The secretary calling on the radio owned that house in real life. One of the 'blind mice' was the dentist of one of the other actors. The 'apartment' that JB kills 'the professor' in was the suite that Mr. & Mrs. Broccoli were staying in while the film was being shot. Dr. No was shot on a very limited budget, thus the 'hey, do you wanna be in a movie?' kind of casting and locations.
@@brezzendorf Yes, that is what I understand, although I don't know if it was year-round or just seasonal which also was common. Noel Coward and lots of other posh types lived on that island for at least part of the year during those decades.
Terence Young's Bond films are the most stylish ones; he is the master director when it comes to Bond, combining savoir vivre and Hitchcockian chamber play qualities - a perfect match for Ian Fleming's fantasy crimes. This clip here shows a serious, grown-up, suspenseful and gratifyingly true-to-the-book opening sequence to my favourite Bond film - and actually my favourite film in general.
More than that, it was because of Terence Young that an otherwise rough-around-the-edges Connery exuded a sense of style, sophistication and panache. Young had to instruct him on literally EVERYTHING having to do with how a gentleman agent melds with polite society.
The attention to narrative detail is very satisfying as well. For example, the regular radio transmission has been interrupted with the carrier signal still live. This small but significant irregularity allows a tone of disciplined urgency to develop. By now we are becoming primed to believe that the response will be a competent one. And that it will ultimately succeed, despite a few bumps along the way. There is a kind of social contract in traditional storytelling. The setup must be impeccable, and it must be seen to be impeccable. After that, we can tolerate a little elasticity with the plot.
Never commented on (including in any book on the 007 films) but the build-up to Sean's entrance is brilliant: we're introduced to so many guys- Strangways, the signals men, the courier seeking Bond at the club- before we finally see him... and his visual impact and ballsy presence immediately set him apart from all those who preceded.

It's weird though that the killers would be hanging around for all that time. Must be more than a week between the murder and Bond arriving on the scene, LOL.
Technically, GoldenEye introduced the world to Bond. It's also the name of Ian Fleming's estate in Jamaica where he wrote Casino Royale, the first Bond novel.
My Father had an old WW II ham radio. That thing kept my brother and I busy for long periods of time,, it was a blast. When we were 4,5,6 we were sure that that ham radio was picking up UFOs.
Those older style amateur radio sets are great. Switch on the receiver and wait a minute while the tube filaments warm up, and then you hear the static. The light from the tubes coming through the perforated case was enough to read by. :)
That would have been extremely unusual back then. Videotape was still a pretty new technology and film cameras would be useless in that role. And things like sound-activated or motion-sensing alarms didn't exist at all.
one of the classic movies of all time. If that was Jamaica it was still during the British rule and you see the Old government house with the porters in the gentlemen playing cards with whiskey in hand. Scholars, businessmen and.. daytime activities!
in 1962 America was secretly building the SR-71 Blackbird at the Skunkworks and testing it at Area 51, making this 'high tech' scene in the movie technology obsolete.
Other than the corny and cartoony sounding music cue (the first piece of dramatic underscore of the franchise) the scene plays exceedingly well, owing to Terence Young’s masterful direction…it’s like what one would visualize when reading the Fleming novel. The cue must be Monty Norman’s but it actually seems worse than even his limited talent would normally muster.

And wasn't the Sunbeam Alpine a resident's car they borrowed for filming?
i had read that the house with the radio was actually ian flemmings house where he wrote the books
In the book. Strangeway was a friend of bond during the war. And saved his life. Bond took it personal that he was killed by a bunch of thugs.
And in an earlier book they worked together on another case and in a later one used his car.
