San Antonio, Cleveland, Orlando, Oklahoma City, Detroit, New Jersey, Indiana, and Utah have all played in NBA Finals in the past 20 years. According to Colin's NBA, none of those teams would be in the NBA. Maybe there are too many teams in the league, but 14? That's way too low. Plenty of room in the NBA for mid-market teams. Will they ever win as consistently as the Lakers? Probably not, but look how much that title meant to Cleveland this year or how much making the finals meant to Orlando. Those seasons also make sports great.
If you limit the NBA too the major cities, the average level of talent goes way up, and teams are a lot better on average. More people in larger markets, and when teams are good, fans support more. You'd more than make up for the loss revenue from small markets being cut out.
I rather jazz move to STL then jazz remaining in Utah of all city we have 2.8 close to 3 million ppl in st.louis metropolitan area top 20 in us best championship city with gold best sports historical city and state in the world St.Louis MO Colin is always dead wrong but u gotta have right city for more money my city are hungry for all team not just hockey and baseball
Insane to not include the raptors. 4th largest city in North America, and is in Southern Ontario which has a population of over 10 million. If you look at their players, everybody seems to love playing there.
@Bob Brock Hasn't been a problem for the Blue Jays or the Raptors. Toronto is on par with Chicago and Boston for size. If you're the kind of person who likes big cities, it'll more than fit the bill. And being in Toronto will feel very much the same as any American city of similar size.
Making the league smaller doesn't help parity. Back when the NBA was 8 teams the Celtics still had most of the good players and won the title every year.
Jonathan Martinez I feel like no matter how small the NBA gets there's still gonna be one team that has a better roster than everybody else and wins anyway
No, because if today there were 14 teams and the big money contracts, the shitty players would never get a chance today. In the NBA today, there are a lot of shit players that PLAY and EARN a lot of money, but suck and as a result, the better players are getting away from them and those franchises.
Just another video where Colin essentially mocks middle America. He loves to make fun of, "small town football guy" and "hillbilly college fan." In Colin's world only big cities and elitists should be able to enjoy live sports, the rest of the country can watch, "their local high school team," because they don't have a Fortune 500 company near by. Ridiculous. I agree the sports market is over saturated, however, Colin's prescription for that is ridiculous. A 14 team league would get old fast.
Listen to DeRozan and Lowry declarations. They both knows Toronto doesn't give a shit about Raptors until playoffs. Hockey is the number 1 sport in Canada, not basketball. I would still put them on the list but this is not a shame either.
I just don't understand. Why is this all of a sudden a big issue, Lebron has sat out plenty of games. The Heat sat out games all the time, Pop has been doing it for years with the Spurs
Yes but they practically gave this game away. They just have to take time off by stepping on the court for a few minutes and it's all good. NOT like this.
Jovin it's their life. It's a long season and they know they'll make the playoffs. We've entered the grind of the season where games are all about staying healthy. Instead of dwelling on the fact that players are doing what they can to stay healthy, why not watch some of the talent that doesn't get talked about. Some players will barely be able to walk when they're 60 because of their knees, they can take a few days off.
Dude, I live in Brazil, I was in Sacramento for my first and possibly last NBA game of my life, Rockets x Kings. I'm a huge fan of Cousins and Dwight and neither played played that night, was I a little sad? Yeah, but the game was still great.
Altairograph they need rest. They all have the same workout schedule, they workout as a team, so they get tired, as a team. Sure they're younger, but they'll still get gassed during the season. Be upset all you want that grown men decided that they wanted a day off, and I'm pretty sure they've earned it.
Montreal should have a nba team. They love basketball over there. With close to 3.5 million peeps, that's a good city for a team to relocate . San Jose. I'm still dumb founded how the south bay area gets no love. It's freaking silicon valley.
