Why Tottenham Wanted Mathys Tel So Badly

  • Tottenham Hotspur secured the late signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munch on deadline day. The French Under-21 international arrives on load until the end of the season, with Spurs having seen off approaches from Man United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and even Arsenal to secure his services. But who is he? And why did Ange Postecoglu personally pick up the phone to convince him to join? Adam Clery looks at why he's probably the most exciting signing of the transfer window.

In fact, I noticed you mentioned the nuances of ange ball and ignorance around his subtle tweaks, I’d love to see a video backing this up, because yeah it’s enraging to see the common narrative that ange doesn’t make changes to his systems when he clearly does, I just think most aren’t adept at spotting these changes

    • @QuotidianStupidity

@@QuotidianStupidity A healthy VdV on the pitch is the solution to this problem. We are currently playing an 18yr old DM in this role so of course we are having trouble. Incidentally, in the last game, away against one of the most potent counter attacking set-ups in the league, Ange adjusted the defensive set-up and completely shut them out.
The man is one of the best tacticians around, and it is flabbergasting the criticism he gets. People just don't watch football, apparently. This season he has outdone Guardiola, Slot, Emery and Ten-Fraud to name a select few.

    • @QuotidianStupidity
      @QuotidianStupidity 44 минуты назад

@@pauljohnware you can’t base the whole system around the availability of one injury prone defender, that’s madness: these tactics are why we have so many muscle injuries.
Yeh he adjusted his tactics for Brentford, and he did it vs City away. He still doesn’t do it enough, doesn’t make meaningful in game changes enough, and to say he’s performing well is debatable given the league position.
As it stands the jury is still open because of the cups. Drop out of them and he’s not done a good job.

@@QuotidianStupidity There appears to be a lot you're not seeing.
He frequently changes personnel and tactical set up in games - often changing the structure of the midfield at half time to this end. And again - he has adjusted defensive set-up frequently, significantly, to account for the loss of VdV's pace and reading of the game (and Romero's ball-playing, vision and aggressiveness). There is only so much he can do with the already threadbare squad and compounding injuries. Our back-up CBs, as professional as they are, are properly limited.
Incidentally, there is some good analysis to show that the injuries, are the cause of our malaise; and they are - for the most part - not the fault of the system. YT won't let me post the links but look up profspur blog, "It's the Injuries" and "The Postecoglou Experiment"
We have lost games we shouldn't have lost, there is no denying this, but even acknowledging that - Ange is working miracles.

Because Bayern had 7 forwards - Kane, Sane, Olise, Gnabry, Muller, Coman and Tel. The reality is that Muller was always going to be the Kane fill in. The lad is 19 … that’s a lot of talent he’d have to bypass and outrank.

Initially, felt very frustrated that we missed out on the loan deal because we have eliminated 2 attackers without any direct replacements that too when we are hardly scoring any goals. Later though, after realising Spurs pay €10M loan fee, my faith in our recruitment board increased. (Amrabat situation in 23/24 was the same, we didn't buy him). He is a much better fit at Spurs than at United anyways.

That driving into the central areas is what spurs need. The running down the byline and crossing seldomly works and the consistency in which we continue to use that tactics is abhorring. It makes us look clueless. Those tactics are for clubs like arsenal, players that have excellent crosses and then the st must always be ready. Arsenal uses their cam to press , to let their st’s get to a better and more comfortable position. Spurs on the other hand, allow their st do most of the pressing, so even if they eventually win the ball, there’s noone there to finish which slows down the move allowing opposition to get more comfortable. A player who can drive down the middle will help open up spaces in wider areas making it easier for those passes, or open up spaces for a run and an easy finish from a player 😊

@@J657-s1t I agree with you. I hate watching our wingers doing the same move by hugging the touch line then just randomly hitting a cross in the box… it’s so boring and isn’t a sustainable long-term tactic.
Ajayi’s goal against Elfsborg was a breath of fresh air, watching a winger drive into a central space and score by linking up with the striker.
We rarely score goals like that where a player creates a chance for himself or by driving into the box and finishing.
It’s what Son used to do but is unable to now, I would like to see Ange maybe adapt his tactics in that sense. To be fair, he has in some way. Our fullback’s touch map and heat map is much different from this season and last season, they’re much wider and less central.
I just hope that Tel signs for us because I see him as a long term option for when Son ultimately retires.

You say you hate it when people say Ange doesn't adapt, yet you contract your statement when you say Tel doesn't play in the style of Ange's tactics. Yes, Ange adapts his players to his tactics rather than adapting his tactics to the strengths of his players. The man does not adapt. His style of play has a lot to do with our overwhelming injuries but he kept at it until we lost pretty much all of our starters. Adapt isn't even in Ange's dictionary.
