Mezza supplies Donair cones to almost every pizza shop in the province. You can go anywhere and get a Mezza Donair. They were much better back in the day. The sauce should not be garlicky. The meat should be combined with a shocking proportion of fresh garlic, some spices and that’s it. The sauce is condensed milk, powdered sugar and vinegar in a 2 :2:1 ratio. Sweet and tangy sauce on very garlicky beef that’s been roasting on a spit all wrapped in a hot pita is an experience. Mezza franchised the entire industry and it’s not the same anymore. It’s all the same experience and it’s not the experience that made it famous.
Gotta get your donair at KOD! Mezza js great, but not my fav for donairs. If making the sauce at home, use the recipe with sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated. It's smoother than the one with added sugar.
@@DelightfulTravellers Yes, And then even KOD isn't the best donair in the city, its Roberts on Windmill Road, Dartmouth! Absolute massive beast of a donair. Been going there for over 20 years.

Yes we used to get the shoo dogs too! Almost forgot about those. It's been years. I'd say the fish is fresh haddock. ❤ u guys!
Tomavinos has been in their current location for 10 or 12 years. For many years prior to that, they were located on South St between Barrington and Hollis (they shared a building, which has since been torn down, with Taj Mahal, Cafe Chianti, and a Thai spot). Meatball sub at Salvatores is my go-to each time I stop in. So good!
I lived in Halifax in the early 90s. To go to place for fish and chips back then was carmilla's. Late night food was three Pizza Corner downtown. and hungover breakfast was at the Ardmore Tea Room. And Saturday afternoons were always at Peddler's Pub or across the street at the Split Crow. I had a lot of fun and ate a lot of great food in Halifax. Thanks I really enjoyed the show.

Trevor and Anna, visiting your hometown/city can be a surprise and/or a challenge. We often forget what we have in our own backyards, trends change, food spots come and go, and our own pallets are broadened by travel so memories can be fleeting. You have provided some varied and interesting places to try if/when I am able to travel to Halifax. Thank you. You have made me hungry for some variety in my diet. I am going to try to make some of my own sauces based on the ingredients you have described. Anna, is it olives in general which you do not like or specific types (e.g. green, black, or Greek) because there are many different flavors and ripenesses (similar to varieties in mushrooms). If you object to the brininess, then rinse or soak your olives. If they are too bitter, that is a sign of them being too old and spoiling. I'm team Trevor in regard to olives. "French fries" versus "chips?" Brace yourselves: the long fat ones you described are called "steak fries" in the USA, and round flat ones are called "chips." Yes, the long thin ones we do call "French fries." I'm wirh you, both. Fish & chips should never taste "fishy." If they do, then the fish is probably old or spoiling. I am excited, for you, about your big announcement. I'm 99.999% sure what it will be... you've given quite a few hints already. But, I'll give no spoilers, so those who are patiently waiting can enjoy being surprised. ¡Hasta pronto!
I typically don't like any Olives at all. But I'm trying them and Trevor keeps saying wait until I try them in Greece! Steak fries? Haven't heard that one before 🙃 - Anna
@DelightfulTravellers I forgot: tartar sauce vs. vinegar. I prefer tartar sauce myself, but I do not find malt vinegar objectionable. Malt vinegar is a New England regional thing. I remember being in Vermont as a youth, and my family stopped for lunch. When we were served fish and chips, we asked for ketchup, and the waitress was curious why. When we told her we use it on French fries she was amaze as she said in Vermont they use malt vinegar on their fries. We each tried the other's version and broadened our travel experience.
Once again you guys have a vlog that makes my mouth water! Btw...I love olives. Particularly on pizza and in a martini. Also on a charcuterie plate. Peanut butter on a burger...not sure about that though. I usually don't want any sweetness in a burger. Strangely enough though...try to mix some into ramen. Weirdly good!

I am from Boston and spent 20 summers in coastal Maine where my maternal ancestors are from. We love seafood. While working at an investment fund in Boston I went to Chinatown and brought a shrimp chop suey dish back to the desk. A co-worker complained of the odor. I told her you live in Boston, a seaport, get used to it.
Years back I was at Ralph’s. And I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich something. Anyways, long story short it’s honestly one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever eaten in my whole life. And I still talk about it to this day.
When I visit I have to have the following…just because: a donair, an Alexander Keith, garlic fingers, a Tim Hortons donut, a lobster roll and a Nanaimo bar.
