thought of straightening your hair” I said something along the lines of “yeah I might try it” and it then took me another 8-10 years to wear my hair down.
Somehow it almost feels nice to know that I could conceptualize myself as and be seen as a form of non-binary in the Victorian era, even if it would be stigmatized and criminalized. I would be pretty pissed that my uterus never ended up shutting down.
I would amend the title to "The VERY Complicated History of Women with Short Hair in Europe and the United States" since that is what the video focuses on. You did touch on the fact that this video wasn't cohesive of every country, but this would clarify it a bit better, since folks in the US and Europe are treated at the default a lot. I have very long hair (to the waist), they are bread most of the time, but when I were them loose I can sense people staring. I understand why it was considerated something private. and also it is so annoying when they are loose, if I bend to catch something on the ground they go in my face all the way to the ground!! Also, for me long hair is one of my few vanities. Most women like to make themselves look pretty, and long hair is for me less maintenance than nails or makeup.
As a young, queer woman in the early 1990’s, I sold my own very long, auburn hair to a theatrical wig maker. I had hardly any money and had newly left home, moving to a new city. I had definitely seen Les Mis on stage not long before, and it was a totally melodramatic gesture, and didn’t make very much money, but it certainly paid for groceries. Plus it made a good story for a goth girl!
I think this video makes a lot of sense to me now. I never understood why my parents saw me expressing the desire to cut my hair when I was younger as masculine. To me, it was just a change in style and, as I have very thick, heavy hair which can really get hot in the summertime, a relief. In fact, when I finally cut it, they asked if I was transgender. I think, to them, A woman’s worth is so inextricably tied in her outward appearance that having short hair confuses them.

This is excellent! I've had short hair since 2009 and I'm interested in history and historical fashions. I've often had the thought "if I want to do any reenacting I'll probably just end up reenacting as a dude" because I'm not willing to change my hair (I'm also not that tempted by all the undergarments, given that I can't even tolerate wearing underwire bras, so reenacting as a dude still seems more tempting.) But of course people would have had short hair at various points. The short hair is great for me and I never want to go back. I'm of the mindset that everyone of every presentation should try short hair and long hair at least once in their life to figure out what they like, because at the end of the day it's not a permanent decision (obviously it should be one's own choice, not like, a haircut or sumptuary law forced on them.)

thank you, this was very educational! :) when I cut my hair (I have very curly hair - and loads of it) my Swiss granddad loved it saying it reminded him of the women of his youth. That surprised me since he grew up in a working class family close to the city. While my Italian granddad was horryfied saying I looked like a poor farmer's daughter now... him being a farmer himself and all that.
i always loved my long hair, i had it down to my waist and took extensive care of it. i got alopecia when i was 20, which ended in me being completely bald except for a few strands which i had to shave off. it's luckily growing back now (after 2 years), but i've never had short hair in my life, so this video is actually helping me cope with that and help me accept my short hair in a new, comforting way. thank you kaz!

i like short hair because it's cheaper and easier to maintain and i don't like the association between long hair and traditional gender roles. i had waist length hair and the guys that were interested in me had weird ass thoughts about long hair, beauty and femininity. my dad didn't talk to me for a week because i cut my hair short, says a lot about how people perceive women with different hair lengths.
Some girls/women just do not want to be bothered with their hair. I remember being 9 years old and so happy because my mom allowed me to cut it short. Curlers are annoying. I hated picture day at school. She would put my hair up the night before and I couldn't sleep with things.

I was a teenager in the 80s, and all the coolest guys (metalheads, burnouts, etc) had long hair, and the coolest girls (punk and new wave girls) had short hair. I can only suppose this is why I tend to find long hair to be masculine and short hair to be feminine.

This was really interesting! Short hair in the west being tied to poverty is fascinating considering butch lesbian used to be considered a working class identity. And also idea of same gender attraction being inherently gender non-conforming... lot of concepts here are still painfully relevant LOL.
Butches often struggled to find employment in the early 20th century with is a factor also
Gender being a social construct it often includes many aspects of life throughout time that we forget since we live in a time where we are trying to expand the meaning of gender. Like, women didn't vote so voting and political life was gendered, certain trades were gendered, all many other things very strictly gendered. For a woman to do a lot of things that were outside their gender meant trying to pass as a man to be able to do so. There's a lot of stories about women taking male identities in order to inherit land for example, when the parents dont have a male heir and women are legally not able to inherit. It's also interesting to think in many non western cultures your job was more defining of your gender than any other thing, so if you were male but did child rearing you could be considered a wife, or if you were a spiritual person for your people you often were seen as a third or other gender since it's a special role.
I think the 80 and 90s were great for women with shirt hair, it was seen as fashionable. I’m glad roles are being reversed or tossed out all together. I’m trying to grow my hair out I want it to touch my back.

