  • The CAVE DIVING Disaster of Kent Hirsch + Michael Nast | Scary Fascinating
December 9th 2004 was supposed to be a normal day in the Cenotes of Tulum, Mexico, an underwater cavern about 80 miles south of Cancun. A 9 person group was gearing up to dive this legendary dive site. Planning on splitting into two groups, one with 4 less experienced divers accompanied by a guide and a group of 4 who were much more experienced divers. This is the story of a tragedy at the Grand Cenote.
The Mexican newspaper Por Esto! Reported that the Thursday morning of December 9th 2004, started like any other diving day for the pair. Both divers went through their usual meticulous diving preparations and precautions and were at the cenotes by midmorning. Previous diving partners recall Hirsch being oddly paranoid during these checks in an over-precocious manner that always brought a sense of safety to their dives. Making sure others slowly checked his gear and as he did of theirs Hirsch mentioned on several occasions that mediocrity was never an option. Making sure they were diving with certified cave divers when all 9 divers went over the dive plan at the Grand Cenote entrance they were confident that safety was a priority and that the dive was going to be uneventful.
Tune in hear the rest of the story and to see how it all unfolded.
Yes I reuploaded just to fix the audio. Please don't get mad :)

They were basically in a labyrinth, literally any wrong turn meant death. I don't see a way they could have possibly recovered from their situation.

I didn't know this video existed. I stumbled upon it after having visited a cenote nearby a couple of days ago. Kent was my dive instructor, dive buddy, and friend. We had an annual ski trip in Austria. His enthusiasm for life was infectious. He was also very careful and often dove caves in Florida and always asked me if i was interested in becoming cave certified. Seems to me that this is way out of character that he made this mistake. Just doesn't add up for me. His funeral was very emotional. Junior (Kent's son) put together a wonderful slide show celebrating his life. I think about him often and still miss him.

Very appropriate music at the ending. Very good video, too, avoiding repetitions of the same scenes, I think I've watched three videos about this incident, and yours has made the most sense. I don't know if it's me, or if it's the available documentation, or whether it's the narrators, but this seems to be a very confusing incident! Note: "You had to be there" doesn't apply in this case. If you ever feel like doing a re-make, a time-line drawn over the map, showing where each team went (when), might be useful to really understanding what happened. Maps tend to be either a vertical plane, or a horizontal plane, so if depth varies enough to be a factor, both could be used. You did a good job in your description of the sequence of events.

Worth a minor note, those in the vid' were "Line Maps" used by cavers... It can take a little getting used to, even if you DO know "generally" how to read maps, so that's an easy point where they can throw you... I don't know if I'd recommend longer exposures of just the map images... OR if it's better to encourage the audience to pause the vid' to look it over a little closer... so as to NOT piss anyone off because they either know everything already, or because they don't care... haha ;o)
