Great videos! Just a note, some people breed the larger breeds (giants) because they give more meat per hour spent butchering (for us that are time constrained), or just for pets. Generally the kits take 30% longer to wean on giants, and take a lot out of the mom so we don't breed them right away otherwise we lose the mom. But there's a reason why NZ and CA rabbits are used, as you pointed out, great production.

Wow super interesting
Meat Breed Rabbits like New Zealand and Silver Fox are mostly used because the meat to bone ratio at 16wks is the most cost efficient. Bigger Breeds do eventually make more meat but food cost is more. If you butcher large breed Rabbits at 16 wks you get less meat than you do with Meat Breed Rabbits. Hope that made sense. In the end the cost per pound to produce meat is less with the Meat Breeds, but all Rabbits taste good to me. Keep doing your thing.

North Alabama here. We breed our NZ/Cali vigorously. We have currently 16 doe and 8 bucks. 8-4 that breed together on one side of the barn and 8-4 on the other. Winter we move them inside and keep the barn around 60 degrees and keep breeding. We only breed our does for 2 years then process them after 8 weeks of being in our “Retirement Home” my kiddos call “The Ritz” lol we have between 10-14 almost every litter (of course we have had all the things happen that could happen) we had one doe have 15 twice in a row which freaked me out a little. We breed heavy.

Great advice, but I want to add that in the panhandle of FL ours is flipped on the breeding schedule. We breed starting around August or September, bc it's so darn hot here that the kits die from the heat, and the bucks are pretty sterile.

My does first litter was 10 kits(Satin&California) and her second was 14 kits. (Satin&Silver Fox)
Some kits died each time. Is this TOO big a litter or would this be considered great results with the above average litters?
Dead kits are no good for meat at 8+ weeks or replacement breeders (and decaying kits in the nest are a threat to the other kits). So, no in my book. I prefer a litter that the doe can raise with a 100% succes rate and therefore has enough to give to all kits both during gestation and nursing periods. Bad start impacts the whole development, so possibly slower growth and impact on health and long term fertility if kept for breeding. Although here to most kits will end up in the freezer and i have a range for littersize, (5-7, but dwarf breed for ease of handling, etc.) meat is not a selection criterium for breeding. Healthy animals that are easy to handle and thrive in my care are. Breed standard, etc. are all below this on the list (they are above max. size/weight, but just right for me). Now given my situation and the insights here (EU) i breed 2 litters a year per doe (leave daughters on till next breeding if possible) and that gives me plenty of meat along with some lamb. If i start breeding way more i'll either have to start selling for pets (also reason for picking dwarf breed) or get a pet cat/dog to feed part of this meat to.
Bigger isn't always better, more genetic variety in your breeding stock is usefull, smaller animals that are easier to handle (i'm not getting any younger and want to keep doing this for quite some time yet), and fit stew pot/freezer fine. Also on the "hoof" food storage doesn't need a powersource and damage is way easier to fix than the freezer.

That’s a great question thank you for asking
In my experience breeding your rabbits in the same cage for 30 minutes will prevent your doe from going to the bathroom and flushing the bucks sperm out-four hours later test breed again - this will improve the litter size-if the doe is unwilling or aggressive then remove your buck immediately-and mark the calendar
If she lifts again keep your buck in the cage for 30 more minutes at the most or until she becomes unwilling to breed
Using young does -first 2 to 3 years of their breeding life/cycle will be best for high numbers and getting the most doe’s out of the litters
Im just getting started in to rabbits for meat & hides. I bought 4 bucks & 4 does. A pair of whites a pair of browns to start then a few weeks later I got a cinnamon colored doe & a red brown colored doe. Along with 2 palomino colored bucks. They are all California/ new Zealand crosses.
My plans are to breed two in mid may and 2 in mid june . I live in northern maine. I don't want to over breed my does nor do I want to have kitts in the winter. We live off grid

There are also free rabbit forums you can join (if you are 18 or older) that have lots of info and you can ask other rabbit breeders. Books are nice to but there are options
what advice to you have for breeding 2 does and a buck. do you have an opinion or tips? do you thinks its easier to have more of less does to breed? I'm just trying to figure out a manageable yet successful amount of breeding rabbits.
A great way to start out your production is with 2 doe and a buck. Breed one doe wait a day and on day 2 breed the next doe. You'll have 2 does kindling at the same time and this way you can foster if needed. Also if one doe doesn't have her litter for what ever reason your not waiting another month.
If you process these rabbits maybe sell a few to cover feed cost and think you can handle more. Then give it a whirl. But be careful with jumping into a 2 buck 4 doe production because it can take a lot of time, feed and energy. I don't like to breed my does until they their kits are weaned. I am going to breed early spring (March) through Oct. then no breeding until March again. Lost one whole little from cold this last winter.