My father loved short hair and women (his funeral was primarily attended by women, so many women, of all races). None of the decades of comments on my pixie short hair bothered me because of my father’s early, consistent celebration of my beauty. He made my mind bulletproof.

Everybody thinks I'm lesbian because of my short hair. The hairdresser even refuse to shave my neck because it's less "feminine". In the 60s, my Yugoslavian grandma was abandoned by her husband because they couldn’t get pregnant (obv he was the reason and not her). She then cut her hair off and bought a one-way ticket to Berlin with it. To this day she loves telling this story about her empowerment through selling part of her beauty.
I cut my hair from long to a bob, it looked good on me but everyone around me was upset that I cut off my “Barbie doll hair” 🙄 I tried not to feel anything about it but it was an everyday thing in my workplace, I didn’t look how they wanted me to look and it effected my self esteem for a bit, I liked how I looked so that’s all that matters. I’ve had long hair my entire life and this January I finally decided to shave my head bald. My family told me that I look sick and I can understand where they are coming from since my grandmother had cancer and lost her hair. It was fun and liberating to shave all my hair off but I don’t think I’ll do it again. Also, while bald and going to college I got pregnant so lol the womb did not shut down.
Yeah my dad hated my shaved head for the same reason. I can understand since we have had several cancer deaths in my family, but at least to his credit he never made his dislike super known utill I actually asked him why he didn't like it.

Lots of noble women were imprisioned during that time due to their political afiliation, and their hair was cut, either to humiliate them, or because lice and other pests. Women outside started to cut their hair to show support to those imprissioned, or at least, that is the story I read

In the Arabian peninsula all genders worn long hair, and they always worn them in braids. You also can see the difference before or at the start of interacting with Europeans and after that, men (unfortunately) hair was changed from long to short(not by force). School didn’t allow males to have long hair either (by force).

Omg it's the same in Chinese culture. For over 2000 years cutting ones hair was considered deliquent and disrespectful to one's parents for both genders. In the Qing dynasty, han chinese men were forced to cit their hair to ahow submission to the Manchu ruling class. It wasn't until Westernization that these gender norms were enforced.
Same with India! Not only our men used to wear their hair long, but also wore bottoms that were long skirts. Even to date whenever people need to re-enact a historical event, they wear that tradional clothing, but God FORBID men nowadays grow their hair or wear skirts! I feel so sad..

It still happens. white women pay for Russian hair , black women pay for Indian or Asian hair. There's a small documentary about it. Its nothing new but it is unfair that the people who sell it make an enormous profit vs what they buy it for.
What bothered me was the dude who couldn't wrap his head around all the young women selling their hair. He thought that "female vanity" would keep them from selling it, never once considering that *starvation* might eclipse our desire to be attractive to men. What an absolute DONUT.

I cut all my hair off about two years ago and I love it. Mainly the same reasons as you do, my hair is curly, frizzy, and heavy. I still struggle with how society and the other gender perceive me. Probably from years of “Women are suppose to have long hair and are only attractive with long hair” being beaten into my brain. Great video!
There's a weird sort of ageism re: women and hair length. My hair is nearly down to my waist, and I and other long-haired women in my general GenX age group often get told some variation of, "You're not 18, cut your hair" -- usually from other women, oddly.

When I was a kid in the 90s women were told to cut their hair shorter because long hair aged them 🤷♀️. You do you and have what ever makes you happy. I was also about to comment on the ageism of short hair. Usually women in my country would start cutting their hair short from their 40's and on, with the same excuse that "long hair makes them look old". But if a girl wants a short cut, she gets questioned. Isn't it self-contradictory?