All right for all you dumbfucks that keep saying the Warriors are for San Jose fans. It's not. Warriors will be in San Francisco. That's 50 miles away from San Jose. Commandosoap777 Yes I know what he meant. Phoenix is the 6th biggest city in the country and easily the biggest in the South West so it should have a team. Toronto is obvious
I agree. Think 20 teams should be sufficient for the NBA. Hate to see stars stranded on these teams that you just know can't compete for playoff spots. Utah management keeps the Jazz competitive, the location keeps Superstars away. I do feel the NCAA should go away from zone style defenses..doesnt really prepare them for the NBA to me.

Patrick Haines Central Florida is blowing up, better to have a team there than Cleveland or Minnesota. Cleveland being in the map for LeBron but still.
Don't want players sitting out games? Shorten the regular season. 82 games is insanely long for basketball and the amount put into it. When you start featuring back-to-back games and 4 games in a week, it's ridiculous.
Sorry, but when you sign up to make millions of dollars, you don't get to complain about where you play as far as geography is concerned. You know what you are getting yourself into.
if you start with 14 you will eventually have expand because of the pool from the ncaa would make it impossible to motivate players to play college basketball and everyone would loose money
Eduardo Gil but 30 teams is too many. I'd say 20 would be good. The way the league is set right now less than half have a star player, with less teams, teams are overall better therefore the best of the best are playing, and creating a better product
Colton Park Philly Orlando Brooklyn Milwaukee (Giannis is good but no star) Lakers Denver Atlanta (Paul and Dwight are good but not stars) Charlotte Utah Boston (Thomas is good but no star) Miami (Whiteside is their best player, not a star) Detroit Phoenix That's 13 and there's a bunch of teams with young good players that aren't superstars either that I didn't mention. ThePatriotChris Detroit has Drummond and I would disagree with Antetukumpo but other than that I would say this is pretty fair. Was just curious on your stand
No pro basketball player wants to play in Minnesota or Denver. Atlanta and Miami's fan base support doesn't justify you having teams there. Just because Seattle has 1.2 million Indian software engineers doesn't justify them having a team.
Less teams, less games, less resting, less complaining you say I say less players, even with less teams they still played 82 games back in the 70s so same amount of resting, and the biggest factor LESS MONEY.
A lot of times when players rest its because they're sore/hurt like Lebron with his tweaked back or Kyrie with his sore ankle. They could still play through it but their teams gonna make the playoffs anyway so they don't have to. I don't think less games would help because these guys play basketball every day anyway so they're still going to get these minor injuries.
No he's right...Shit, there are only about 5 times EVERY year that even has a shot at a ring...Some teams have not had more than 35 wins for like 8-10 straight years!!!
***** Yes. If resting is going to be a theme then the prices for all games should be the same. Why should a fan have to pay 2x the price when they face the cavs when all the stars could rest its as good as taking a gamble. With less teams a large section of society will never ever get to see games.
Lebron James is my favorite player. Last year I drove 6 hours to go to an NBA game to see him play. I figured I wanted to see him play in person at least once. He sat for that game. I was crushed. I bought tickets to attempt to see him again for next month. I am hoping and praying he plays this time.
Julian Styles or you can win in front of your home town who supports the franchise emotionally and financially. No one cares about some hypothetical fans from Memphis that want to see Lebron play
Colton Park tickets are more expensive when high profile players come to town. a cavs home game is cheap when Memphis comes to town. But when Cavs go to Memphis those tickets are expensive because it's the only chance LeBron comes to town.
Colton Park help aid whatever word you wanna use you're not gonna convince me that him sitting that one game will decide the fate of a championship. If you're not hurt that's a lazy excuse to me. The fans no matter what city help make the players check so he should care. Lol you honestly wouldn't be upset though in that scenario I gave?
Yea no one said that one game would decide who wins the title, thats what you keep implying im saying which is why I used the word help but you dont seem to get that. If I was in the scenario you gave it wouldn't faze me one bit because I'm a grown adult and I'm not gona cry about an athlete who is consistently playing in the middle of June every year wanting to take a game off. If anything I would be happier knowing that my home town team has a better chance of winning
Sorry Colin but New York needs 2 teams for each popular sport. Knicks and Nets, Yankees and Mets, Jets and Giants, Rangers and Islanders. 2 teams for LA also.
