I basically followed this method of making paper mache/paper clay except I used white glue (Elmer's glue) as my binder. Use plenty of water when blending the newspaper; the pulp absorbs a huge amount of water. I used a cheap standard blender, and it kept overheating. I found that keeping the paper fairly wet worked the best, and was easier to mush away clumps. If you are going to be coating something with it, I recommend first spreading glue on the surface, and then adding the a fairly-wet paper mash pre-mixed liberally with glue. Be aware that it takes a surprisingly long time for this to dry. Even after an afternoon in the Florida sun, it took a couple more days for mine to fully dry and become hard, but mine adhered quite well. In the end, it looks like unfinished concrete.

Do they come out light weight? I want to put the papier-mâché over the cardboard box to make it a little heavier so it doesn’t blow away with the wind.

Then I suggest you tear up the paper into tiny bits and soak it for a couple of hours (2 or more) before you need it so that you can just rob it with your hands.
