  • The Today Show has had an exclusive interview with Dean Watson, the founder of the Watson Headache Institute, and Watson Headache Approach. Bertrand Doeuk from the Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic, as well as, Roger O'Toole from the Melbourne Headache Centre were also featured in this exclusive interview.
In this interview Dean Watson explains how there are approximately 3 million migraine sufferers in Australia. The exact cause of migraines is reported to still be widely misunderstood. More and more research has revealed a new possible cause of what is creating migraines. Experts are now pointing to a sensitised brainstem as the high likely cause of migraines.
Dean Watson indicates there has been decades of research and billions of dollars spent researching the brain itself, as a potential cause for migraines, however nothing to this date has been found in the brain to cause or result migraines. Dean indicates that unfortunately the neck itself has not been heavily researched, and more than likely the neck has a strong contributing factor to create migraines.
The brainstem is located below the brain, and extends down to the upper three vertebrae of the neck. Experts indicate a fault in the first three joints in the neck, to result in a sensitised brainstem. Once the brainstem is hyperactive it can create pain pathways to travel into the head, whereby sufferers perceive the pain as migraine type pain. Along with a sensitive brainstem, migraine associated features such as nausea, vomiting, aura, neurological symptoms, sensitive to light, sound and smell can then be created.
Imagine a life free from headaches 😇🙏💆

This explains a lot, I suffer from chronic migraines since I was 9. Anything and everything can trigger my headache or migraines. Whether its eyes, toothache, ear, any part of my body hurts, I get a horrible headache, later on, turns into horrible migraines.

So this "new treatment" of moving joints in the neck is...basically what chiros have been doing since forever?

Dear Aaron, unfortunately this technique is not a chiropractic technique. There are no 'clicking' or 'clunking' manipulations done to the vertebrae of the cervical spine. For further information feel free to visit: brisbanemigraine.com.au/the-assessment/ for further information.

Ben talking over and butting in is so annoying!! This practice is what a chiropractic normally does. I hope there's a variation. Worth checking into.

Hi Louise. Our treatment, while definitely still working on the spine (as a chiropractor does), is quite different to the treatment that you would expect to find there. If you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them.
