What an embarrassment. Just a few words into to 1st speakers speech the mayor said "let me stop you right there" and right there she violated that speakers 1A rights. When the mayor is at a council meeting sitting behind that bench she is a government representative and is acting as such. The mayor had no right to silence anyone here.

Mayor Owens has turned out to be a real disappointment considering she fought racism and bullies to get where she is today. Eastpointe has a reputation for racism having changed its name from "East Detroit" in the 1990's to make it a more "white" municipality. In fact, Mayor Owens lost multiple races for the council before US Attorney Barbara McQuade (who I admire greatly) successfully brought a serious civil rights/voting rights case for ranked choice voting in Eastpointe. I have no doubt that Babs McQuade would be so disappointed in Owens behavior -- Frankly, Owens actions are no different than the good ol (white) boys club that silenced people of color in Eastpointe for decades. We can't allow such hypocrisy to stand.
I personally would like to know why she separated from the Sheriff's Department after only serving 11 years -- It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was behavior related. Beyond that, it's ridiculous how poor the Mayor's communication skills are -- She speaks in basic juvenile fashion at best, completely unable to articulate formal legal words and sentences. We hold our public officials to a higher standard -- Her attitude (decorum), shxtty-tone, and her lacking the most basic understanding of Roberts Rules of Order raises serious questions of her qualifications and ability to serve.
Word to Wise: Perhaps it's important to note that the Mayor won election by only 19 votes. Just 19 votes!

    • @SquareNoggin

Did she really fight racism though? In 2022?
Color me a bit skeptical... Maybe projecting racial beefs onto everything is part of the problem...

As the city attorney said, speakers recognized during the hearing of the public are allowed "free reign of topics" and may individually criticize members of the body. Such speech is protected by the First Amendment. The mayor does not have the authority to interrupt a speaker for discussing a police report, legal proceeding, or other public matters. Owens' behavior at this meeting was shameful. If she will not respect the constitutional rights of all residents, she must resign.

    • @MattSchonert

@@josephkelley6049 As the city's attorney said, speakers during hearings of the public may discuss any topic. That includes court proceedings. The mayor's first amendment right to freedom of speech does not entitle her to interrupt speakers who are exercising theirs during hearings of the public. In addition, each council member, including the mayor, is allotted their own time to speak at the end of each meeting.

@@josephkelley6049 why ad hominem? For someone to call another an "idiot" then get the 4th amendment wrong is ironic to say the least. (Not to mention the spelling of amendment. Doesn't that red underline bother you?)
Anyway, the 4th amendment may begin with that phrase, but it has to do with being secure from unreasonable searches and seizures. It was written into the Bill of Rights because the British used to just enter houses and search for anything that could be considered unlawful. They were warrantless searches. So you are correct that she is protected from a warrantless search, but not sure what that has to do with this meeting?
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

This whole thing if fueled by an incident that occurred in July where she was at an event in which politicians are invited to attend but not encouraged to speak at. She took it upon herself to get her arrogant tail onto the stage and give a speech that she didn’t have permission to do. Then when one of the politicians confronted her and fussed her out (never put his hands on her mind you) she resulted in trying to get a restraining order against him. I live in Eastpointe and obtained a copy of the police report. Mayor Owens helped herself to a microphone at a private nonprofit's event after they had explicitly told her that she was not to address the audience, as they wanted the event to be non-political. The nonprofit's president, who is also a city council member, scolded her for the intrusion. She claimed that she had been assaulted and made a report to the police and petitioned for a PPO against him. Upon investigation, the evidence did not corroborate the allegations made. Charges were not filed and the PPO was denied.

Their speech was stifled and their ability to redress their grievances with their government was also hampered. That is the entire point of these city council meetings during the time given to citizens to speak.

And while I fully support the Federal Lawsuit that led to Ranked Choice voting to make things more fair and representative (as the entire council is elected At-large with a 40% Black Population in the city), her behavior has been a slap in the face to the civil rights community who fought so hard to put her in a more fair position to get elected in the first damn place. Her unnecessary grudge and ghetto "Black-Bxtch-Attitiude" is grossly misguided towards Harvey. He wasn't the one in the 90's and beyond who was in the good ol white boy club of bullies changing the name from East Detroit to Eastpointe to whitewash the town. Nobody's allowed to say anything "racial or discrimnatory at that mic" ...?
What? What's that even mean? In terms of actually making coherent statements with a clear meaning, that sentence is terribls. It was "discrimnatory" to choose what you had for breakfast. The word "racial" as an adjective doesn't really have a clear meaning in this context either. Does she mean they can't speak about anything that has anything to do with the way groups of human beings can be distinguished according to their shared ancestry? I suspect that would take a great deal of what this particular mayor likes to discuss off the table...
But of course, we can surmise that what she probably means is "racist". Apparently racist speech isn't protected speech in this town.
Which is real convenient considering the left libs, Democrats and the like have gone to great lengths to broaden the definition of the term "racist" to include all speech that opposes, undermines, or criticizes their very particular political agenda or the proponents of that political agenda. So in the end, what she's saying (and what many political actors say these days) is that speech that gets in the way of her political goals is not permitted.
You know, back in the early-mid 20th century when there were communist conspirators operating in the US under the direction of the Soviets; they would explicitly teach this rhetorical tactic to one another. You can read about it in their own documents - they'd explain that because their cause is just and because all means are justified by the end that is socialist eutopia, it was necessary to do whatever possible to suppress their opposition. One of their favorite ways to do this was to slander their opponents as racists, and to either lie about or twist whatever their opponents were saying to achieve that. They'd even do it to their own people if one of their people broke discipline and needed to be neutralized. Plenty of communists who broke with the party and testified against them, or even just ended up on the wrong side of a Stalinist purge - would get smeared as racist.
Nowadays it seems like what used to be a deceitful tactic employed by unscrupulous radicals in their revolutionary "praxis" has simply become mainstream in politics.
Something to chew on if you're the type of person to take accusations of racism in the political arena all that seriously. It kinda seems like it's the spiritual successors to the 20th century Marxist Leninists who are in charge now, and they continue to indiscriminantly use the same dirty tricks. Even though they are nowhere near as formidable or cunning as the revolutionary underground operators who cooked these tricks up in the first place.

She had no opponents in this video. The people speaking were the citizens to the city she was elected to be mayor of. She's dealing with courts because she is sueing a fellow council member for assault and attempting to get a restraining order against him.
The people who spoke up about the situation weren't even attacking her, but rather talking up the one she is sueing.
There has been many complaints about the mayor's mannerisms and attitude. From what I understand to have taken place, during the cruise event, the mayor took a turn at the microphone to complain that the cruise made no effort to have a place out for juneteenth celebration since it was on the same day. The mayor was asked if she wanted to be apart of the cruise committee, of which the man she's sueing is the president of on his own personal time, she refused due to the fact she was supposed to be out of town at that time. She didn't go out of town, she showed up to the event uninvited, she went on a rant about juneteenth without permission, said unsavory things about the people there. Curly, the previous mayor, got in her face and yelled at her. From what I understand no violence was performed. MO called the cops on him and filed a report and is now subsequently suing Curly. If anyone is victimized anybody, she is trying to victimize herself.
