Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, "Captured: The Corporate Infiltration Of American Democracy"

  • In Captured, U.S. Senator and former federal prosecutor Sheldon Whitehouse offers an eye-opening take on what corporate influence looks like today from the Senate Floor, adding a first-hand perspective to Jane Mayer's Dark Money.
Americans know something is wrong in their government. Senator Whitehouse combines history, legal scholarship, and personal experiences to provide the first hands-on, comprehensive explanation of what's gone wrong, exposing multiple avenues through which our government has been infiltrated and disabled by corporate powers. Captured reveals an original oversight by the Founders, and shows how and why corporate power has exploited that vulnerability: to strike fear in elected representatives who don't "get right" by threatening million-dollar "dark money" election attacks (a threat more effective and less expensive than the actual attack); to stack the judiciary--even the Supreme Court--in "business-friendly" ways; to "capture" the administrative agencies meant to regulate corporate behavior; to undermine the civil jury, the Constitution's last bastion for ordinary citizens; and to create a corporate "alternate reality" on public health and safety issues like climate change.
Captured shows that in this centuries-long struggle between corporate power and individual liberty, we can and must take our American government back into our own hands.

Senator, I’ve just tuned into you in the last 6 months and after the pandemic isolation. It’s so encouraging to hear you especially about dark money..”so much evil “. Please don’t let anyone take you away from the people as Senator .. you are the only one these days portraying our human values and the dignity that we deserve.

He impresses me with his knowledge of the law. This is one of the most brilliant politicians of all time. I would not want Sen. Whitehouse to be POTUS. He is SCOTUS material. I love watching him during hearings, his arguments are of such depth. It really makes a 60 year old man like me get a better understanding of the law. Democrats are happy to have this legal scholar on their team.
I watched his argument with Gorsuch. I was blown away on how he made Gorsuch look like a rookie talking about "Dark Money". I have become a fan, and I am studying this guy. Two Thumbs Up for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

Oct 2020: we’re in worse shape ever. My kids don’t even want me watch the news anymore because they’re afraid I’ll get severed depression. I’m so heartbroken to see our great country in this current position where we’re so divided over parties and forgot about our country as a whole.

Find or found a group that is active in tackling a few of the world's problems in your neighborhood. Think global, act local.
When I start to feel depression descend upon me I get some exercise and do something. I may still get down, but when I get out in front of the worst of it I believe it is shallower and much shorter.
I find ways to make things better wherever I go. Always asking, "How can I be of greater service?" "How can I lift someone's spirits?" " How can I ease another's burdens?" Taking the focus off how I am feeling now helps. When you help others you are helping yourself.
I do not watch the news everyday. Why? What is there that you HAVE to know everyday? If it is a big news item, I'm sure someone I know will share it with me.
If you're active in a nonprofit or citizens group specializing in a certain area, you will know what's happening before it "gets on the news."

I'm mystified as to why he hasn't been spoken of in this way yet. It needs to happen! He's just 61, not ancient, as with Biden. We need Sheldon Whitehouse in the White House. He's not just competent, he's brilliant, solidly progressive, a man of tremendous integrity, and an excellent public servant.

My heart sank when the audience member hinted at him making a run, and he answered, "Don't bet on it." I can't think of anyone I would rather have as our next president. But, if he's just not into it, then the next Democratic president should make him the Attorney General, because he was a fierce and effective prosecutor for many years before he became a fierce and effective Senator.

The concept of denial vis-a-vis climate change reminds me of an advert I recently came across surfing the net. What I saw harks back to the glossy weekly magazines of the 1950s and to the powerful tobacco industry then and now. The magazine carried a full-page advert taken out by one of the big cigarette brands of the day. The full-page ad depicted a named male doctor, a real MD, white-coated, stethoscope draped around his neck. The good doctor was seated at his desk, cigarette poised between his fingers. The ad's copy carried the message to the people out there that smoking the endorsed brand of cigarettes was beneficial to one's well-being! The mind boggles at this and how the tobacco industry, its lobby and doctors-for-hire sold their souls to the devil in the name of making a deadly fast $buck$. Hovering behind all this, the government of the day turned a blind eye and cocked a muffled ear. A substantial part of the government's annual revenue is derived from the billion-dollar industry and its hoodwinked consumers. Then and now, nothing really changes.

Sheldon Whitehouse once said,"The police have to learn that they're not an occupying force." Yes, yes they are. Wittingly or not they are the street level agents of a police state. The order they keep is an imposed one. We the people never gave consent to this arrangement. The courts are run by the American Bar Association and its state franchises. If we must admit they are presently the defacto owners we make it clear we citizens are its rightful ones and we are here to reclaim them.
The peaceful transition is best achieved through juries. The jury decides all matters civil and criminal according to our established American procedures. That the ABA has refused to is reason enough to bar them from any position in our courts.
Any ABA member who's been disbarred or imprisoned for opposing the rule of that treasonous organization may be considered for reinstatement as an officer of the court; no others. The exception is as pro se. If we did not acknowledge their right to represent themselves we'd repeat one of their crimes against us. Our every right has been turned into a privilege; theirs to grant in full, in part or withhold altogether. That ends now.
It's freely admitted they were once a useful even vital part of our long struggle to establish Rule of Law and Due Process. Historians will chronicle how they became those goals worst enemies. It falls to us to pick up this challenge and see it through. We will surely make many of the same mistakes but if the process is open to inspection we can and will correct them. Securing the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity is the goal. The passion we have for freedom spurs us on and steels our will in the difficult days ahead.

If we had not learned by the time the phrase ; "If it bleeds , it leads" became known,we're not capable of discerning good and evil.
We've become so dependent on the media for our thoughts,we've forgotten how to think deeply.

I believe Justice Kennedy was coerced or enticed into retirement, giving another opening to the Federalist Society to place a young Conservative on the Court, for life.
With Kennedy's coerced removal, Chief Justice Roberts has lost reasonable, moral influence and has become a mere co-signer + obligate, albeit ludicrous, defender of the theocratic corporatocracy.

D.C. & Puerto Rico deserve statehood immediately "if not sooner". It's anathema to our ideal of taxation w representation, to our representative government, that these 2 territories are not fully represented states.
