Although not as clean and crisp as later HLN songs, this was literally THE song that gave many people their first taste of Huey Lewis & the News. It will always have a place in fan's hearts and memories! :)

Yep. I listened to this song fifty times in a row when I first heard it. It took me a couple of days to finally let the tape continue on to Don't Make Me Do It; this song was addictive. This is still my favorite HLN song.
Funny note: I've heard the song roughly a million times. I never even knew there was a video for it. And it is gloriously cheesy. Chris' guitar solo is amazing with the deadpan stare, moving nothing but his hands the whole time. The whole thing is great.

For a band that was known for very inventive and classic rock videos....all I can say is YIKES to this early offering lol. And who was that walking along the surf, getting in Huey's shot??

The best concert I ever saw, Huey Lewis and the News with the Tower of Power horns, U of A McKale center. Went to three encores, cooking every minute. Audience got him out a fourth time, and he came out with a towel around his neck. Sat down on the front of the stage and just said, in all honesty, 'we're all out of towels'. We gave him/them one last standing ovation to send them on their way.

And with THIS song, before MTV, shown on POP CLIPS, was when the definitive 80 band and fashion was born! Chris wearing Chuck Taylor's. I saw this and said YES. I ordered a pair and it took 3 or 4 weeks 17.00! Me and another guy brought this style to our high school. Nobody knew Huey Lewis yet. I told my buddy, seriously, this is really cool. Hi tops man,! The style hit big. I was the first one with spiked hair like Chris Hayes. Pretty soon all the jock boys were doing it too.

Some Of My Lies Are True (Sooner Or Later)
Huey Lewis, Huey Lewis and the News
Say you want to be a friend of mine
    See me all the time
You don't care what I do
But it all sounds the same to me
    Hey, can't you see
It's just like I told you
I know you think that I've
    Been stringing you along
And that I've told you a few but
Sooner or later when you say I love you
    You're gonna realize that
Some of my lies are true
I never told you that I was the one
    Said it just for fun
You know, you knew it too
So why so much on the telephone
    I'm never home
It's just like I told you
Because it's real the way you used to make me feel
It makes it so hard to say
But nothing can change the way I feel today
    Don't you see that
Sooner or later when you say I love you
    You're gonna realize that
Some of my lies are true
Sooner or later when you say I love you
    You're gonna realize that
Some of my lies are true
Because it's real the way you used to make me feel
It makes it so hard to say but
Nothing can change the way I feel today

Not a popular opinion, but for a person that loved that slightly punkier/power pop side of New Wave... this is intruiging as hell to me to hear, despite it's not that great of a song. They were right to move on from this kind of sound for their career... but still glad they made it to document the time.

Well let's see: bands that were labeled Power pop included The Knack, The Romantics, Squeeze, Blondie, The Cars, The Jam, XTC, The Boomtown Rats and Elvis Costello & the Attractions. All these bands were also called New Wave. Although Power pop as a genre both predates and post-dates New Wave, bands who played in that style from roughly '77-'82 were commonly placed under the New Wave umbrella. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound to me like you know much about that era.

@@janesmith7676 You've got a point there's definitely some crossover, I guess I tend to associate new wave with synthpop, so more Thompson Twins or Human League style.
As a Cars fan too I see them as arena rock but yeah they were heavy on synths.
Nah I'm an 80s kid (late 80s anyway, born 84) so I literally grew up on music like Huey

@@xennial80sxberner I see what you're saying, but synthpop was just a somewhat later development that came out of the overall New Wave movement. It is an umbrella term for a wide range of bands that spawned in a similar time frame, that kind of deviated from the usual 70s radio rock sound (like prog, arena rock, metal). They were all labeled either punk or new wave originally (the terms were used interchangeably), but the terms branched off to apply to more specific sounds. You had "power pop' side of new wave who were more guitar-oriented, largely 50s/60s garage rock and Brit Invasion influenced bands. You had artsy eccentric bands like Talking Heads, B-52s, Devo, The Stranglers. Then the synthpoppy stuff you mentioned, which because it made the biggest commercial splash in the US (due to in part to MTV promotion) probably lead to your idea that the bands you mentioned were the core of new wave. But most of those bands was arrived pretty late to the scene, so much so that in the UK, they were considered too late to be labeled new wave. But you did mention, Human League and Thompson Twins, and incidentally they are exceptions - they date back to the late-70s releasing material that was more cutting edge and experimental sounding (thus made no commercial impact in the US). Lots of synthpop bands actually went through such a phase, and not only that, many of the synthies started off playing in punk bands! It's an interesting history there.
Anyway, didn't meant to write a chapter book, but that's admittedly because I'm a bit of a fanatic of this particular scene/era of music. Hope that made enough sense.