The girl gotta be from somewhere else. How you going to put marinara sauce on garlic fingers. Donair sauce runs through our blood as Atlantic Canadians. You pulling a Toronto stunt using anything other then east coast donair sauce. You guys should do a review on the world famous Pictou county pizza. With the brown sauce
@@DelightfulTravellerswell yeah I’m still here and I love Donairs but I personally don’t have a go to for me there all the same and I prefer bacon garlic fingers and for fish I prefer homemade with cod fish since my mum is a Newfie and we get the fish from my uncle who is in Newfoundland
So, this list is woefully incomplete. I drive 5 hours round trip to go to the Bicycle Thief, and order "Fall Off The Bone Shortribs". I've had them at least a couple of dozen times now, and they are consistantly perfect. This is the best meal in any restaurant I've ever eaten in anywhere on earth.
@@MemphisBlues-JG The Bicycle Thief is great! We’ve had some amazing meals there (and we have videos there as well). But obviously a video that is about 5 dishes you have to try isn’t all encompassing. We didn’t say “the only 5 dishes you have to try in Halifax”. This was more about quick and famous dishes in Halifax. But we could easily make 20-30 videos in Halifax and never run out of amazing foods and dishes! - Anna
100% understand that yeah... But it to me, it just tasted like a peanut butter sandwich inside a burger 😂 Asian food often has some spice so peanuts work perfectly in there - Trevor
Oh dear, yes there’s lots of different local names for the same foods here in the UK….you’ll never find agreement, especially between north and south! For me, deep fried potatoes are always chips no matter how thick or thin, and fish ideally needs to be eaten on the day it’s caught because, as the old English saying goes “ fish and house guests smell after three days” Nice!! 😂😂
U.K person here. Definitely fries Id say 😂. I would say the U.K fish you had was fishy in the U.K because it was haddock, which is a stronger flavour. If you have cod or pollock.it isn't fishy. Although the freshness is true too, I agree. We have tartare source if we eat it in a restaurants but not so much from a fish and chip shop. Great video.
@@DelightfulTravellers. To be honest you didn’t miss much. It was fish and chips, that’s really all there is to say. I didn’t get the hype about the place. They used your standard batter on the fish. You either deep fry it too long, just right or not long enough.
We make videos in the UK all the time, and trust me, it's not unusual for British people to go absolutely mental about the smallest things. 😂 We quite literally just had someone get angry the other day about me calling a tuna fish baguette fishy as well. Maybe they just don't use the word fishy to describe a strong fish odor. Cleary as Canadians, we do. 🤷♂️
LOL.. the Brits are wild when it comes to their food 🙃 I just can't imagine being that worked up if someone tried Canadian food. We just wouldn't care at all - Trevor

can get Donair and Garlic Fingers all over the Maritimes, i moved to Quebec and I've never missed food so much in my life
Years back I was at Ralph’s. And I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich something. Anyways, long story short it’s honestly one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever eaten in my whole life. And I still talk about it to this day.
While eating you have to watch for flying pubes from the dancers lol
I remember a sign Ralph’s had one time, it’s so unforgettable.
New dancers from Montreal
Come try our fresh clams
This was genius lol
you have to get a donair from a pizza shop if youre in halifax/dartmouth that donair really lacked crisp
Well often the pizza shop donairs are extra greasy. Not that donairs are healthy to begin with but this one was great - Trevor
With the brown sauce
prob used to pizza sticks and Mariana sauce
@RottieGuy1980 garbage
@@TheKingOfKings818 haha only had it once myself at Papa's John's in Red Deer, I'm def all about the donair sauce.
How the heck are they gettin a donair from mezza!? Theres way better donair shops in halifax KOD for one
Nah Donaire sauce sucks gotta use gravy
Pizzadelic or Panada for Donairs in Fairview Clayton park, of the city. the best!
🙂❤👍Thank You Trevor & Anna 🙂❤👍
🤗
I will be visiting Red deer in September, any thing you whould suggest to visit there.
We haven't been to RD - Anna
i never heard where you bought the peanut butter burger?
Darryl's
I’m from Halifax NS born and raised and currently still here
Have you tried any of the food we ate? - Anna
Don’t get why you guys get so many hate by picking mezza, ppl this guys are from Halifax they know what they’re eating.
