My tiger barb tank is probably my favorite. They are so crazy and energetic and hardy. They like to lock lips and circle each other sometimes like 'sparring' but it'd harmless. Awesome choice!
Tiger Barbs hold a special place in my heart. I had a species only with all different types of Barbs. Such a fun tank. There are some beautiful Barbs in the hobby. You should enjoy their personalities.
I would recommend a cover for the top of the tank because they often jump out when they have the opportunity. But it looks great this is exactly my dream tank.
Tiger barbs were one of my first fish. Along with swordtails and dwarf gouramis, neither of which they ever picked on. I loved them. Would like to have them again.
Hey MD, just wondering - when you drain the tank down and pull all the decor and that substrate bag out, would that not release spikes of ammonia and other nasties , for the fish that are chilling in the bottom inch or so of water? I guess they’re not in there for long, but still.. 🤷🏻♂️
I honestly don't think there are any nasties at all. The course gravel allows flow through the whole layer. The reason I say this is because there is absolutely zero bad smell. And the fish were all good too. They are for sale at maidenhead taunton now....unless someone has already got them.
I don't think he let's his tanks set long enough for the substrate to grow mulm. Plus he sets up all of his tanks with power head-ish water movement. That would happen more if he had only sponge filters for filtration.
@@MDFishTanks yes this is 100% a great thing about layering and aqua soil. Water flows through it and the plant roots supply oxygen to the substrate system so no anoxic areas! Plus love that you layer substrates as it creates so much biological filtration.
I've done the media bag routine with my most recent setups, and I love it! So easy to use, and if I have to move plants, no worries about mixing up the substrate and making a mess. Thanks for the tip on that!
I liked at the end that you did a nice commentary about the tiger barbs instead of just showing b roll. It’s an addition I would like to stay so I have more time listening to your beautiful voice!!!

Sponge filters, root tabs, larger tanks with more plants and gentle stocking, and API's different tank startup chems like quick start and essentials. Also, gorgeous aquarium build man :D
I while back ago, I did Tiger Barbs in a 75G, loved them. Had 30, along with 5 Silver Dollars, and cory cats. My plants did not survive the silver dollars, lol. Wiped them all out. But the Barbs are wonderful.
Hello MD, very happy to see you've gotten tiger barbs. I've been attracted to them since I was young and I've been debating on getting a school of them for my new 60 gallon tank. Seeing this video just helped me reach my decision. :)
My tiger Barbs are 2inch long plus, and nearly as big depth wise. They do get quite big but Ive had no problems with them and they haven't bothered my plants at all. Lovely fish to keep
I never had any luck with Tiger Barbs on planted tank, in my experience they behave similar like my Buenos Aires, pretty naughty especially to my Dwarf Sagittaria carpets. I know some individual fish could have a different personality than the others who kept them. I gotta keep them fed enough with high grade pellets, frozen tubifex, and some spinach and floating frogbits (which they really like) to reduce their lawn-mowing behavior on my bottom plants
Regarding dying bacteria in your canister filter when turning the power off, this process starts after 30 min! If you leave it off for a whole day, all will be dead. If you then turn it on again, you will put all this dead bacteria in your water column, hence the white murkiness.
My betta buddy passed away recently. I am wondering if you might guess the plants or sponge filters would be okay as far as bacteria or whatever from what caused my fish dying? I rinsed off the sponge filters and sprayed the plants and sponges with hydrogen peroxide...so hopefully won't have to toss all of it.
Wow i love that scape! Its a very light scape with many gaps but the plants just give the tank such a big sort of character and that works amazing with the tigerbarbs! Very good job keep going!🔥🔥
I was inspired by all the great videos on this wonderful channel and wanted to try my hand at a new tank build. Imagine my surprise when I realized a couple dots of glue didn’t keep my brand new driftwood down 😅 took me days to figure it out!
Tiger Barbs were the first fish I kept. They were in a group of 6 or so. Later I got a handful of tetras and loaches. Everyone played nicely together. The barbs would eat out of my hand and always welcome me at the front of the tank. In hindsight, I probably over fed them because of it. Might have kept the peace as well. Maybe? Either way... They are fun fish.
