    I love D pentaloris, they're absolutely gorgeous. The only thing I find confusing with them is they're supposed to be terrestrial yet ours seem to live and Web at the very top and this seems quite common having spoken to our breeder and other people in the hobby

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +3

      Hi, Megan! They really are gorgeous spiders! And I've heard others say the same thing about them (which is where I think the arboreal thing comes from). Although they've been observed in burrows in the wild, it seems that they can act semi-arboreal when in captivity.

    Creeping Fig likes humidity! They tend to require a little bit more water than a Pothos. Peperomia is quite the opposite, liking dry roots. When you water, be mindful of how much you water. Peperomia roots will rot if left sitting in wet substrate.
    Excellent video! I'm so excited to experiment with more plants in my enclosures.

    Love these!! I have been looking for these since I got into the hobby in beginning of December (actually bought my first T 2 days after you posted this and this video made me want a pentaloris), and could not find one forever. Finally last Saturday I was looking at Swift Invert's website and they had them so I ordered one (hopefully female!) My friend has a sub adult female though so either way it's okay. I also ended up ordering a T. epicureanum, S. calceatum and he gave me a freebie T. albo Honduran, so now I have both T. albo species! Glad to see your bio's are working out!

      I also plan to do a bioactive for my P. regalis. Do you think I could do one for her in a sub adult enclosure? She is 3" in one of those Zoomed creature 3g enclosures? Wait, did I just hear you say you're working on a "whats next/intermediate species" video? Can't wait. My collection of NW are growing up. Lots of molts, feedings, re-housing etc. I think I'm ready for the next level stuff...My A. geniculata is still a frightening beast during transfers and feedings. My GBB is getting a little bossy as well.
    I've watched all your recent bioactive enclosure videos. Nice to see these new enclosures. Good to hear that you like the Biodude stuff. Lately, I've been running coco fiber, excavator sand, sphagnum moss, and vermiculite. It seems to work fairly well. I no longer use soil. It always made me nervous and it tends to mold in higher humidity enclosures.

    Hey Tom love your videos and your podcasts! Long time viewer and listener and wanted to compliment your clarity and quality of material. I have found your content very helpful and instructive. I am fairly new to the inverts hobby started when I needed to breed roaches crickets and other feeders for my reptiles and amphibians. I found your channel and podcast and it has greatly helped my confidence in keeping tarantulas. I really appreciate your approach to divulging information about the hobby from a teaching stand point. I'm not trying to gush I just want clarify that your content has been a big stepping stone from being mildly arachnophobic to an enthusiastic and passionate keeper of these seemingly at first "unlovable" creepy crawlies. I have 10 species of tarantula now and I'm completely fascinated with them. P.S. How can we convince more people that 5 inch spiders and 6ft snakes are no more deadly than the average dog, love dogs by the way too😊

    If you have willow trees anywhere near you, take a clipping from it and put it in water. Then when it gets roots you can plant it somewhere outside and save the water. Willow water will stimulate plant growth and you can root nearly any plant in it and it will grow as well as helping established plants grow better.

    Don't know which enclosure you kept Peperomia in, but in general, that genus likes humidity, but prefers that the substrate dry between waterings. So if the soul was continuously moist, that would rot the roots.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +1

      The humidity is likely the issue then! I believe that I over-watered the first one, but the other two I was letting dry out in between before watering them again. I don't know that the humidity inside the enclosures was enough to keep them healthy. Thank you so much!

    • @growgreatgrub
      @growgreatgrub 4 года назад

      Some of the common species (like P. obtusifolia) are quite forgiving about humidity (only come of the Peperomia species I keep kick up any noticeable fuss during dry winter & some rooms can get down to 13% with only some biweekly misting from me) so another possibility is lack of appropriate light. Pothos plants tend to be much more adaptable to low light -- another reason why they are thriving by comparison.

    For some reason I'm more terrified of my D. pentalorus than I am any of my pokies, baboons, or centipedes. Also, mine is 100% fossorial. We spent the first 5 months of our relationship with me craining my neck with a flashlight looking under her enclosure to make sure she wasn't moulting before feeding day. I also saw in someone else's video that these are a species that are easy to over feed and shorten their life span. Can anyone else confirm?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Sounds like you have a hot ticket there! Although I've heard from folks that have very laid back D. pentaloris, I've also heard from many who have very skittish ones. As for overfeeding them, you could possibly shorten the lifespan of a male just a bit, but it wouldn't really impact a female. Tarantulas eat until they go into premolt. A spider that is fed a lot will go into premolt earlier, but will also usually take longer before it actually molts.

      How cold does it get? For most, room temperature is between high 60s to mid 70s or so. For most people, if you're comfortable with a tshirt on, then your tarantula will be fine. If it dips below that, it might be a bit too chilly.
