My son, mixed, came home many times in elementary school crying because he was "too white for the black kids and too black for the white kids." Broke my heart over and over. He was just a gem to me. I told him, and he finally figured out how, "just be you and everyone will flock to you because you're the best kid ever." Little biased maybe, but it helped him out so much to just be who he was.
Sounds like my childhood. Too brown for the white kids and too white for the Mexican kids…my mom used to tell me “get thicker skin, your grandma used to get spit on by grown ass white men, don’t let any of it define you”… that’s just burned into my brain to this day, and I’m 50 now

About 25 years ago a little mixed boy around 6 or 7 years old lived down the road from my dad. As a pastor my dad was visiting the child's parents when he came in from school. He told his mom the boys on the bus called him some things I'll not repeat. My dad took the child on his lap in an attempt to console him. All the children in their country community just called my dad Uncle Joe. The little boy smiled at my dad and said "It's alright Uncle Joe. Skin ain't nothing but something God wrapped around us to keep our insides from falling out." I've used that little boy words of wisdom many times since then. He's a man now with little boys and girls of his own. But to me he'll always be one of the smartest children I ever met. When I get in a tight spot and just before giving up I remember all I need is the strength, courage and wisdom of a little child to get me through the tough times. "And a little child shall lead them."

I was renting a room to a white dude in his 50's, and I would listen to Prager, Medved and Elder all day. After a year, he came to me and told me he voted republican for the first time in his life. He said he thought he was a liberal democrat, because he was a lifelong union worker, but that he realized he was a conservative republican from listening to my radio talk show hosts.

But with this guy, Mickey, the most important thing I did was NOT TALK TO HIM ABOUT IT, I just let him absorb the info and he was more receptive to it because it was non confrontational, and over a long period of time. We cant expect libs to change their entire life perspective overnite, although we would like them to, and we think they should, I mean, its only logical, right? It is logical. I work with white women who literally scream at black people, and gay people all the time if they admit to being conservative, or even not on-board with the SJW/CRT/BLM/Antifa/Woke ideology. It's kind of hypocritical from ppl to say one drop rule when it's no actual percentage to be considered African American and many ppl are multi generational mixed who the same shade as yourself 😅, but after one generation are African American again and don't stay saying mixed, which i think just saying mixed would give us an american only option soon. It's ppl with just 1 grandparent directly from a yt shade person and that person will have 20-30% European but in America they African American box again. I'm Caucasian, my wife is half Mexican & half native. We educate our kids about ALL of their backgrounds: celebrating their hispanic, germanic, native american, norwegian, etc. heritages. Most importantly, we impress upon them that we're all American and that that's what culture we live in -- our ancestors came from (or were here already in some cases) different countries, but we are American. Hyper focussing on race divides. We must unite. We do that by embracing one another in a unified American culture.
I like that. My husband and I should do the same with our kids. We got a mix of a bunch of things ..on his side he's mainly of native American and Irish. On my dad's side it's mainly of German...the others from both sides of my family is Dutch, Native American, Irish, Scottish, British, Australian and something else. We definitely got a mix of things.

As a mixed native and white, possibly black...I totally felt this message and Tatum is absolutely correct. My tribe (Lumbee) were considered "free persons of color" but because we were mixed we were treated as lessor than complete citizens. We also weren't involved in the trail of tears because we were outlaws and rebels. We descended from many different tribes and fought for our homes in the eastern US. We didn't cut deals like the Cherokee or Manhattan tribes selling off the land they didn't even believe in owning for pennies on the dollar. That begins the whole debate over land ownership tho 😅. Last I checked we have the third highest population of native tribes in America...but trust me, the federal govt and history folks don't want y'all to know about us and what we stand for 🎯

I was like no I’m not a Lumbee, Indian, and I had to look into it, and some Lumbee Indians have my last name spelled the same way, which is weird, but my parents R from Dominican Republic and my grandfather was from Spain and he died there cause that’s where he was at when his death happened until today I’m still wondering how did that last name arrive in Dominican republic or was it by that time people everywhere already because we do like to travel we don’t like to stay in one place

I am descended from the Turtle Mt. band of Chippewa's and while I am denied membership because of blood quantum, my family still has reservation land which will belong to me in the future. that land is legacy and history. Sure, in a way it was wrong to make deals for land at the point of a gun but it's way more than most aboriginal people got in the rest of the world and that land, crappy land back in the day, is now immensely valuable and makes native americans the largest single landholding group in the country. It was the threat of resistance that forced the government to make those concessions and owning that land gives natives a tangible touchpoint to maintain their culture and identity. If we hadn't cut those deals and sold most of our land for "pennies on the dollar", we would have no land. Don't discount the importance and value of those land deals.

Story time : I'm mixed , half native - half white . My native family didn't accept me because I wasn't " full blood " . My white family didn't accept me cause I wasn't " pure blood " . My own father wanted nothing to do with me and treated me horrible my entire life . I'm not crying about it just some background . BUT I had two uncles , one from each side who loved me and taught me how to be a man , taught me things , gave me direction . One white as white can be ,blonde hair ,blue eyes ,fair skin . The other dark skinned typical looking apache man , hard as nails scary looking dude . I thank God for them both , blessing me with their love and lessons . The main reason a mixed race person will claim to be black is because of the bias towards white people and by claiming to be black they then have more power and get away with a lot more. I think others have started calling them black too because they're used to hearing them describe themselves like that.

