  • Lead mining played a major role in Missouri’s history. We visit a shuttered mining operation that is now a state historic site. With the Missouri bicentennial coming up, this may be a place that people want to add to their list to visit.

My grandpa worked for St. Joe lead company, as well as one of my uncles. I am proud that my family is part of this amazing history.

Definitely worth a visit, imho. Very impressive that the company carried their workers through times they they weren't making a profit. They must have had quite some reserves built up. Even so, it's hard to imagine any company doing that these days, given the outsize concern for shareholder returns.

I grew up in St.Louis County and in the mid seventies we rode dirt bikes all around that area there. And even though there were keep out signs on the buildings, Being boys, we went into the old mining buildings and explored. It was kind of creepy, but fun to look around. Times that I will never forget.

Nice video. I am deeply rooted Missourian and my ancestors began mining in the 1700’s and 1800’s. I’m not sure any did in the 1900’s.

This museum looks really cool. Why does Texas have to be so big? I wish I could just pop over for a weekend.

And too, SILVER is a by product of lead mining, at one point in time, MISSOURI was the 5th largest producer of SILVER in the COUNTRY!