I thought "all men liked long hair" (it really does sound silly now, but that's what I thought up till 10 years ago when I cut it :) ) I had just gotten married + admitted my desire for a pixie cut to my husband -- he said "Go ahead -- all the women in my family have short hair *and* I'm kind of tired of kissing a bush" ;) haha. But defs so much easier to take care of!
Then wanted to shave my hair off completely -- just to try it out -- and I did! So cool + fun to try out! I was amazed how breezy my head felt just walking :) -- and I got several compliments on my head shape (who knew? :P )
As a grade-school teacher I intentionally waited till the last day of school + then cut it that evening so it had some time to grow back, but it was still pretty short by the end of the 6wk break (Germany). I therefore made sure to wear earrings + a ribbon around my head for the first week, just to help the kids get used to the new look. Funny story: A 6th grader asked my why I had a ribbon around my head and another 6th grader answered "As a decoration!" I responded "Well, that makes me sound like a Christmas tree, but essentially, yes :)"

I'm Native -Lakota and there is a strong cultural tradition of long hair in our communities for both men and women. It's a long story with hair having been cut during residential school days but I have almost always had short hair. My mother did too My hair is long, thick and fine so it never cooperates. I also have an extreme dislike of my hair getting wet in the shower or pool and then feeling it stick to my upper back. I will always have short hair because it makes me happy and comfortable.

I like the same cut but for opposite reasons. My hair is really thick and a bit curly and it'll start to hurt if I keep it too long. Any shorter and it becomes harder to manage. I'd shave it all off but I'm pretty sure that would literally kill my parents lol

People actually got mad when I cut mine (or really upset). It was really kind of insane. I loved it, but everyone else had so much baggage with it, it actually gave me a complex when I was actually really excited about it. It's really fucked up.

I wore short hair since kindergarten and girls wouldn't even speak to me. Because they saw I looked different. Admittedly I live in a very conservative country, but still... I had a good reason too (not that you need one anyway). I don't what the hell bothered me so much about it, but I hated the sensation of something "heavy" on my head and it touching my shoulders and face. And around 6th grade I let it grow to try to fit in. They acted like I was a different person, saying things like "omg you finaly did it, it was SO ugly before, now you actually look like a girl". After a period of good old self hatred I am now graduating college with my pretty little pixie cut :)
I was 9 the first time I got a bobcut, from long 3b hair and my maternal grandma cried because she thought it'd never curl again lol however, short hair in itself wasn't much on an issue because short hair were already common on my mother's side for some generations. My mother has been rocking pixies since her teenage years thanks to that. I'm currently going the opposite way after 5 years of bobcut, by aiming for "as long as possible" for the sake of Edwardian fashion and fancy Gibson Girl looks.

As a cis man, I have the opposite issue. I started growing my hair out in high school. Now at 38, it is still long enough that I recently got 6 inches cut off and it's still down to my mid-back. When I first moved from the north to the south, I got 18 inches cut off (and donated to Locks of Love), and it was still just past my shoulders. I've been accused of a lot of things as a result (and some other things like chosen profession and being single for almost 20 years). I even had someone once threaten to beat me with, and I quote "my own faggy hair." I laughed, since I also have a black belt, and they were half my size and half drunk at the time.
Im now 18 and started growing my hair. People make critics because my haistyles are "femenine", like I use scrunchies claw clips and my hair is a one lenght curly shoulder lenght but you inspire me.

This was so well research and interesting!! I'm Finnish and I can tell slightly more about Ellen Thesleff, since there seems to be more info available about her in Finnish. She was probably in love with an artist named Edward Craig, but they never had a sexual/romantic relationship. There's no record of her being interested in women, but personally I'm still convinced she was queer :D She also dressed in men's clothes in her twenties.

Long hair on women is really heavily fetishized by conservative men and I had long brown hair to my butt for years. So I dyed mine half pink because conservative men claim to hate unnatural hair colours, well they lied. So I cut it to my shoulders and kept it pink, they still won't leave me alone. I'd get a buzz cut if I didn't like having somewhat long hair so much but I doubt even that would help me so why bother? I have short hair,and have my whole life. People have miss gendered me, and assumed I was a lesbian, just because of my short hair. It sucks, but my hair is super fine and looks stringy long. It looks better short. Has nothing to do with my gender or sexual orientation.

I have short hair. As a kid I had long hair that I regularly cut to a buzz cut for fun. At twelve I got sick and had about seven surgeries in about two years and took heavy medication for almost ten years and my hair suffered beyond belief. Needless to say, I can't grow long hair anymore.