I agree and disagree - 14 is too few teams, but there needs to be a cap on the numbers of teams in any league which means more dilluted play and terrible teams for mediocre franchises. That's what some of the leagues are trying do. Put NFL/NBA/MLB to places where players do not want to play or places where the citizens are not asking for a team. I never understood moving a team to place with non-supportive fan-base. With the same team being able to keep its superstars and key players with low attendance.
NBA will be boring with only 14 teams. Of course a guy from a big city will say something idiotic and selfish like this. Wouldn't watch the NBA if they only had 14 teams. Some small market teams their NBA team means a lot because they dont have much to do.
I actually agree 100% even tho he axed my City out (Milwaukee). The competition would be so amazing and every year we would probably get a new champion
The problem here is that a lot of good players lose their jobs if you reduce it to 14. A lot of good role players would have to find jobs elsewhere. I like the current NBA- everyone has a chance to win. There are plenty of times that people have succeeded in small markets and brought those teams success. At this point, the NBA would destroy its reputation if it cut just over half of the league. Every team has a rich history. Every team has a story. Every team has had a chance to win. Now, some places don't know HOW to win, but if you deflate the league, it's less fun. Here's what you do, Mr. Cowherd: take the 16 best teams and do the playoff bracket that way. Don't destroy the conferences, but take the 16 best teams and make the playoffs happen from that. And...also make the All-Star Game mean something. Have home-court advantage be decided at the All-Star Game like the MLB used to do. Then, it's more competitive. I, for one, like the new CBA. That means that there's less of a chance of stars going to bigger cities and forming superteams and making the league less competitive. What's the Finals matchup going to be? Probably Cleveland VS. Golden State, unless San Antonio makes a meaningful playoff run like in 2014. Either way, those are all superteams, with San Antonio being less talked about than the other two. Just make the league spread farther, and make it more competitive. Make the draft mean something. In some cases, great players leave after 5 or so years and wind up on contenders because their team didn't want to commit. In the 1950s and '60s, contenders were built on the draft, and big trades were a rarity. Now, big trades are a dime a dozen, and the draft doesn't mean diddly-squat.
Colin's idea would cut the number of NBA jobs in half. I can't see either the league or the NBA Player's Association throwing their arms around this idea.
It's actually former players that have built this delusion that you're only a HOF/Winner/Legend if you have so many titles ;) It's former players that make fun of the Charles Barkley's and Karl Malone's of the HOF who have no rings.
I love this take. An ideal NBA, an urban league dependent on urban culture and player pool, needs to be in big multi-team, multi-event markets. Minneapolis, not Milwaukee; Philly, not D.C. (I kinda disagree); L.A., not Portland; Dallas, not San Antonio.
So you're saying players don't want to play in San Antonio? Manu, Parker, and Duncan were all all stars and likely future hall of famers and they took pay cuts just to stay in San Antonio and have a good team built around them!
Grant McKee I think what he is trying to get across is that he getting "attractive" cities like NY, LA, Chicago. I agree San Antonio should've been apart of it, Portland is another
You can thank David Stern for the movement of teams to "small markets." He was the one who saw how popular the Portland Trail Blazers were in the 70s and thought, as the lead legal counsel for the league at the time, "we need more of this." So when they merged with the ABA, he was the one who pushed for the inclusion of San Antonio and Louisville (which they got San Antonio), he pushed for the Jazz to move to Salt Lake City, he pushed for the Kings to relocate to Sacramento, he pushed for Charlotte and Orlando to be included in the 87/88 four team expansion (Charlotte didn't have the Panthers yet), he was the one who pushed for the Grizzlies to move to Memphis, and the one who pushed for the Sonics to move to Oklahoma City. He admitted that he hated competing against the NFL and MLB for fans and sponsorship dollars.
When you make millions of dollars who cares where you live. When the season is going on you are training/traveling all over the country and for the most part dont get to enjoy the city you are in. In the office seaon if you want to be in LA, NY, or any other big city just fly up there for as long as you want.