I think it's good that you show your aqua soil bags. You may have new viewers. Can't wait to see what you do with this tank. I know it will be awesome!!
Hi md. Tiger barbs are really cool fishes to have . I am having them for more than two years now. They school well and once you put your hands inside they come and start touching you.
Wow thanks! I'm getting into my first aquascape tank and my second go at planted and this video was helpful - right down to the Tiger barbs which is what I want to keep in it!
I basically left my 29 gallon go after I had some bad luck and lost everything in it save a SAE and a Synodontis catfish. It was an algae covered mess for many months that I just did my best to ignore. Fast forward to this year where I've upgraded to a Fluval 307, bought some new plants, and bought a school of 12 of these beautiful barbs. I went with 4 albino, 4 green, and 4 striped and it doesn't seem to affect their shoaling behavior so maybe they determine con-specifics based on silhouette shape or pheromones. I occasionally turn the filter flow to maximum as I've noticed they love swimming in the high current from time to time which brings me great joy.
Hi MD. I absolutely love tiger barbs and find them so interesting and full of character. Just a quick note on my experience with them however... I know different fish will behave differently in different situations and with different tank mates, but I tried to keep them in my 6 ft heavily planted tank with mostly tetras, corydoras and amano shrimp etc. They didn't do any damage to the plants at all, but did really harass the 11 columbian tetras (I thought they would have been fine!), to the point of tearing off tails and fins. They picked on the corydoras to and made it so they hid most of the time. All the small tetras were absolutely fine and the amano shrimps (that I was most worried about) were not even given a second glance. I had only 6 and grew them up to a decent size at which point I had to rehome as just causing too much stress to columbians and corys. Gutted really as their behaviour, colours and the way they mover together was awesome! Just my experience... keep up the amazing work, love your channel!
Not trying to be daft mate, but could that aggressive behaviour be due to the small group size ? Matt did say that the larger the group the more they’ll pick on each other rather than other fish
@@sigspearthumb9574 possibly, but I actually started with a group of 12 and all they did was split up into groups of 4 and went after the columbians in their groups. Funnily enough the behaviour, or indeed the damage to the columbians improved when I reduced to 6. Don't get me wrong, love the tiger barbs but they do need to ne carefully considered. I wish I could have kept them.
@@ronburgundy3719 My experience as well. They break off into smaller groups. But for me their attacks are always constrained to each other. They leave my tetras, cories, gouramis, and angel alone. If I could catch them out of the tank I would rehome them, but they are lighting quick.
Glad you got some Tiger Barbs. My absolute favourite fish and they get an overly bad reputation. As long as you keep them right and feed them right you'll be rewarded with some awesome fish. Nerites can definitely turn themselves over btw.
Sometimes they can. In general I think it’s just way safer to keep them right way round since it’s not a lot of effort and occasionally they won’t be able to.
Just beautiful... Watching the tank come together with substrate, sand/rocks, wood, plants, moss is stunning and very therapeutic.. Once the fish and other animals arrive.....WOW!!!.... I can't take my eyes off the tank. The part of the video that was the second day and the fish's colours had popped, I went back to see the colours when you first put them in to see the difference. It looked like you had enhanced the colour on your camera somehow but it was just the dish settling in to their new environment... Love love these fish.. so pretty and cute to watch in their little gang. Great tank set up again... Would love this tank as a screen saver. You could take a HD picture of your tank set up, enlarge and laminate it and sell them as backgrounds for people to use behind their fish tanks. 😳😳😘❤️❤️❤️I'd definitely buy one.
Just beautiful as usuals! I just finished my very first aquascaped planted tank today. Inspired by you. I have rosy barbs ❤️ why don’t you boil your wood?❤️🇦🇺
Another beautiful scape MD! That fungus is annoying but I was amazing at my four ottos how quick they got rid of it on my spider wood! I’ve never thought about keeping tiger barbs until now 🤔 keep up the amazing content!
