Thank you for this interview Dr. I’m going through this process right now (sadly). I was trying so hard to make it to the finish line (65) , but made it to last summer at age 58, SPMS. @@DrBrandonBeaber So basically MS verified, but can't you still move your hands? If so, DENIED! Go find some work that you can do just with your hands, hopefully you won't have to stand for long like a cashier though!
My MS diagnosis was a game changer vis a vis the Israeli National Insurance. Whereas before, my stipend was determined by a collection of disabilities in different medical fields - orthopedic, psychiatric, neurologic etc. - from the moment they received the MS diagnosis, there's been a set disability and special services stipend with no more fights. 🤗
I'm glad it worked out for you. I suppose one "advantage" of having multiple sclerosis in the disability system is that it's well known to be a serious and potentially disabling illness.
Excellent video! I was one of those who choose to work part time so I could keep my medical benefits. When I did apply for SSDI I was surprised it only took five weeks for approval. I send 15 years of medical records to SS myself, along with records from my employer which indicated LOAs and different positions to keep me in the game. I was lucky to have a great department manager.
I guess I was "lucky", because I was diagnosed and retired medically after serving 4 years. So I was given a 50% Service Connected disability. I worked in retail management for about 12 years. My store closed, and it was getting tough to do my job anyway with all the standing and ladder climbing (I sold shoes). So I got unemployment for 6 months while I applied for SSDI. Luckily I had tons of medical records from the VA for the SS administration to look at. About 7 years later I went to the DAV (disabled American Veterans) organization to help me get my rating up to 100%, and that was paid retroactively from when I stopped working, so I got a LARGE check for that. Veterans with MS, use a Veterans Service Organization like the DAV for help!
I'm glad the system worked for you. A lot of people have had wait times for SSDI hearings for longer than they can collect unemployment or state disability. I heard that MS is often considered to be a service-connected disability for people with agent orange exposure.
@@DrBrandonBeaber the VA can now recognize MS as a service connected disability AFTER a person has left the military and is dxd as a civilian (up to seven years, I think).

One which most of us don’t like, but it does explain some things at least. Regarding medical benefits, I’ve found having this disability doesn’t really provide any medical benefits. Other than the diagnosis, and DMT’s. And thank goodness for that, and doctors like you. I’m nearing 30 years as a firefighter-paramedic. In AZ municipal fire departments, we don’t pay into SS system. For 30 years I haven’t paid into SS. It would have been nice to maybe have tried to petition for SSDI, but obviously I wouldn’t be awarded that. If I bring this disability to my HR, my ultimate fear is that they’ll only be kind to me while showing me the door out.
My experience with California state/city employees is that they tend to have a favorable disability/retirement system, but I can't speak for the AZ municipal fire department. Hopefully everything works out.

The time last insured problem is very unfortunate. It should be based on lifetime work instead of recent work since there are many people with spotty work history related to their disabilities.
I wish I knew this in 2015-2017. I filed for disability in 2015, and since I don't know how to complain, I was denied for years. Now I am too late for any of this.
I’m in the midst of the this now and have read much of Mr. Ginsberg’s information about the process. I did check in with a local attorney, specializing in SSDI, prior to filing. He gave me many good pointers in an hour long conversation and said “call him back if I get denied. If I don’t, then great!” It’s been quite the process, and my application is not even halfway through yet.
It's definitely not something you want to be dealing with when you have ongoing medical issues, but hopefully you get approved. I think being well-informed about the process prior to filling out the paperwork definitely increases your chances.
I kept getting denied and finally used an attorney. MS for me, is a new body every day. The disability doctor I was sent to saw ALL my symptoms at that visit. Haven’t been that bad since. I was approved

My last shift 10-22-2004, I still mourn the loss of my career at age 34. Find hobbies to help fill the void.

I was denied SSI because we have two cars. 😠
So would you have to sell one care in order to get benefits?
@@DrBrandonBeaber yep, that’s the only way to even apply. I applied about 6 months ago and received a call from the SS office asking about the cars!
@@nikkiuk I think that's why Jonathan tries to get his clients into the SSDI system if they qualify since it isn't means tested.

How does SSDI work when you are self employed. I have MS and have my real estate license I barely work because it’s hard to show houses at times.