Detroit is the greatest sports city in the US. Downtown Detroit is beautiful and all the stadiums are 15 years old or less, one brand new. There is 4 million in Detroit and the suburbs and plenty of places for the players to live. The weather is nice for 3/4 of the year. Yes, I'm from Detroit but I've lived in Chicago, New York, and Florida and they aren't even close. You couldn't walk a block without seeing a Cabrera, Stafford, or other jersey topped off with the Old English D. We love our teams and our players love it here too!
My priorities are out of whack. I kept thinking, "Man, that's a nice microphone. It's shiny, looks sturdy, produces good sound. If I had a radio show, I'd want to use a microphone like that." Then at 9:50, I thought, "Man, that's a nice looking co-host. If I had a radio show, I'd definitely want to work with someone like her."
no team for toronto???? its the fourth biggest market in north america. Most multi cultural city ever ....even more so then NYC. you just talked about players wanting to be invisible.
This doesn't make sense. There will always be a worse destination. If you go to those 14 cities as the only franchises, then Dallas or Cleveland becomes what is current day Orlando or Utah. There's always going to be worse/better situations regardless of how many teams there are.
Athletes today overall are bigger and faster it seems across the board...so i keep wondering 1 thing about this NBA! as soft as this league is now when literally you can't touch guys and they damn near go check out any hard to foul to see if it's a damn flagrant, do guys suddenly need rest?? If you saw bball in the 80s, 90s, early 2000s you can damn near punch a guy and u keep on playing..a guy could throw u to the ground and you just get up and shoot your free throws yet I looked at Jordan during 6 title runs miss a total of 4 games!!! Guys missed games for a nagging injury, not oh i need a day off for a title run..they missed me with that lie.
This is true but the thing is us NBA fans could care less how much the owners make, we want to see some good basketball games. you think it's fair that a person should drive 4 hours to go watch a basketball game with LeBron on the roster because his or her city doesn't have a basketball team and LeBron doesn't even play? these athletes get payed way too much money to take "days off" smh.
Yeah but that's flawed logic because you're saying the more money someone makes the harder they should have to work. Players aren't paid because of their work ethic they're paid because of their talent. And players making less money shouldn't have an excuse to not try as hard because they're paid less.
Sucks to be small market team. You get someone good for about 2 years and as soon as the leash comes loose they bolt to Cali Hurts man. Feels like having a team is just a formality at this point
I typically agree with Colin on most topics about professional sports leagues however, just because a city has a large population and lots of sports teams, that doesn't mean the teams in that city are more desirable. Look at Indianapolis, not that big of a city (for a capital) and only 2 professional teams, both of which have been moderate to great teams over the past 15-20 years.
The new cba doesn't force you to stay anywhere. Yeah they can give you more money but you don't have to take it and if you choose the money then it's your problem you're living somewhere you don't want to. As for the whole sitting out debate I think players need to remember that without the fans they wouldn't be getting paid millions to play basketball.
I would argue that more teams helps not only the owners, but also the players since it allows more athletes an opportunity to play their sport at a professional level.
more athletes mean that some of them are not good enough to play in a small league but they can in a bigger league. and that means more Shagtin a fool vids...
The issue I have with big stars sitting out a game is that the players don't let the fans know ahead of time, and people spend several hundred dollars to go see their favorite player that didn't show. That's the kind of experience that really breaks a fan.
Vancouver's failure as a franchise wasn't due to economics, per say, but due to timing. The city just wasn't ready to commit and unfortunately, now it is. I'm sure LeBron, Kyrie and Love would much prefer to travel to Vancouver than Memphis.
I need to see full podcasts. Freaking love Colin
Obey The Good Guy Vintage it's on fs1
Obey The Good Guy Vintage everything he said was true people are too simple minded to see the bigger picture

thx :)
This is why I can't stand the NBA fan base Apparently Tony Parker is better than Allen Iverson cause he has titles. No logic
AidenHighlights wtf where did you hear that? Im a major Spurs fan and tony parker is a great player but he's no Allen iverson.