Your tanks are amazing 😍😍 I love your videos I wish I could get my tank as clear as yours 🥺 I've done everything you do but still it's cloudy 😭 I've used internal filters, sponge, now canister, frequent water changes nothing seems to work siigghhh one day it will be clear again 🙏 love your videos and the tiger barbs are 👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks for making this kind of video's. You aquascaping is very beautiful. Do you also have tanks with black sand? So not can you please make one? I want some inspiration for my betta fish tank. Lots of love from the Netherlands.
Hey MD, just wondering why you changed up how you place your root tabs? Didn’t you use to grind them up into a dust and then spread it out before laying gravel? Why did you stop using that method?
Another great creation. However, the last piece of wood that you added, when you got the fish, I would have put the other end up. It didn't have a flat end. Just a thought. 😊❤🙏🇦🇺🐨
I just did my second tank last weekend and used that mopani wood and, despite soaking it in hot, near boiling water for over 24 hours with what I saw recommended on another YT channel to adding some bleach into the hot water (and of course rinsing it well afterwards) I still got the semi-transparent bloom stuff and it does seem more prevalent on the lighter wood. I even got it on some spider wood, specially on a end that looked too chunky for my liking that I chopped back with sterilised secateurs. I suspect it is something in the remaining sap of these pieces. I shall indeed siphon it off as best I can though another YT channel also suggested a syringe with some diluted hydrogen peroxide and squirt it carefully on the wood with the bloom but I am very worried it could kill the little cloud minnows I have in the tank, so i shall avoid that 'cure' for now. Another great video and aquascape that gives me more ideas. I am coming to the realisation that having aquarium tanks is like having a tattoo - once you have one, you want to another. Is there a cure for this addiction (she asks the man with is it 49 tanks and rising) ;) ?
i dont think peroxide will help. youre right about it being sap, though it only happens with 'new' wood. once they become seasoned the sap will go away
Have you seen the Aquarium Domain channel? He just did a double build with huge tanks. (600 and 750 gallon builds) one of those has all kinds of Tiger Barbs and other fish together and it's planted with all thick leaf plants. Looks so natural though.
Wauuu beautiful setup ♥️ very interesting way you did the presentation of the fish, lots of good information - im never been interested in barbs, nov I am 😄 think they really is looking their best in the type of setup you did ♥️
I got to say, I loved watching this video and learning about how to create a lively and realistic aquatic ecosystem. I am fairly new to the world of fish and I was looking at buying maybe a 5 gallon tank with preferrably 2-3 kinds fish low maintenance small fish with a bottom feeder to help keep the tank clean. I know that this may be unrealistic for a beginner, but since I work a lot and always wanted a pet, I think that this is a great option for me. Do you have any videos for building a set-up for $500?

Funnily enough the behaviour, or indeed the damage to the columbians improved when I reduced to 6. Don't get me wrong, love the tiger barbs but they do need to ne carefully considered. I wish I could have kept them.
@@ronburgundy3719 fair enough
@@ronburgundy3719 My experience as well. They break off into smaller groups. But for me their attacks are always constrained to each other. They leave my tetras, cories, gouramis, and angel alone. If I could catch them out of the tank I would rehome them, but they are lighting quick.
The soil bags seems like a great idea... I use pots but some people online don't like the pots.
So Helpful and Beautifully Scaped. I'm using bags from now on. God's Blessings to you and your family. Enjoy Your Weekend 😎
Store building with matt is a great idea!!!
Good morning everyone. It’s 5 am here in Houston TX. Love your videos.
Hi! You inspired me to start a small online fish business! I have 16 personal tanks and all of them are inspired by you!
Another great tank my friend. Loved the shot where all the tigers swam through the archway. Cheers MD.
Wow, I really love that woods coloring. Great setup.
Those are amazing fish really good too just see them and they make my stress go away
We can avoid the gooey fungus by soaking the wood in hot water for sometime. Works for me everytime🤘🏼
I love tiger barbs and yours are stunning. Nicely done MD!
