  • August 2012 University of Leicester Archaeologists unearth beneath a council car park bones that could be those of King Richard III.
Months of historical, archaeological, genealogical and genetic research by Leicester Academics followed and the Skeleton’s identity is confirmed.
The University is the legal guardian of the fragile remains and working in partnership with the Cathedral and the City Council plans are drawn up for another unprecedented event. A week of celebrations with a solemn and dignified ceremony at its heart, the eyes of the world will be on Leicester.
On the morning of Sunday 22nd March 2015 one hundred cameras focus on a simple wooden coffin, no ostentation, no fanfare, just dignity and honour. Short readings from texts religious and secular, white roses for a son of the house of York. One final journey witnessed by thousands in the city, by millions on television and online.
At last a tombstone fit for a king, a place for respects to be paid. From grave to grave King Richard has travelled less than 50 yards, neither the City or the University will ever be the same again.