AidenHighlights who has ever said yhst
literally nobody says that/would say that

hes american , he doesn't know geography
@iThoughtSheWas18 Canada is actually part of North America, just like Mexico, Greenland, and most countries in the Caribbean.
Milwaukee has an MLB team, NBA team, and basically an NFL team
You skipped Phoenix. The largest city in the Southwest
Sooooo accurate. The NBA is a mess. Bring back the Sonics
Colin is so right lol.. People want to troll guys on Twitter about rings but when they sit out regular season they get mad 😂😂
King Rex i dont think Michael rested... or Bill russel
The problem is with only 14 teams the majority of the nation will not have a near by team and they will not follow the sport.
is he serious? he had me til he said 14 teams... that's crazy... lol... maybe like 24 teams... but how boring us a 14 team league
PeacemanNOT he literally said the league would be better this way
Less teams,less games,less resting,less complaining you say
I say less players, even with less teams they still played 82 games back in the 70s so same amount of resting,
and the biggest factor
LESS MONEY.
*****
Yes.
Chris Taggart go watch a game in Cleveland. he doesn't sit in clev
They shouldn't be taking road games off. Should have taken the first home game off.
Julian Styles Ok but how does this help the Cavs win championships?
This is why Colin doesn't own anything
clay plane I bet you don't either
Guy Chet okay
I like this idea, once Colin pointed out that star players would just be group together by force it made me think of a NBA everyone would want.
Sorry Colin but New York needs 2 teams for each popular sport. Knicks and Nets, Yankees and Mets, Jets and Giants, Rangers and Islanders. 2 teams for LA also.
I'm from LA and I don't want the Clippers and Chargers here. We only have 1 NHL team and 1 MLB team. The Angels are in Orange County.
and the chargers are in San Diego...
DooWah Thunderclap not anymore
Too Late You Got The Chargers Los Angeles Chargers To Be Precise
Ironmantis25 why they need two? One always seems to get all the fans. Who is a Nets fan in new york
What about defending the NBA fan over the player? Ultimately without the fan, there are no players.
Orlando has had 4 stars.
Shaq, Penny, D Howard, T-Mac
NBA will be boring with only 14 teams. Of course a guy from a big city will say something idiotic and selfish like this. Wouldn't watch the NBA if they only had 14 teams. Some small market teams their NBA team means a lot because they dont have much to do.
B Bartley nobody is lacking in things to do in Portland or San Antonio.
B Bartley 24 makes sense tbh. They should get rid of bucks, Nets, Hornets, Magic, Jazz, Grizzlies, Clippers to Seattle
Actually I meant move kings to Seattle
ThePancakeman25 New York is big enough to have two teams... Nets has rubbish management but shitload of potential market wise.
Magic had
P. Hardaway
Shaq
Dwight Howard
Steve Francis
Tracy mcgrady
Ronald Murphy If I'm not mistaken, Steve Francis was drafted by the Magic before he became an All-Star in Houston.
im not going by who was drafted by the magic im going by their overall tenure. period
i know im just going by tenure not draft
First round 3 game series then next couple rounds go 5 then the finals go 7, that’ll make the playoffs exciting
I would add a team in STL to your map because that would take care off the Midwest.
What about Phoenix ?
This is savage Colin! Love it
I actually agree 100% even tho he axed my City out (Milwaukee). The competition would be so amazing and every year we would probably get a new champion
Colin is wrong because he's just assuming that all stars have a problem with living in a small market
Preach on ✊
Insane not to include Phoenix. I believe 5th most populated city in US. You gave Denver a team, but not Phoenix?
Damn! There goes my Milwaukee Bucks vs Phoenix Suns dream Finals, matchup.
How I gauge Kristen's appearance on this show:
Colin begins to Drool at 9:15
One of her best days.
I'm going to call into work on Monday every week and say that I won't be back till Friday so that I'll be rested and work better.
what about clippers, nets, toronto???
Perry Wang LA have the Lakers already, New York have the Knicks ...
Yeah but I would rather watch my clips then lakeshow. I can see y the Nets but definitely the raptors
Perry Wang lol the clips haven't been to a conference finals ever... the clips are cursed.
