  • In a recent operation, the Lagos State Task Force apprehended eight suspects involved in selling contaminated turkey originally seized by the Nigeria Customs Service. The raid, conducted in Epe, uncovered cartons of turkey previously deemed unfit for consumption and disposed of at a designated dumpsite. Despite these precautions, the turkey found its way into the hands of unscrupulous individuals attempting to sell it to the public.
According to Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, spokesperson for the agency, the operation was initiated based on tip-offs from Rasheed Shabi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and Oba Kamorudeen Animashaun, the Oloja of Epe. Task Force officials swiftly responded, raiding shanties near the dumpsite where they apprehended the suspects along with some of the contaminated turkey and various harmful weapons.
Oba Kamorudeen praised the Task Force's prompt action, highlighting the potential health risks posed by the contaminated turkey, particularly amidst ongoing efforts to contain a cholera outbreak in parts of Lagos. He emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents from exacerbating existing public health challenges.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Task Force, emphasized the dangers associated with consuming condemned goods, noting that they can lead to serious health issues such as cancer and liver disease. He reiterated the agency's commitment to protecting Lagosians from such risks, emphasizing that all confiscated contaminated goods were safely secured at their headquarters.
The arrested suspects are expected to face charges in court, underscoring the Task Force's determination to uphold food safety standards and safeguard public health in Lagos State.
