    My first time I followed anyone online was a family on bikes, parents and 2 kids, rode their bikes from the artic circle all the way to tip of south america. It was not video, but a blog with pictures. It seemed like an impossible task, but they did it. Crazy to imagine what people can do. You got this.

    One hiker said to put hot water in a water bottle and put it between your legs bc there's a main artery. Put your puffer down by your feet.....and eat something before you go to sleep bc it creates energy to metabolize the food creating heat. All.these before bed will keep you warm.

    I have a smallish nalgene bottle that I fill up with hot water at night. Stick it in a big wool sock and that saves me from the cold at night. Less waste too! Actually, what you were chunking up on the ground, that cold morning, was needle ice! Its a really cool phenomena similar to frost flowers. (which you should be on the lookout for as well.)

    I enjoy your talking about your gear. Do you get moving faster in the morning when its cold? Getting off trail because its cold, I think, is a physical reason. The body feels cold and can have medical issues if over exposed. I really like how you talk about everything. Like a running dialog. Thanks for the scenery shots. Beautiful.

    Cold at night 🥶 . Get a alloy/metal water bottle, before bed fill with boiling water, place bottle in sock, put in sleeping bag to pre warm bed and you have a hot water bottle to sleep with. Plus you have unfrozen water to make a cup of tea/ coffee in the morning.

    What beautiful scenery! 😍
    We do the conqueror challenges, they are virtual walks from all over the world so the AT is on there, I’m just starting the Camino and just completed the Inca trail, for every 20% of the challenge completed they plant a tree and save plastic going into the ocean, you pay like £25 to join a challenge and you get gorgeous medals posted to you at the end, you get postcards from your trail and follow where you go on the app, it keeps you fit and saves the planet at the same time! We hike often but I also go on my treadmill to rack up the miles. We also eat a plant based diet which is like vegan on steroids 😂 usually vegan on a weekend though, so we do our bit where we can, every little helps!
    Lovely to see Will & Avalon again, we’ve missed you Avalon! 💕 xx

    I make something they call unpaper towels instead of paper towels.
    I carry a spork thing I use for backpacking and use that rather than plastic ware.
    Also carry a metal straw . Fits into a little holder perfectly to stay clean until I need it. I rarely go out but sometimes places I go serve their food w plastic ware.
    I don't use plastic water bottles. Carry my own
    I also compost 🤷🏼‍♀️ not sure if it lessens my carbon foot print but it creates less trash and I usually use it for my plants once it's composted.
    I use castle soap. They say it's better for the environment.
    When backpacking I don't use toilet paper. I use my kula cloth. I also carry a bunch when we travel. 😊
    So not a whole lot but hopefully It helps create a little less chemicals and less trash in the world.

    Wow! Postcard views today! I have purchased silicone straws which I love and they're easy to clean. I also cut up the plastic thingys that hold six packs together so they don't strangle any creatures. What are those called, btw? I also cut up plastic bags of any kind so animals can free themselves from them easier. I remember to put caps, tops and lids back on containers before putting them in my recycle bin. I don't know if what I'm doing is helping. I just picture myself as a small creature trying to release myself from these things and what would help it from not happening. What else could I do at home to help before throwing items away?

    Too cold would be mental IMO. I got trench foot a week into the Superior trail - my foot was already tingling when I walked, the next stage was gangrene. It took me off trail for the year - and that was a physical reason.

    • @WorldTowning
      @WorldTowning  6 месяцев назад

      OH wow that sounds awful. How cold was it?

    • @uebeleart
      @uebeleart 6 месяцев назад

      It got down into the 40s some days, so not too cold. It was VERY wet though - some areas meant walking in ankle high water on the trail, or mud that could surprise you by being calf deep. My feet never really dried out, and I got a blister, which turned into a nasty ulcer and trench foot. :/
      We do a lot of winter camping and hiking though. Love it. Our annual tradition is to camp New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day.

    How many daily miles do you need to complete it in 6months. ??

    • @LynnStAubin-od5qe
      @LynnStAubin-od5qe 6 месяцев назад +1

      365~2=182.5 days. 2197.4~182.5=12.04 miles a day. With zero days, and blue blaze miles that don’t count, they have more actual miles to walk. That’s another reason a lot of people end up quitting. They literally wear their bodies down trying to constantly do big miles. Sunshine and Captain are doing it right.

    • @WorldTowning

    There are so many ways to prepare for your day...trail advice, weather advice, next stop advice. 😮 any chance you would be up for trying 2 weeks or so and just hiking without checking what is ahead until you meet with it? It's making the trail "soft" and by extension, making you not real thru Hikers's, IMO. Can't anyone use all those helps and get by or opt out to a lodge? Yes! Just try to navigate on your own for a few weeks...see what you're made of. Please don't read into this, that I'm saying you're not made of much, trust me, I get what you're doing is not a piece of cake. But try to see what it's like to fend for yourself. IMO there are way too many helps on the AT. Just hike, and see where the next sleeping site is because you came across it, not because the app told you🙄. If you haven't read Grandma Gateway, omg, you have to! She was a 60+ woman who had ahelluva marriage situation and ahelluva lot of kids that she just needed a walk, and walked the AT. No apps, just the kindness of strangers as hey came up. She walked that sucker 3 freakin times! True badass.

    • @WorldTowning
      @WorldTowning  6 месяцев назад

      Funny you suggest that. We actually did very little research about what is ahead before we got on the AT and currently do little compared to most. Besides Chica and Sunsets hostel and our work/school days we let it all unfold authentically. Could we do more, probably now that school is done, but Captain does still have his business. It is one of the reasons we missed Bunion as we had no idea what it was and we were not feeling going off trail. However, I like the suggestion. Maybe one day we only look at the weather, but we don't check terrain or anything and vlog it like that. Sounds fun.

    If you are cold in your sleeping bag and wearing a down jacket; cold feet and hands while on the trail; wet feet when raining ................ you have an equipment problem .............. Pointing out critical errors in a constructive way is my way of saying yuuz guyz need to have serious discussion with some of the other hikers and do a bit more due diligence on the equipment you selected. Food is another different story ................ however BEANO helps with gassy ass....... just sayin' ........................... enjoy