Nobody watches the Clips until last few years when Lakers start being bad.
Very well said.
Colin's NBA map is so f'd up.
I love this take. An ideal NBA, an urban league dependent on urban culture and player pool, needs to be in big multi-team, multi-event markets. Minneapolis, not Milwaukee; Philly, not D.C. (I kinda disagree); L.A., not Portland; Dallas, not San Antonio.
well the columbus blue jackets are on a 15 game win streak haha
So you're saying players don't want to play in San Antonio? Manu, Parker, and Duncan were all all stars and likely future hall of famers and they took pay cuts just to stay in San Antonio and have a good team built around them!
He's evaluating cities, not organizations. If the Spurs were run as poorly as the Sacramento Kings they'd be an afterthought.
That's because of the Spurs organization not the city itself. I think you missed the point
Grant McKee I think what he is trying to get across is that he getting "attractive" cities like NY, LA, Chicago. I agree San Antonio should've been apart of it, Portland is another
Last time I was this early the Orlando Magic hadnt choked a 3-1 lead
Jordan didnt take games off like this though
Well Technically Jordan Only Played In 18 Games In The 1985-86 Season
Socialism? Lmao if players want to leave they can. i.e Durant
lol kristine's face at the end.
Colin is wrong on this one.
some truth tbh.
Cincinnati needs an NBA team again
😂
Lol no. Cleveland is enough
The jackets are pretty big in hockey, the struggling franchises are carolina and arizona
where do the fans of small market teams fit into this big market only approach?
For NBA cities, I would add Toronto and (instead of wherever LeBron is) New Jersey. For the West it's either Portland or San Antonio/Austin.
The suns should be on the list honestly
You're right so much disrespect they went to the finals twice.
Colin, please make a new map for the other leagues.
D1 college sports are pro
excellent commentary
no team for toronto???? its the fourth biggest market in north america. Most multi cultural city ever ....even more so then NYC. you just talked about players wanting to be invisible.
L.A. and NYC are the most diverse cities in America.
HipHopR&BLover Jon and toronto is the most diverse city in the world
Awww he got rid of Detroit 😡
This doesn't make sense. There will always be a worse destination. If you go to those 14 cities as the only franchises, then Dallas or Cleveland becomes what is current day Orlando or Utah. There's always going to be worse/better situations regardless of how many teams there are.
Facts
And players making less money shouldn't have an excuse to not try as hard because they're paid less.
hector cervantes Exactly.
Kristine is one of the most beautiful women in the world, no lie
You ain't ever lie
chill
she has a thick snout
Streetsmart1984 I wouldn't go that far but she is a nice looking lady.
this was amazing
Great view against the business bullies!
Really so everybody goes to the big names. Colin is big market bias.
It's Canucks Collin... Vancouver Canucks
I see Bill Hader's found a new gig.
expansion also increases the number of players in the league, increasing the chances of making and staying in the league
Sucks to be small market team. You get someone good for about 2 years and as soon as the leash comes loose they bolt to Cali
Hurts man. Feels like having a team is just a formality at this point
she said "oooh nooo" hahaha
Why is Toronto not on the map tho?
Detroit?
I typically agree with Colin on most topics about professional sports leagues however, just because a city has a large population and lots of sports teams, that doesn't mean the teams in that city are more desirable. Look at Indianapolis, not that big of a city (for a capital) and only 2 professional teams, both of which have been moderate to great teams over the past 15-20 years.
and there are still a lot of players who like playing in smaller cities, they like being the star of the city/state.
The NBA owners also gave LeBron more as the face of the league then they have ever given anyone.
Still finding it difficult to fathom why Mr. Cowherd's name wasn't on that ballot back on November 8th✔️
Las Vegas and Seattle should be added into the NBA.
Golden nugget. Love this video take.
A more accurate title for this show is "The Kristine Leahy Adoration Club with special guest Colin Cowherd."
CC , this segment was a Slam Dunk.
Colin is a legend hands down 🙌🏻
