I started letting my kelpie free run on trails when I couldn't find enough time for proper walks. I'm using a regular no suspension bike for now and it's terrifying trying to keep up with him. :D Getting a full suspension bike soon, partly for me, but mostly for him. :D It's amazing how obedient kelpies are. Mine may stray off to sniff somebody walking by with a dog, but immediately returns for the run when called. I think that's awesome for a dog less than 2 years old. And he is getting more focused on the run every time we go.
    Great video! Cheers from Finland.

Thanks for the comment, my dog is almost 4 now, and we have really enjoyed riding bikes. Getting a good mountainbike is win win, the only problem is the $$. My kelpie is also super responsive which is necessary for riding with her

Hey mate. I have a 12 month old kelpie myself and our house backs onto a whole network of trails in a forest reserve in Tasmania, Australia. Isn’t it fascinating how fast the dog picks up the tricks of being a trail dog. Nala (my dog) loves it and can easily run anywhere up to 15 kilometres a day with ease and be infront of me at all times even doing 50+ kilometres an hour down hills.
She is very driven to follow me but often as we are almost home she is not inclined to go up our driveway unless she is exhausted. Any tips?
She also barks and bites at my wheel occasionally on the rides, often when I’m heading home.
However she’s an amazing companion and absolutely loves the fact she can just run and run and run in the bush without coming across any other people. Really important for high energy dogs!

That’s great Oliver! Nothing better than riding through the bush with your mate. I used a lot of food rewards at the start to keep her on track but once we were on the same page she is super responsive. Just make sure you keep your dog hydrated and try not too over run them.

@@nickwooden2103 yeah absolutely. RE: hydration, there are lots and lots of big puddles and dam’s above my house so we are constantly stopping for water breaks

Am getting a kelpie dog soon and doing lots of research, With training basic commands such as sit do they require treats every time too sit or do they eventually do it on command. I have a beagle also who won’t listen to me and won’t sit unless i have food.

I now don’t bother with treats for my dog. She listens really well. It is in their nature. They require lots of interaction and exercise though.

Yes i am always out and about either bike riding or at the beach, so you introduced the commands with treats but now he doesn’t require treats for commands?

Hey man, I have a kelpie who I ride with sometimes, but only on the sidewalks. I have to keep her leashed to a harness or she'll take off and run.
How did you train off leash? I notice you had her on a leash a bit but then took it off. Mine would be off trail chasing squirrels in a heartbeat!
Sorry to comment on an old video, I searched "kelpie trail dog". :)

Hey, i carry treats in an easy access pocket on my left hip. I encourage her to stay close and come back with that. I also changed the game from chasing rabbits etc to chasing me. I hope that helps mate

@@nickwooden2103 hey thanks for the help! I'll see if I can teach her some skills like that with a leash and see if we can graduate.
I need to find a place that's secure that we can try off leash and see if she'll follow me.
