Global National: April 16, 2024 | Highlights from Canada's 2024 federal budget

  • In tonight's top story: federal government has released its 2024 budget, taking aim at improving affordability amid Canada's slowing economy, and an uphill road for the Liberals in the polls. David Akin looks at the highlights from the new fiscal plan, including its focus on helping younger Canadians.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has tabled her fourth federal budget, which is forecasted to leave a $39.8-billion deficit. Global National's Dawna Friesen speaks with Freeland about the increase in the capital gains tax, the country's productivity problem and the criticism to the Liberals' spending policies.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed disappointment in the federal government's 2024 budget, saying the Liberals "ignored the opportunity to take on corporate greed." Mercedes Stephenson breaks down Singh's comments on the budget and whether they could hint at the NDP voting against it.
As Israel pledges to respond to Iran's drone and missile attack, the Middle East remains on edge as it remains unclear what that retaliation will look like. Crystal Goomansingh looks at how Israel's allies are continuing their calls for de-escalation, as the country's two top military officials signal the opposite.
Plus, Manitoba RCMP have arrested three 17-year-old boys, all of whom are high school hockey players, in relation to two separate reports of hazing at a hotel in Winnipeg. Melissa Ridgen looks at what is known so far about the investigation.

As a small business owner, my capital gain, when I sell my business building is my ONLY form of pension on which I can retire. Unlike a gov't employee who receives a great pension without clawbacks! It's been my "blood, sweat, and tears" along with endless hours of hard work that made my business work. The government hasn't helped anywhere along the way. So why now do they get to just take more? Canada's small business environment is dying in a painful process.

For 40,000 people to pay for that debt over 5 years is about $95,000 per year, per person. I don't think most people, even if they are "rich", want almost $100,000 taken out of their pocket every year, to be redistributed to other people. In 1987 I was 27 years old and I bought my first house in Toronto for 130K with 15K down. I was making 25 dollars per hour as a carpenter. That house recently sold again for 1.3 million. 10X what I paid for it. Today a carpenter makes 50 dollars an hour which is 2X what I made back then. This sums up the entire mess that has been created for our young people. Not fair.

I advocate for a budget compromise system: Opposition party can mark line items as "wants" instead of needs, and if the country is in a deficit, the governing party needs to choose which "wants" to cut in order to reach a surplus. The Liberals can do this too when they become an opposition party. They can cut any line item, but the "wants" system favors a compromise and an actual use for opposition in Canada.

The promise to focus on younger Canadians means they are in for one massive tax bill. The promise to tax the wealthiest will result in exactly what happened in other countries that do this - the wealthiest will move or find ways to hide their money and the tax burden on the rest of us will go up. The massive spending will drive inflation up even higher and at the end of the day all Canadians will get is more government employees not providing useful services.

Education, education, education. This is how the government can improve productivity and earning power in Canada. Not just university graduates, but college graduates as well. We need a lot more trades people. AI is great. But you need STEM people to develop that technology.

So going after the higher earners will come down on the lower ones by the way of higher costs of the products and services they provide. When will the governments learn that you can't take money from the rich that they won't get back from the poor. This in the end will cause more inflation or for some of these company's to pack up and leave to greener pastures.

Do you understand what inflation actually is? Higher costs loosely linked to taxation is not inflation, just so you know.

Inflation is when your dollar becomes less worthy. If no one wants your dollar, its value will go down, it will be worth less in terms of other currencies. Remember that we buy stuff made in other coubtries. We pay them our dollars. What do they buy from us? What is Canada producing and selling to the rest of the world? other countries need our dollars to buy stuff from us. If we sell less, they don't want our dollars as much. The value of our dollar comes down and our imports of stuff from other countries become more expensive. Our prices of stuff sold in stores rise. We call it inflation.

The new Olympic clothing line is the big story here. I don’t get the “Canadian proud” feeling, as the old simple red and white style gave.. I don’t think I even saw a leaf now that I think about it💁‍♂️