Toward the end of my grandma's life, she shared many previously unshared tidbits about her. Born in 1915, she passed in 2012 at age 97. I was a natural athlete, as was my dad. As it turned out, so was my grandma. She RAN TRACK in school!!! She wore short hair and was, as you said, told that running and short would render her infertile. Grandma went on to have 4 children and to hide much of these less traditional traits. She saw my excitement for what she shared, divulging more about her earlier years.
She had a wonderful, loving marriage to my dad's dad. He died of leukemia 10 days after developing a bloody nose that wouldn't stop and subsequent diagnosis. My grandpa died in 1965, when my dad was 25, which was before his marriage to my mum in 1972. Her obit shares a lot about her life, but it didn't make mention of her marriage, AND DIVORCE, of a man who abused her. I was terribly concerned of being rejected by my Christian grandparents when I decided I had to divorce my abusive, pastor ex-husband. She wept and told me of her marriage and divorce. L married her in 1970. He, too, didn't believe it was a problem to divorce an abusive (partner) or, evidently, to go on to remarry. Y'know, it's only upon writing this that her and my dad's remarriages REALLY hit me. I have stayed single for the past 13.5 years. Time to take a page out of her book and move on with life AND LOVE. Had she been born later, I believe she may have gone on to champion for LGBT rights. When I came out (still figuring things out), she said she couldn't quite understand, but many in her time couldn't understand her. Live and learn, she said, except, apparently, where technology was concerned. That new fangled technology was impractical and out of her reach. 😂 So, this grandma was one of the short haired girls, by choice; the other was a short haired girl due to complications after Scarlet fever.

I was someone that had cut my hair off shortly after I graduated high school for gender reasons. I'm AFAB but identify as agender and wanted to appear as genderless as possible. However, a few years ago, I wanted to do an hombre dye of my hair so I needed it longer.
I'm a naturally curly girl and hated my textured hair all my life. But, last year, I fell in love with my curls and haven't touched it since. It's weird to have such a loving relationship with my hair after I hated it all my life. Plus, I realised I don't owe anybody androgyny unless _I_ want to display that way.
Cutting my hair helped me accept myself, but growing it back out also helped me accept myself in different ways. It's funny just how connected to identity can be and often is for people.

I never in a million years imagined that I'd ever choose to have short hair, not just short but mega close crop. I was SOOOO attached to my 'crowning glory', I had lots of curls and folks often would refer to me as 'the one with all the hair' if pointing me out in a crowd. I used to feel like I needed big hair in order to balance out my body which wasn't petite and delicate. When I turned 40 (5 years ago) I decided to stop dyeing my hair and at the same time went to get a super short haircut to cut out most of it. The first cut they gave me was awful, I looked like a country vicar, then I found a good hairdresser who gave me a nice pixie cut. I now cut it myself (using clippers) and i LOVE it. It's SOOOO useful having short hair, I don't have to worry about it getting in my eyes, I don't have to tie it up and i don't need to get my roots done anymore! What was really interesting from doing this though, was the unexpected side-effect of feeling more 'me' than I'd felt before. I'm not sure why, but I think I 'hid' under my hair a bit, or was too attached to it as a part of me. Now I can't imagine having it long again, mainly because of the maintenance!

I'm not petite or elfin at all and the idea that this haircut was only going to suit small pixie like women was blown out of the water when I finally went for it. Heck, if you hate it, you can just wear headscarves or a wig for a while till it grows through. I had a bob for a while but I actually prefer the pixie to the bob (on me). Also the big bonus is being able to wear HUGE statement earrings which always got hidden by all my hair before!
I don't think there is any reason that you would look like a guy with short hair, unless you're dressing in super masculine clothes etc - even then, does it matter? I don't think short hair is inherently masculine, it's just our culture thinks it is. It's just practical hair. I can tell you I have not looked back and wouldn't want to have to fret over 'bad hair days' etc again with my long hair! You might find like i did, if you do chop it all off that you love it so much you don't grow it out. Just be sure to find someone who knows how to cut short hair, not the woman who did my first short cut (who had previously been cutting my shoulder length hair). She had no clue and once she'd started i realised this but it was too late. ended up going to a different hairdresser to fix it and ended up with my pixie cut (now just cut it myself!). (I realise enow i've just repeated a lot of what I said in the first post, sorry!)