You can, but you may want to temporary tattoo if they aren’t a different color,
That way you know which bloodline they come from.
I have one Buck who is a champion line buck. I have multiple does. Can a buck breed to several those on the same day and still be able to conceive on all of them?
I do know that when it gets very warm the males go sterile but I don’t know about this question.
You can and many folks have success
But I find the litters have bigger numbers if I give the bucks a day break between does’s
This keeps their fertility levels at their highest
And only a day break you can still foster kits if needed and the size difference will be close
So every kit still has a fighting chance for a nipple

You should not if you are trying to build your rabbitry....However if it happens just eat the kits at 8-10 weeks old and your fine However those inbreed kits shouldn't be allowed to produce kits there genetics are poor

I am trying to breed my female New Zealand, the age is ok but each time I put the female in the male cage she doing a small noise . the male try often but the female seem not to be full cooperative. They do not fight, go well together, but my results are not good. Try more then 3 days or 4 days consecutive but...

If the female makes noises and stays away from the male or makes noises at the male who then calms down she isn't ready and telling the male they aren't getting any. First are they healthy not too fat? How much light are they getting 11+hrs straight? Are you breeding early or late in the day....sun up and sun set tends to go better than mid day. Good weather also is better than bad weather. Are you making sure they get enough vitamin K and E? Spinch is naturally full of the good stuff and a large pinch with is all they need for a week straight giving once a day. Lastly are you sure they are different sex? Not 2 boys or 2 girls.....mix ups do happen.

What age should I breed my rabbits? My buck is 6 months and my 2 does are 4 months.
All of them are pure bred mini Rex rabbits tri colored male, harlequin female, and lilac female.
It’ll make things easier that your buck is older -wait until at least 5 months for the doe’s. 6 months is even better.
Breed one doe and then wait a day - then breed the next doe to ensure your bucks fertility. This will make for better size litters.
@@TheRabbitryCenter thank you! The females are sisters and the male is not related. So the male was born feb 12 and the females were april 10. I think I’m gonna breed them around September 20 so the babies will be ready for their new homes around Christmas.

I am new to rabbits, but my doe had babies, I tried rebreeding her once the babies were 2 weeks old and she wont lift. The buck in jumping on and doing his thrusting, but then he stops and gets off before he falls off or she moves before he falls of and completes. I thought maybe I was doing it too early, but I just watched your video and you said, breed after two weeks, so I don't know what's the problem
Pay attention to doe’s vent
- make sure you’re introducing the doe when the rabbits red and swollen
3-4 weeks after she kindles is ideal.
Look every week that way you can observe the change gray, pink, red, purple, reset

how long before you change your Doe if you do that 10 wks intense breeding?
You'll know when it's time to retire your rabbit because the litter numbers will drop down to 4-5 rabbits sometimes less. Usually takes 2-3 years for a doe's productivity to drop
@@TheRabbitryCenter Your breeeding method is interesting. I am quite new in rabbitry but in the Philippines, they always said that you must rest your Doe before mating again. what they do is 30 days gestation, 30 days kindling and 15-25 days rest before mating again.

It's when your litter of bunnies are ready to leave their mother and start eating and drinking on their own.
I know someone who breeds the next day after giving birth. He said it´s the best time as after that she won´t want to for a while. How bad is this for her? Is this how it occurs in nature? Does this reduce her lifetime?
well he'd have to wean at 4 weeks due to the new litters arrival but this won't hurt the kits. In nature a rabbit will abandon a litter at 4 weeks. That's why a lot of people start finding those little bunnies around in may and june. They are on their own now and kinda confused how to feed and what a where to go.
Rabbits in the wild are usually bred within a day or two from kindling. If you breed a rabbit like this you'll get high numbers for about 2 years and then the litter numbers will go down. She'll live but just not have big numbers for long stretches.
Ive had a lot of luck breeding my does at 4 weeks when she still has her kits in the cage with her. Remove her breed her in the bucks cage and return her to her kits for two more weeks.

Do people have to keep breeding rabbits outdoors? I have a female lionhead and want her to be a free roam indoor rabbit but I don’t know if that means I have to spay her or if I can keep her unspayed and have a litter from her? Any info would be nice on this. It seems people don’t keep unfixed rabbits indoors but I wasn’t sure if that’s true. thanks
Hey, people use Sheds or barns. Why not? Iv'e never bred rabbits indoors but I'd recommend keeping them either in or out and not mixing it up. Rapid change will shock a rabbits climate calibration system and they could die from stress. But climate controlled indoors seems like a safe bet. It just might take a little more cleaning. Good Luck!
I've never kept rabbits indoors and I wouldn't want to give you advice on something I'm not experienced in. But If were to try it,
you said your rabbits roams then its safe to assume it has a litter box or food and water area. I'd try placing a Big T.V. size box 3'x4' x 6"-8" tall in a quiet place. Maybe even entertain moving food and water near the future kindle site. I'd put some hay in the box. Just a couple inches. I'd Place a nest box within that box and maybe you'll get lucky. Give it a whirl. If it goes Good or bad, its still experience and you'd only get better next time. Worse case scenario she'd probably kindle in your closet and may have a placenta stain to clean up. I freeze them until I'm ready to work them.

