This is literally the song that inspired me to learn instruments
that's freakin awesome
This is the one song I wish I could play fully on the piano.
This song doing gods work
@@seekittycat Genocide?
great taste
General Beatrix, was the reason we named my daughter Beatrix. Such a great character
Almost born in may, but she came a few weeks early. Still, shes my little rose of may!
"May" she become as couraged and goodhearted as the character is. But "may" not repeat her mistakes ;)
I honestly don't get why people don't hate Beatrix. She was willingly involved in multiple counts of genocide against innocent people.
@@Lycanthromancer1 "willingly" is not exactly the case, Beatrix had no idea that branhe was going to nuke the hell out of the tree.
Beatrix was tasked with retrieving the gemstones.
She had been told that the burmecians were plotting an attack on alexandria, and had no reason to think otherwise at this point.
She went to burmecia as a preemptive attack.
which had all for the most part been evacuated. Meanwhile kuja and the black mages were the ones killing anyone who resisted.
In Cleyra beatrix didnt kill anyone, he task still to obtain the stone.
she entered the chapel, took the stone and made an escape. ignoring everyone and retreating to the red rose.
she then witnesses what brahne is willing to do (aka nuke the crap out of everything) she begins to question her morality and loyalty. Also remember she has been the general of the alexandrian army for years, which was commanded by a none insane brahne for many years prior) There was no reason to question orders given, and would have thought the intel was sound.
Beatrix leaves the alexandrian army after rescuing garnet.
So.. canonically. Beatrix never kills anyone in the game.
People love her BECAUSE of the above, she turns against her commander, she questions her loyalties as well as morality.
She swears to protect the princess and becomes a far better person.
(also the beatrix mod expands on a lot of this when she joins the party in disk 3)
Ngl, I always hear Erutan's lyrics with some of these tracks, this one especially.
Those would definitely be on a list of covers I'd be sending to someone who'd recently played this game!
I'd absolutely be ecstatic if Jesse listened to her cover of the song. I listen every now and then because it's so good! I'm going to listen to it again right now in fact. ❤
Or as I first heard her, Katethegreat. I remember when I first discovered her back on Myspace of all things. Had a few chats with her over the years, she's a great musician and a really nice person.
Poor girl had been losing her voice and seen a few doctors. I hope her mending is going well and she can return to her passion.
the blood from my hand wont wash away wash away
You know it's a deeply hitting song when Jesse has to hear it again! ❤️
Everything about this song feels very lonely, especially with it being played by a single instrument. Tracks like this help really orchestrate many themes, scenes & events in the game with it's story. So many wonderful melody's in the game to enjoy that do such a great job at provoking emotion. Absolutely love this game to bits, the story, characters, music, all of it has such a sense of passion around it and that's why it's still my favorite title in the entire Final Fantasy series to this day.
Feels like a person reflecting on their past, the choices made the paths not taken. bittersweet
Than the song reflected itself perfectly for you. For the character it was tight exactly had this reflection of past actions.
When my husband and I got married, we had a string quartet learn the piece and it played as I walked down the aisle. His eyes just lit up as soon as he heard it and then saw me behind my bridesmaids. When we signed the paperwork we had the main FFIX theme and as we left we had Protecting my Devotion.
Ugh. I read this and (happy) cried picturing this ❤
First time I heard this as a kid I remember my eyes welled up, first time I felt true emotion from a video game track as a kid! I genuinely feel Uematsu put his entire being into 9 only!
War leaves its trail, in moonlight so pale, in shadows it flows, in rivers and rivers, so put on my mask, I'll go where they ask, so I might once again see the roses of May. 💞
Interesting that he picked up on the shift between melancholy and contentment because that summarizes Beatrix perfectly.
Final Fantasy IX is my favorite FF game, and I am so hyped to see you react to my favorite song from the game ❤
Loss of Me is my favourite FF9 track and potentially up there for FF in its entirety. End of thought.
Mine too!!!
one of the many song i love, sad but calming too, i listen to it often to appeas myself
i wish jesse would have react to the Beatrix & steiner battle theme version
There is about 3 different versions of this in the actual game, may be more i played this a long time ago, and each has a different mood.