I remember when straighter hair got super popular in the 2000’s I was told several times as a little girl that my hair would “look better if it was straight” I’m so happy I never used heat tools on my hair, it’s a lovely dark blonde and mildly wavy. I can’t imagine how those trends affected women with 4c hair or just a corse texture in general. I still remember walking through the school hallway and it was the first day in years I had worn my hair down (I always held it up in a pony because I thought I didn’t look good with it down) some girl was walking with me, she turned looked at my hair and said “have you thought of straightening your hair” I said something along the lines of “yeah I might try it” and it then took me another 8-10 years to wear my hair down.

I have very long hair (to the waist), they are bread most of the time, but when I were them loose I can sense people staring. I understand why it was considerated something private. and also it is so annoying when they are loose, if I bend to catch something on the ground they go in my face all the way to the ground!! And when I lay down and want to stand I sometimes ''step'' on them with my elbow!! really I don't endure them loose very often

As a young, queer woman in the early 1990’s, I sold my own very long, auburn hair to a theatrical wig maker. I had hardly any money and had newly left home, moving to a new city. I had definitely seen Les Mis on stage not long before, and it was a totally melodramatic gesture, and didn’t make very much money, but it certainly paid for groceries. Plus it made a good story for a goth girl!

I think this video makes a lot of sense to me now. I never understood why my parents saw me expressing the desire to cut my hair when I was younger as masculine. To me, it was just a change in style and, as I have very thick, heavy hair which can really get hot in the summertime, a relief. In fact, when I finally cut it, they asked if I was transgender. I think, to them, A woman’s worth is so inextricably tied in her outward appearance that having short hair confuses them.

This is excellent! I've had short hair since 2009 and I'm interested in history and historical fashions. I've often had the thought "if I want to do any reenacting I'll probably just end up reenacting as a dude" because I'm not willing to change my hair (I'm also not that tempted by all the undergarments, given that I can't even tolerate wearing underwire bras, so reenacting as a dude still seems more tempting.) But of course people would have had short hair at various points. The short hair is great for me and I never want to go back. I'm of the mindset that everyone of every presentation should try short hair and long hair at least once in their life to figure out what they like, because at the end of the day it's not a permanent decision (obviously it should be one's own choice, not like, a haircut or sumptuary law forced on them.)

when I cut my hair (I have very curly hair - and loads of it) my Swiss granddad loved it saying it reminded him of the women of his youth. That surprised me since he grew up in a working class family close to the city. While my Italian granddad was horryfied saying I looked like a poor farmer's daughter now... him being a farmer himself and all that.
i always loved my long hair, i had it down to my waist and took extensive care of it. i got alopecia when i was 20, which ended in me being completely bald except for a few strands which i had to shave off. it's luckily growing back now (after 2 years), but i've never had short hair in my life, so this video is actually helping me cope with that and help me accept my short hair in a new, comforting way. thank you kaz!
Thank you for doing this video. I just went from shoulder length to a buzz cut. It is so freeing and I've gotten tons of compliments. When my Mom did it 14 years ago everyone just assumed she had cancer. Things are changing slowly.

I have natural long hair that, due to the pure luck of genetics, is constantly under scrutiny. I'm always asked where I got my hair and simply respond with "My parents."
It's interesting how hair donation, which became common when I was in high school, kind of inverts the hair market of the 19th century: people cutting their hair short voluntarily for fashion reasons donating it to charity to help those LESS fortunate!
I'm in my 30s and just cut my hair short for the first time other a yesterday. It was far more liberating than I expected and rly cant imagine going back to lengthy hair in the future. i like short hair because it's cheaper and easier to maintain and i don't like the association between long hair and traditional gender roles. i had waist length hair and the guys that were interested in me had weird ass thoughts about long hair, beauty and femininity. my dad didn't talk to me for a week because i cut my hair short, says a lot about how people perceive women with different hair lengths.

Some girls/women just do not want to be bothered with their hair. I remember being 9 years old and so happy because my mom allowed me to cut it short. Curlers are annoying. I hated picture day at school. She would put my hair up the night before and I couldn't sleep with things.
I totally get the freeing feeling of cutting your hair. I like mine long now just because I think it looks nice but I remember in high school I got the idea in my head to just buzz all my hair off and the thought would not got away until I just did it. it felt so different from what I'm used to but I really liked it, not having to worry about the upkeep or how people perceived me because of my hair. I think everyone should try that at least once because it grows back and it's interesting