Explosive Mind Gamer- I try my best to keep up but if I take a day off they really stack up. But it's a good problem to have. By the way noises drive me crazy and it really bums me out when I launch a video and notice the audio isn't perfect or the volumes are all jacked up and different. This is one of my pet peeves. This video is one of nails down a chalk board type video for me when I re watch it. I really make an effort to create a smooth transition from clip to clip so thanks for being patient and commenting. @@leoscape_ls6141 if they’re under three months old then they are not sexually mature and won’t conceive but if they’re older than that then Yes, absolutely can and probably will be pregnant after one fall off but the litter would most likely be smaller than if you had multiple fall offs.

Yes but I'd separate towards the latter part of gestation because they will want Their own area to raise their litter.
Great channel. Lots in common. I have 9 does. I like to breed 2 at a time. And pace where I have 2 litters every 2 weeks. I average 4 litters per doe a year. I wean at 6 weeks and rebreed right away if I have room. I wish I had 2 cages per doe. I would have that but I keep buying rabbits or keeping growouts to replace mom and then sent replace. Haha rabbit math.

Do you use the rabbit to feed your dogs? If so, how do you go about it? I'm just getting into rabbits and need to get to breeding them but really want to do my research before I start feeding my pups rabbit to supplement their current feed to help reduce my feed bill.
@@rockscorner5991 I do feed my puppy rabbit. My dog gets any of the kits that die. I freeze them it more then 1 or 2 kits died. I also feed any of the rabbit that we do not eat (cooked). Dog get the organs and anything we do not eat. I plan to dry the rabbit ears as a treat. You will need a higher fat content meat to supplement with the rabbits. A dog can not survive on just rabbit.
@@BranscumFarm - so, when you feed cooked rabbit do you also give the cooked bones? I've researched that's not safe as cooked bone (rabbit or chicken) will actually splinter and cause digestive issues.
Also, do you feed in ounces? Sorry, I've only ever fed kibble and REALLY want to start feeding a more natural way.
I completely understand about feeding them more then rabbit. We've got goats on the way and always get a steer and hog every year also. In addition, we're friends with a butcher who is about an hour away who will gladly give anything he's dispensing with for the pups. Glad to have him on board. 😃❤
@@rockscorner5991 I dont feed the bones if the rabbit was cooked. Just the small scrap meat we don't use. If I feed a rabbit whole raw then the dog gets the bones. I do worry because the bones are so small and my dog is only about 3 months old. So far she enjoys them and I have not had any issues with feeding quarters of the rabbit raw. I dont feed the small rib bones. But my dog most gets table scraps. And any dead kits.
I bred my doe 3 weeks ago and now she is being super aggressive towards me and the male as they can see each other through bars is this a big sign

Did you bring the buck to the does cage. Does are very territorial when it comes to their cage. Always take the Doe to the bucks cage.
If you did bring the doe to the bucks cage, Is there any chance that she could already be pregnant.
Do you have any experience with unexpected early breeding? How many kits did the youngsters have compared with adult females?
Depends on your rabbit. She may have a good litter and nurse them like a pro and everything will be fine. But she may have a few out of the nest box and lose some. I always try to prepare myself for the worse case scenario. My does usually kindle in the middle of the night and I notice the litter in the morning.
So what happens when rabbits are bred too early?
Even though rabbits are capable of having litters before 6 months it sometimes take longer to grow out to their full potential. Sometimes the result of early pregnancies is they don't ever reach their full potential size. Some folks claim that they start their does earlier in order to get better litter numbers the following litter. Regardless if you start early or not the litter numbers will start around 2-5. The litter numbers will increase with every litter there after.
Just keep her on a healthy diet and don't try to over feed her in order to feed her freakishly hungry needs. She's going to be a cage door stalker when it's feeding time. Good luck with your litter.
Hey. My female bunny gave birth to 5 babies and they all froze to death. I gave her a 3 day break and started breeding her. She would not lift. Is that because she thinks she still pregnant or because she needs to rest?
She wouldn’t need a rest
Rabbits can reproduce every four weeks and wild rabbits are usually pregnant in a day or two after kindling
It’s even possible for a buck to breed a doe between kits being born

Some people breed right after kindling and every 31 days you'd have a new litter. I personally wouldn't do it but some people do.
Yes mam. Some big commercial productions do that as well. Rabbits in the wild will abandon their litter at 4 weeks because they are pregnant with in a day or two of kindling. I wouldn't recommend that either because your litters will benefit greatly staying with mom a little longer. They have a stronger immune systems being able to nurse a couple weeks longer and start eating and drinking water gradually. But by week six mamas milk is dried up and she's 2 weeks pregnant and ready for some alone time.

With a little research you can see that only certain breeds are big medium or small.
Are the ears loppy or stand straight up? This will narrow the search as well. Is the fur long or short is it especially silky soft. Without a rabbit to compare this fur to it may be difficult and you'll have trouble knowing if it's purebred but you can definitely narrow it down to a few breeds. Just spend a little time learning about those breeds that share your rabbits similarities.

My doe gave birth at 30.days both times that she gave birth to her babies.
Some rabbits can give birth a little early. That's why it's always a good idea to introduce the nesting box as early as day 29. You can most likely expect this to happen again with this doe but could see a change with a different buck. Please keep me posted.