This is the theme of Beatrix and the melody is modified in the other songs which reflect her character. Sword of Doubt, Rose of May, and Something to Protect basically contain the emotional texture of her character arc. From doubt to introspection to purpose.
Would you be willing to make a video and talk about your general impressions of the entire FF IX soundtrack someday in the future, once you're done with the game? I think it would be really interesting to listen to your thoughts on it.
A beautiful theme that perfectly represents the character during the time in which it plays.
Fist time Jesse repeat the song and analize, beautiful theme. 🥰❤️
To me there's something sacrificial sounding to this, and the very simple but poignant notes are forthright. There's something that's, 'knowing you are going to your doom, but dutifully doing so' and there is a sort of 'roses' beauty to it. An earnestness of heart. I love this track.
Love this song so much
Was wondering if he would pick up on the connection between this and Sword of Doubt since they're back to back
What a coincidence! I'm playing FFIX on my emulator (I'm arrived at the fourth CD) after 15 years and its OST is one of the reasons. I appreciate how this song describes shogun Beatrix better than her actions.
Loss of Me was the original title, but I believe this was a localisation error. Yet strangely, given the context of the track, both titles are perfectly fitting. Thanks again!
I like to think of this track as part of a trilogy. With Sword of Doubt being the first, Roses of May being the second and a third one that wasn't requested as a final third. I'm happy you'll get to experience it in game!
@Phoenix Yep that's the one!
Rose of May is the name of the song. Loss of me is a translation issue
It's the other way around, Rose of May is Beatrix's theme, Beatrix is the rose. Roses seem to be something associated with Beatrix with the Red Rose airship too which she ends up commanding
Loss of Me is a fan translation. The only official localization was Rose of May.
gonna be honest I never got sad vibes from this song personally
but I can't describe how I feel about it either, it's not sad but not exactly happy. The vibe I imagine from it is sitting in the halls of a castle or a ball room, while everything is all lit up but I'm by myself...but it doesn't quite feel lonely either. Idk, music is weird and it's different for everyone.
I find it pensive, reflective. I agree that I don't think it's sad, I think it's about coming to terms with the horrible things she (Beatrix) did in her past and her commitment to being better.
Another great piano theme from this game is Dark City Treno.
Truth!
Awww yeah, this song is amazing.
I think remember hearing this in dissidia 012
Any chance to see a react to the Erutan cover?
Man, This just reminds me of the version made for Dissidia NT, that goes so HARD. But goodluck finding it, for some reason it is especially copyright struck down. :(
Interesting use of the title. If you read it like Furigana, it could sound like Loses of My, or My Loses.
The songs telling Beatrix's story are amazing. Sword of doubt, rose of may and something to protect.
The story of a conflicted knight, sworn to one's duty despite knowing its wrong, a conflict of character. The music represents these dualistic beautifuly.
It's really too bad that Beatrix herself ruins it. The hate I feel towards her just sours any and everything she's involved with.
@@Lycanthromancer1 i feel like she needed more time for redemption. She literally just changes sides and its all good. Honestly she should have been a party member rest of the game.
@@brandonpritchard6696 Given that she was a willing party to multiple genocides and was dumb enough to be wondering if that's okay, I don't think it's possible for her to earn enough redemption to even make me feel neutral about her.
@@Lycanthromancer1 i guess it would be accurate though. Knights could not deny commands or they would likely be killed as traitors.
If you want an even better version, check out Erutan's fan lyric cover.
If you want a more up-beat version, Protecting My Devotion.
The orchestral version is amazing...
Where?
Through this song I learned to play piano
🎊
And the orchestrated version takes it up a notch...
Oh Beatrix...
i did with my piano
"I react to video game music so you don't have to!"
As a game OST lover, you should really check out and react to some of FromSoftware's OSTs (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring...). They're just fire.
A lot of those games just have walls of sound.
The only songs that are layered are ludwigs themes and the calm songs
Are they? They must require context or something. The sounds sound like nothing to me, for the most part. I gave up on those listens.
It is very bizarre to me that you listen to the whole OST before playing the game. Surely it must rob so much of the emotional impact of the story?
Maybe that depends on the person, but that definitely applies to me. I'm in the "music is a spoiler" camp lol
Too bad this song only plays on her airship...first time I see you repeat a song just shows how good it is
I think it plays one more time in Alexandria later in the game