Great video and God bless
- Anna
YUM! The new Pizza Stop in Dartmouth is YEAH YEAHS pizza❤❤❤
That's a great spot! - Anna
Usually haddock because its popular here and cheaper ❤
Yeah that's what we were thinking 🤗 - Anna
If you think about it, peanuts are a part of many Asian dishes using beef. A PB burger is kind of the same.
haha.. thanks for watching Helen. We're learning a lot about fries these days 😂 - Anna
Garlic fingers + Donair sauce is probably my favorite tasting thing on the planet. Extremely dangerous lol. I limit myself to 4 per year max.
I would never goto mezza for a donair.. try Tony’s
Why would you go to Mezza for a donair 😭
Why not? Mezza is great. It might not be the best in the city but it's pretty solid - Trevor
Toney's Donaire is the best
hey guuys from moncton bro your neighbors nice to just be a new sub
Welcome aboard! 🤗 - Anna
Great video.
haha fries! I got it right - Trevor
What about lobster? Where can I find a good one?
You should try donair from Tony’s pizza
I've had it! Great stuff 👌 - Trevor
I miss having the clams and chips 🍟 from John's.
Sadly we’ve never made it there! - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers. To be honest you didn’t miss much. It was fish and chips, that’s really all there is to say. I didn’t get the hype about the place.
They used your standard batter on the fish. You either deep fry it too long, just right or not long enough.
I’ve eaten at John’s many times. It was just fish and chips, nothing special about it.
We make videos in the UK all the time, and trust me, it's not unusual for British people to go absolutely mental about the smallest things. 😂
We quite literally just had someone get angry the other day about me calling a tuna fish baguette fishy as well.
Ya wants 70s style pizza n donair . Sassy's pizza cole harbour. Only place i know around that uses brick oven and makes his own donair meat on location. Since 86 i did partime drivin for like 15 pizza places . Drove city bus for 7 years ive tired it all.
No pizza corner after a night at the Deck??
That's where the Mezza was
Mezza supplies Donair cones to almost every pizza shop in the province. You can go anywhere and get a Mezza Donair.
They were much better back in the day. The sauce should not be garlicky. The meat should be combined with a shocking proportion of fresh garlic, some spices and that’s it. The sauce is condensed milk, powdered sugar and vinegar in a 2
:2:1 ratio. Sweet and tangy sauce on very garlicky beef that’s been roasting on a spit all wrapped in a hot pita is an experience.
Mezza franchised the entire industry and it’s not the same anymore. It’s all the same experience and it’s not the experience that made it famous.
Love the video - but honestly, as a Haligonian, I am quite shocked that you opted for Mezza instead of Tony's to highlight donair.
Both are pretty good... Mezza was closer to our condo 😉 - Trevor
I miss my city! I’ve heard it’s changed a lot.
It's changed a lot... for the better in our opinion - Trevor
Mezza for a donair is blasphemous 😞 tomivinos is absolutely fantastic. They've been in the city for a few decades. Fantastic Freddy's is the best fish and chips in halfax . Outside the city there's other good ones as well. The burger and the meatball subs I agree are good and are both worth a try.
it's called sweet sauce in alberta lot's of lebanese people great donairs and they have garlic sauce that isn't sweet.
I was puzzled when they asked if I wanted sweet sauce or tzatziki sauce when in Red Deer
Ouch $19.79 for a burger too expensive does it have a side order for fries/drink or salad?
It includes fries only. We opted for just the burger and sadly they didn't adjust the price - Trevor
I like olives 😊
You're from NS and you only eat one every 3 years?! What lol. I'm mind blown. As a born and raised Scotian boy i usually eat a donair once a week on average. I have eaten donairs from every corner of every province in the Maritimes. Ns by far the best.
I’m dating myself but Darrell’s…was it once called “My other Brother Darrell’s”? I absolutely LOVE Mezza! Their chicken shawarma is the best I’ve ever had!😋😋😋
It was called that way back in the day! Mezza is great 🤤- Anna
Their chicken shawarma really is the best !!
We dont have a mezza is my town in nb ..but each time my daughter comes up from Fredericton, I get her to bring me 2 of them 😂
I remember that. They had to change the name for legal reasons
@@MikeHart72 that makes sense. Thanks so much!😀
That’s not the right place to get a donair that’s the spot for there chicken wrap
To each their own.. their donair was great 👌 - Trevor
Donairs from Mezza & not getting pizza & cheesecake from Salvatore's 🤢
No - that is NOT a chip! I am always surprised that Nova Scotians are not always fish addicts!
From the UK huh? haha - Trevor