I love that instead of "toot my own horn" he said blow my own trumpet 😂 great build video I love that wood its so cool!
That's how we all say it in England.
Many fish will munch on that slime, especially bottom feeders. My corydoras and loaches love it.
Most underrated fish
can't wait for the store build, hope it's awesome
Such a beautiful tiger barb tank, very informative video, thanks for sharing
That snail went on a mission when you cleared the water on time-lapse 🤣
I had Green Tiger Barbs as a youth, lovely fish. Kept nibbling the hairs on my arms every time I changed water
Thanks, I always take inspiration from your hardscapes 👍🏻
Always wanted to try a tiger barb biotope...thanks for sharing your ideas
You inspire me sooo much 🙏
I have mopani pieces almost identical to yours!! Crap. Now I have to go get another tank and some tiger barbs 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ this was a sick scape!
Beautiful tank set up
Just beautiful as usuals! I just finished my very first aquascaped planted tank today. Inspired by you. I have rosy barbs ❤️ why don’t you boil your wood?❤️🇦🇺
Absolutely beautiful
Mopani wood when first used always produces it, but only once and the fish LOVE it.
Another excellent tank. 👌
Hey MD. Mopanie wood is super fence so it should not ever float, but it would leach a lot of tannins and would only use glue if it was unstable.
beautiful scape as always
Another beautiful scape MD! That fungus is annoying but I was amazing at my four ottos how quick they got rid of it on my spider wood! I’ve never thought about keeping tiger barbs until now 🤔 keep up the amazing content!
Snails in my experience have no issues flipping themselves over, takes them some time but they get there.
I've heard many times about Nerites not being able to right themselves. But you can't watch them all the time.
Just stunning. Luv the videos. Keep up the great work my friend👍🏻👍🏻😃😃
Your tanks are amazing 😍😍 I love your videos I wish I could get my tank as clear as yours 🥺 I've done everything you do but still it's cloudy 😭 I've used internal filters, sponge, now canister, frequent water changes nothing seems to work siigghhh one day it will be clear again 🙏 love your videos and the tiger barbs are 👌👌👌👌👌
MD is the best
Thanks for making this kind of video's. You aquascaping is very beautiful. Do you also have tanks with black sand? So not can you please make one? I want some inspiration for my betta fish tank.
Lots of love from the Netherlands.
Love your idea....gonna take note for my new project😎
Hey MD, just wondering why you changed up how you place your root tabs? Didn’t you use to grind them up into a dust and then spread it out before laying gravel? Why did you stop using that method?
He wants em to release less nutrient over a long period of time
Wouldn't the chlorine kill the beneficial bacteria in the tank? The water was added, then the dechlor. Isn't that too late? Beautiful tank!
Another great creation. However, the last piece of wood that you added, when you got the fish, I would have put the other end up. It didn't have a flat end. Just a thought. 😊❤🙏🇦🇺🐨
maybe the point on the other end made it easier to shove into the substrate.
Yeah MD what about a nice school of Odessa barbs they look amazing
Like skii said, it's indeed the sap.
Mollies love them afaik
For ur kind information we saw a glimse of this in ur last video 😃
I think you need more API products in the background :)
Have you seen the Aquarium Domain channel? He just did a double build with huge tanks. (600 and 750 gallon builds) one of those has all kinds of Tiger Barbs and other fish together and it's planted with all thick leaf plants. Looks so natural though.
Tus vídeos son francamente inspiradores, eres un genio del acuarismo
Beautiful video Informative ❤️😊🐟
1:00 was there a fish in that water.....
Thanks for this video. Informative 👍 and gorgeous looking ❗️
Pretty sure MD keeps that Aquatics centre in business 🤣
Wauuu beautiful setup ♥️ very interesting way you did the presentation of the fish, lots of good information - im never been interested in barbs, nov I am 😄 think they really is looking their best in the type of setup you did ♥️
18:55 that layer of fungus is actually one of the shrimp's favorite food.
Great work Bro 😀 . Man sees the devotion to this hobby with you and I find the pelvis with the Betta the hammer 👍
