PinePhone Plasma Convergence Edition Unboxing and First Impressions

- Pine64 and the KDE community have collaborated to create a phone, which comes in two different versions. The Pine64 Plasma Edition PinePhone, either with or without the convergence pack. This is my unboxing and first impressions of the convergence kit equipped one, and I hope you agree with me that this is an exciting piece of kit.
If it seems like i've skipped something important to you, that's just because it's perhaps not quite so important to me (yes, i know, you want to run android apps - that's not what i'm here for, but i'm told there's resources available for that sort of thing).
Spoiler alert: i'm excited about this thing, and based on what i've seen here, i'm pretty sure there's a lot of shiny stuff ahead for Linux on phones. Taken us a while, but this? Yeah, it feels pretty good.

As of Wednesday the 24th of March, Pine64 have posted that they're now open for preorders of the beta edition of the Pine Phone, which ships with Plasma Mobile on Manjaro, which is also what this video is about (though in a very early version) :) / 1374573894737272832

Thank you very much! Glad i'm not the only excited person here :D This one runs Manjaro, and Mobian will have its own little quirks, the same way they all do - but that aside, yeah, this genuinely feels like a glimpse of the future :)

Thank you! Think it came out fairly decent, yeah :) Need more practice with this stuff, and especially i need to not forget that proxy clips are a thing... working with 4k50 footage is kind of hard work, even on a reasonably beefy machine ;)
*giggles* i've no doubt that you will hate the answer "facebook marketplace" ;) But, more seriously, it's a fairly generic waxed solid oak table and chair set - it's a lot less chunky than it seems, the tabletop itself is just about a cm thick (i think you can just about see that on the side in the bit where i'm on the sofa), but it's still nice and solid even then :) The bench i'm sat on for the unboxing bit, which you can just barely see in that photo at the start, though, that's the real star - a bespoke solid wood bench made from chunky pine, and also waxed, which fits precisely between the legs of the table, so it can be pushed all the way against the wall... but, yeah, really quite happy with that set :D

i mean, i could do that (and have done so now, thanks for the reminder - even if i'm not a dude), but also it isn't going to help much, as we're past the end of the community editions, but also not yet at the time where they're selling the release version :)
Mine crashes every 2-5 seconds to the lock screen. I refreshed the mirrors and updated to the stable release but no change. Wondering if mine has a software or hardware issues
What Linux distro runs fastest on PinePhone BETA? Arch BareBones? Ubuntu Touch? or..............?

Does it have apps like Viber Signal or Telegram ?
i can't comment on Viber (at least not on the manjaro edition where i looked), but according to the search in Discover, Signal's there, as is Telegram (which incidentally is even installed by default, i think you can see me scrolling past it in the video) :)
How did that convergence package end up working out. I just watched a video of another guy's just falling out of the usb c port and not working.
The dock works really quite well - seems to stick pretty sturdily in the port as well (as well as doing that whole power delivery, networking, keyboard/mouse type stuff quite nicely). Not sure who the other video is, but it'd probably be worth them getting in touch with Pine64's support, they're pretty responsive to things like that, which... yeah, are clearly not as intended :)
The whole "display doesn't work" thing is just my particular one being super weird, it turns out (it's one of those super cheap 4K/30hz touch things with extra-wonky edid that may or may not be correct depending on the direction of the wind and the phase of the moon), but being one of those weirdos who just uses a laptop for everything, it's the only display i've got to test with :D
@@leinirtoo Alright, cool. Mine was supposed to be delivered yesterday, but got delayed due to weather. It was just some random unboxing of the KDE community edition. Maybe he just got unlucky, but when I saw you having troubles as well... You know.
