    Two things I wish I could ask Ray. 1. Screen visibility outside. My 7300 is horrible outdoors. 2. To save battery can the GPS digital stuff be turned off? I'm cautiously excited with this one. Oh and fliberglass vertical with a wire and 3 radials... 3 minutes and 6 seconds if I break a sweat.

    Thanks Mike for do the interview with Ray! New Icom radio new solar cycle on the horizon what can go wrong? Forgot an adapter for a line or my tent stakes yes I did that once. Force to use my mfj2286 which I still love. It would take me the longest to untangle and layout the ground radials. Very impressive radio and the well thought out menu design. I hope to be able to send a picture over hf lol. Dstar too I don't have dstar. Thank you again. I'm still keeping my IC7200

    Good video Mike! I love the IC-705. If ICOM plans to compete with Elecraft, which they really are, they should have included an on board tuner. And hopefully the receiver is as hot as the Elecraft radios. I looked at that same exact radio Saturday. I was there at HamCation all day Saturday and I am surprised I didn't run in to you. I would have really liked to meet you. I did meet Eric of HRC and a couple of other RUclips creators. I had a blast at HamCation and I am looking forward to next year. 73!

      I was only there Friday. Not sure how the receiver is going to be but I would guess it would be the same as the 7300. Won’t find out until I get one I guess. The tuner is kind of a let down I agree. Not a deal breaker, but I can’t use my PackTenna mini without an external tuner still.

    You know the Icom 7300 is going for under a thousand bucks now. They will shoot this radio in the foot if it comes in more expensive than the 7300. Anyway I've got my reservation in and I'm looking forward to this radio being released.

    remember, $50 or so buys a small manual tuner... yes, I said manual, lol, like the 2 I bring for POTA fun. My autotuner stays home :) For me the deal breaker is the $$ @ ~3xFT891. But then again, am not currently in need of a new rig anyway or I'd have already bought the 891. It IS a VERY nice rig though - so no demerits meant for ICOM.... @@hamradiotube I realise you didn't really get to play with it or anything, but what's your sense of it? Do you think it has a chance of living up to the hype? I think iCOM hit a home run with the IC-7300, and I would love to think that the 705 will be in that league in terms of quality. And the fact that it's all-mode makes it seem like it should be another home run for running QRP. But then, you can also hook up an amp and go higher power for base station use. I can't imagine what's no to like! I know, I sound like I'm already sold on the thing. But I want to believe it could be the rig I've been waiting for all my life! ;-)

    Ok so jump ahead 9 months from now, what will be the defining feature that this gives over other portable QRP radios? Seems there's no insight into how it performs outdoors under sunlight, frost, rain, damp conditions. Is it really a portable radio or a small QRP SDR computer.

      He Carl, thanks for watching. I’ve taken my 7300 portable plenty of times and the screen is fine in the daylight, unlike some of the qrp radios I have. I don’t know of any Hf radio that is resistant to the weather, this one included. For me the defining features are hf/vhf/uhf dstar all in one tiny portable radio. And it has a (kind of) internal battery. I don’t have a radio that does 2 meter ssb either and this will fill that void for me too. Well have to see once it is released out in the wild and we put it through the ringer.

    I would be interested in a in an HF only version with antenna tuner and capable of 100 watts. I would be fine with losing the battery space to achieve the 100 watts goal. Their response to the antenna tuner question is interesting. Why do you want one when you can buy this $400+ antenna instead. Setting it up to sell the radio, antenna, and bag as a grossly overpriced package deal? He had a big gulp in there when you mentioned a price range and avoided the subject. For a product set to release in less then 2 months you would think maybe they would at least hint at a price range. Thanks for the videos.

      Apparently confirmed in UK on Friday as £1199 but it could change - seem to remember a estimate of £800 when it was mid launch. Very nice piece of kit but I also wanted a 9700 at the time but not at £1800. For a hobby that’s suffering membership issues, these prices won’t attract new members. The old 703 will have to keep going a bit longer yet ......

    For you QRP fans out there I see they have released the new icom 705 for about $1,300 dollars. But for about $450 dollars you can get a small lightweight QRP size Xiegu G90 transciever with internal antenna tuner that is so good it could probably tune up a head of lettuce, an antenna analyzer, a water fall, and up to 20 watts. However if you save up all your hard earned money, for and extra $850 more dollars you can actually get an icom 705 with no antenna tuner. ??? uh what did you say $850 dollars more of my hard earned money and NO ANTENNA TUNER. ??

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 года назад

      Yeah but you haven't held the 705 in your hand. It is an amazing radio. You're really not comparing apples to apples though. Icom vs. Xiegu is like Ferrari vs. Kia. Yes, they are both radios, but one is a base grade entry level, with very, very few features other than the waterfall and a great tuner, the other is a high end, fine tuned machine with filters, a way better receiver, the same touch screen as on the 7300 and 9700, all band all mode. I completely understand where you are coming from, but they are not even in the same league. No antenna tuner is not a deal breaker for me at all. My first "portable" radio was the Yaesu FT-891. That doesn't have a tuner. I used resonant antennas. The first of which was a speaker wire dipole cut for 20 meters and it worked great. They will both get you on the air, and that's the most important thing.

