  • This video shows the step-by-step process for making cheap and easy wooden Dice Trays from scratch.
    Thank you for watching! As a thank you for viewing my content please feel free to enter my giveaway! (This thank you goes double to my subscribers. You all make me super happy every single freakin' day!) : (THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU TO THOSE OF YOU WHO PARTICIPATED.)
    These Dice Trays were made using wooden frames from Wal-Mart, wood stain, spray adhesive, graphite paper, felt and a woodburning kit. It costs less than 2 dollars per tray if you break it down by price and what can be re-used over and over. I could easily get dozens of trays out of the stain, as well as with the graphite paper.
    This is a super quick 1-2 day build. Really, the only difficult thing is waiting for the stain to dry, which you can leave out overnight.
    Please wear lung protection and stain your wood outside! I left mine inside and it stunk up the house for days... I do not recommend this.
    If you have any ideas for what you would like to see built in the future, let me know in the comments down below! Then subscribe so you don't miss any new videos coming out in the future! Also, if you liked this, gimme that sweet sweet like.

      In some ways, playing DnD is like taking part in a play. Everyone has their role to play, some get into their roles more than others, but at the end of the day there is absolutely nothing to be intimidated by. As others have said, it is a great deal of fun - theater of the mind as they call it! Hope you get a chance to try it out some day with your son! 8)

    After watching this video, I went to WalMart and picked up a "Paint Your Own Treasure Chest" craft for $3, some felt for under a dollar, and a can of wood stain for $5. I already had a can of spray coating (matte finish) to protect the stain. With those simple ingredients, I was able to make a pretty nice dice box/tray for my wife. So, thank you for the video and the inspiration to make something fun, practical, and pretty darn cool.

    Don' t know if said already but Burn THEN stain. Makes the graphite easier to see. Also, you can make your own graphite paper by simply using a pencil to shade on the back of whatever you are going to transfer. a lot cheaper, but not as fast. Great video! Thanks for the inspiration.

      And for a safety concern, probably burn then stain. I didn't like the way that came out on the test piece I was trying, but I have good ventillation so it wasn't a worry for me. Others Burn THEN stain :)

    Very nice. I made a similar dice tray about a year ago using some wooden boxes/trays from Michael's but picture frames are a great idea. I cut a piece of thin balsa wood, attached the felt to that and slid it down into the tray so the felt is technically removable and replaceable if I ever feel the urge (which I haven't). I also put felt on the bottom of the tray to keep it from scratching/getting scratched on my table.
    I love the wood burning decoration. I've never tried it but always wanted to.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator  5 лет назад

      Oh that's a good idea! I'd love to be able to change the felt color based off of the class I was playing in D&D, or by the theme of the campaign. That's super smart!
      Its mega simple, and you in no way have to have any artistic ability, (which is good for me haha). You should try it sometime! Its a great and cheap skill/hobby to pick up.

    • @danielcomings5872
      @danielcomings5872 5 лет назад +1

      The trick I'm really proud of with the removable tray bottom is a hole I drilled up under the insert so you can poke something through to help get it out (mine fit snuggly enough that you wouldn't know they're removable). It works well with the felt on the bottom of the tray, but probably wouldn't work as well with the decorated bottoms.

    I've made a couple dice trays now and I've used the sticker backed kind.. no mess, no smell, and apparently easier to get into place. JoAnn had a better selection than Michaels when I got mine. I used this nice mottled grey color, goes very well with stone painted things. My campaign mates have been using them for nearly a year with no issues (one I stuck to chipboard and the other to xps foam unpainted)

      Concerning the dimensions for the wooden tray to be used as a dice tray, I found cheap 8 by 10 inch flat artist panes at a local dollar store. The felt pieces that I found at a different dollar store were slightly different size and some excess had to be trimmed off, but overall I find the 8x10" size works well. Hope that helps!

  • @Tech_Otter

    Just gonna say, there's nothing wrong with using painter's tape. Spraying both items you wish to glue is part of the instructions on the can. Just remember to remove the painters tape BEFORE applying the felt, that way there's no adhesive on the sides that the felt will stick to. That was the real mistake in the video 'cause spray adhesive is just contact cement in a can.

      If you have access to a 3d printer, you could print out a set of painters pyramids and then when done with the staining, let the tray rest on top of the pyramids, with the inside of the tray resting on the tips of the pyramids. That way all parts of the tray will have decent air flow, and as the inside of the tray will have the felt glued to it anyhow you're not messing up any of the surface details this way. Hope that helps!

    okay with all thease DIY about making dice trays there is no video or text documents online about why to use a dice try and what are the size requirments/use rules that people have when using dice trays for fair gameplay

      There is no reason that you HAVE to use a dice tray. My players play on my table which has a felted blanket on it for comfort when we play, so they like using a tray to make sure that their dice don't end up cocked/crooked when they roll.
      There is no impact on using a dice tray vs not in fair gameplay.
