Great match. Fantastic to see Lachlan's guard retention system in action. Before he got caught it looked like it was working very well. Gave him multiple opportunities to enter the legs
That’s the thing about guard retention. You can have the best guard retention but the problem is being on bottom. Because maybe the first guard pass won’t go thru but the 5th 6th or 7th will go thru as you just saw. It was only a matter of time before Kade passed his guard.
But he was aggressive, Kade had some close calls but found his way out.... And a think giles got maybe tired or lazy fustrate and Kade is pure caos if you have a fail a hole in your defence he will finish.

I believe Kade notice the arm bar option at 8:06 when Giles had his left arm fully extended. Kade enters back into the same position with Giles but this time the right arm is up and capitalizes there.
I believe the reason Lachlan wasn't able to finish before Kade started fighting the hands was because of the grip he took before the inversion at 6:09.The grip with the bottom arm on the ankle/calf is good but the one with the top arm on the outside of the knee is what I think cost him the match. If you look at 0.25 speed during 6:14-6:15 you can see that before Lachlan could connect his hands he needed to clear it from the bottom of Kade's knee.If the grip at 6:09 was on the inside of Kade's knee instead of the outside he could connect them while in backside 50/50 making the backstep impossible. Play it back at 0.25x speed. You’ll see that there was only one semi-hard contact (and this is a contact sport) to the head as Ruotolo was attempting to secure the top leg over Giles’ head. Everything else was just a fight between Giles shoving off the leg and Ruotolo attempting to replace it.