    • @docpearson
      @docpearson 4 года назад

      K8MRD RADIO STUFF
      Au contraire I beg to differ with you. Obviously you have not held a Xiegu G90 In your hand. It is pure quality because of the features it has. It has wonderful filters. It also has a CW decoder that is great. Just because that 705 has a flashy look to it does it mean under the hood it has quality like the Xiegu G90. I really like Icom ‘s. My favorite one is the 7300. I was looking forward to the 705 until I found out they took a 7300 and dumbed it down by removing the internal antenna tuner and much less Power and want to charge more money than for a 7300. Just because the crowd wants to go with a little flash I am not like one of the dumb lemmings jumping off the cliff after everybody else. Let me tell you one reason why. I have my small G 90 and I really really like to carry the portable chameleon Cha micro antenna with the 60 foot wire That I can use on bands up to 160 m. But the only way is to use an antenna tuner. If I bought one of those 705’s I would have to go and buy an external antenna tuner to carry two things to do what I do with one right now with one small radio. Otherwise I am stuck to a narrow spot of only having to have a resonant antenna. And I do not want to carry a whole bag of resonant antennas for each and every band. There are a few Antennas with Coils and different things on them to be able to make them resonant. But then I am restricted to only those products. I like the versatility of an antenna tuner and use a lot larger range of Antennas that I might want to use. Not only is the G 90 a first class outstanding quality QRP size Transceiver it is possible to turn it up to 20 W even though it is a small QRP size radio. For 2m I simply have an icom handheld. I have D star On my handheld and also on my icom 7100. but where I am there are no repeaters for D star that I can reach so it’s sort of useless for me right now where I Live. One person did put in a UHF D star repeater but hardly Anyone can reach it from my area. So I don’t have access to it where I am. I have a small go box that I made up. Look at my QRZ page KB5IOC to see it. It has the G 90 with its decoder and its internal antenna tuner where I can reach all bands but in my briefcase size waterproof go box I also have a 2 m connected to a TNC so I can get email even though I do not have access to the Internet by using Winlink. For me the 705 is a day Late and a dollar short of everything that I really need. If it had an internal antenna tuner I might have bought it but to me it’s just a dumbed down 7300 that cost more than the 7300 does. do not discount the G 90 is a fine quality instrument. I do not like to be restricted to have to only use certain antennas. I like to have a higher choice. And I really really like my chameleon cha micro antenna. And I do not want to have to give it up for a 705 that has no internal antenna tuner and it’s just a dumbed down 7300 that cost more.

    10:52 "Wow, just set up and ready to operate." At 5% efficiency, where as if we spend 20-30 mins putting up a proper antenna, you can get all 10w into the air :).
    Loops are great to have in tight spaces, but using them as an argument against having a built in atu is a poor argument. Better just to take your own external atu if you MUST use a non resonant antenna.

    Besides no ATU, (not a huge deal) I don't like the form factor much. It doesn't look like it sets well, needs a stand or something. Secondly I don't think, from what little I could find, it covers the noaa band's which would be nice for portable ops. Lastly touch screen and cold weather or wet weather might be an issue. Just my opinion. Love my 7300 alsoI have the 817 and an x5105 for portable. Still love the 817 best for cw/digi mode. 73 good video de KF7VUT

      Yaesu would make it so overly complicated though. Their menus are terrible. I don't think they really know what it takes to innovate. Look what they did with the FTDX101MP. The 3D scope they put in it looks like it came out of the 80's. It reminds me of Tron. I have 3 of their radios so I can say that. I've heard through the grapevine somewhere around $1200 for the radio. I would guess way more for the whole kit shown in this video.

    Expensive radio... likely worth it for what you get. No tuner? They showcase it with a crazy expensive antenna to compensate? Gah. Great video, but icom needs to find a tuning solution rather than what they are doing here. Xiegu comes to mind...

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 года назад +1

      Yes all band all mode plus D-star is quite compelling. No doubt it will be on the upper side of the price range, but compared to its competition like the KX2/3, you get a lot more radio. The lack of tuner seems to be the hot button for some. Yes it would be nice to be able to use random wire antennas without an external tuner, like my PackTenna mini, but its not a deal breaker for me.

    Icom really had a chance. But what they did was a collosal stupid mistake of epic proportions. What they did
    was just took their icom 7300 and “dumbed it down” by removing the internal
    antenna tuner which is the stupidest thing anybody could’ve done in the world
    just so they could shrink the size of the radio and gave it the new name of
    icom 705. But what they have done is they were close so close to the brass ring
    and could have had one great QRP radio. But Nooo. What they did by removing the
    internal antenna tuner thus dumbing down their radio and thus left the door
    wide open and guess what. Xiegu an upstart new company that wants to go places
    just walks right in With their smaller new G 90 “with” an internal antenna
    tuner and a waterfall and one of the coolest SWR’s That can easily diagnosed
    antenna problems. And the price is a fraction of what icom wants. And walks off
    with the prize and leaves icom eating their dust. Icom had the chance and they
    just dropped the ball and fell flat on their qrp faces. Whoever in their
    company that decided to remove the internal Antenna tuner and everyone that let
    them get away with it was the stupidest move Icome has ever made in their
    history. Icom should be out right ashamed but they are going to pay through the
    nose because Xiegu’s new G 90 is going to walk off with their lunch. Let me add
    an additional note here. Every radio I own is icom.
    I love icom but I have to be honest. Icom has absolutely been hoisted by their own petard by leaving that
    internal antenna tuner out. Opening the door for Xiegu g90 to walk right over
    them.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  4 года назад

      Yes, I agree for the most part. I think its still going to be a way better quality radio. The G90 is good, but it has no filters, no notch, no nothing. It serves it's purpose, and does it well for the price. The only gripe I have w/ the 705 is the lack of a tuner. Other than that, I think it is a great radio.

    • @docpearson

      Actually Ciegu G90 has an outstanding first class Notch filter that is extremely good at cutting out extraneous noise and clearing up the signal.