However, everyone always calls me Mexican just because I’m brown. I think it’s pretty cool to get away from that, especially since most mixed race people are “identifying” as the minority race of their bloodline due to social conditioning. Those same people disregard their whiteness and sometimes hop on the identity politics train, trying to get points for being a BIPOC and claim to be “marginalized.” Humans are just humans and not putting people in boxes will lead to less identity politics in my opinion.

Its actually kind of iffy calling a Hispanic person that was born and raised in the US Hispanic. If you do a DNA profile on a lot of Hispanics they will come up as mostly European. My little cousin is biracial. My mother and step-father raised him most of his life, so he was like a brother to me. The thing I noticed that bothered him the most about being biracial, was him feeling that he was unwanted by either race. He never knew his father (or that side of his family), so he had a hard time identifying as "black", yet everyone wanted to classify him as such. I feel so blessed to have had other family/friends he could talk to throughout his youth who were bi(and tri-) racial as well. We don't understand the damage we do negating a child's ethnicity/lineage. For them, it feels like you're negating THEM. They are blessed to be both.
My grampy said years ago when he was alive that he was against having mixed race children because they don't feel fully accepted by either side and it's not fair on them. I didn't like that but now I'm older I completely agree plus there is such a high rate of schizophrenia with mixed race people too. (Half black half white). And they do seem really messed up and lost. Who would want to do that to their own children?

As a white woman, I've wondered why when someone was biracial especially having one white parent and one black, why they and others automatically said that person was black. I never expressed it or asked because I didn't want to offend anyone, but I thought the exact same thing -- What about their white parent and white family. I felt like the child was just taught to ingore their whiteness and their white family as if it were a disease. I've had biracial friends, but never asked because it seemed inappropriate to ask. It made me sad because it takes both parents to create the child (and I 'm sure both parents love their children equally), but socially the biracial children are pressured to acknowledge only their blackness. I had no idea about the one drop rule. That's ridiculous. Why can't we all just be human beings who celebrate are cultures amicabl. We need to learn appreciation of cultural differences without trying to force our will or culture onto others.

My son, mixed, came home many times in elementary school crying because he was "too white for the black kids and too black for the white kids." Broke my heart over and over. He was just a gem to me. About 25 years ago a little mixed boy around 6 or 7 years old lived down the road from my dad. As a pastor my dad was visiting the child's parents when he came in from school. He told his mom the boys on the bus called him some things I'll not repeat. My dad took the child on his lap in an attempt to console him. All the children in their country community just called my dad Uncle Joe. The little boy smiled at my dad and said "It's alright Uncle Joe. Skin ain't nothing but something God wrapped around us to keep our insides from falling out." I've used that little boy words of wisdom many times since then. He's a man now with little boys and girls of his own. But to me he'll always be one of the smartest children I ever met. When I get in a tight spot and just before giving up I remember all I need is the strength, courage and wisdom of a little child to get me through the tough times.

I'm Caucasian, my wife is half Mexican & half native. We educate our kids about ALL of their backgrounds: celebrating their hispanic, germanic, native american, norwegian, etc. heritages. Most importantly, we impress upon them that we're all American and that that's what culture we live in -- our ancestors came from (or were here already in some cases) different countries, but we are American. Hyper focussing on race divides. We must unite. We do that by embracing one another in a unified American culture.

As a mixed native and white, possibly black...I totally felt this message and Tatum is absolutely correct. My tribe (Lumbee) were considered "free persons of color" but because we were mixed we were treated as lessor than complete citizens. We also weren't involved in the trail of tears because we were outlaws and rebels. We descended from many different tribes and fought for our homes in the eastern US. We didn't cut deals like the Cherokee or Manhattan tribes selling off the land they didn't even believe in owning for pennies on the dollar. That begins the whole debate over land ownership tho 😅. Last I checked we have the third highest population of native tribes in America...but trust me, the federal govt and history folks don't want y'all to know about us and what we stand for 🎯

I am descended from the Turtle Mt. band of Chippewa's and while I am denied membership because of blood quantum, my family still has reservation land which will belong to me in the future. that land is legacy and history. Sure, in a way it was wrong to make deals for land at the point of a gun but it's way more than most aboriginal people got in the rest of the world and that land, crappy land back in the day, is now immensely valuable and makes native americans the largest single landholding group in the country. It was the threat of resistance that forced the government to make those concessions and owning that land gives natives a tangible touchpoint to maintain their culture and identity. If we hadn't cut those deals and sold most of our land for "pennies on the dollar", we would have no land. Don't discount the importance and value of those land deals.

BUT I had two uncles , one from each side who loved me and taught me how to be a man , taught me things , gave me direction . One white as white can be ,blonde hair ,blue eyes ,fair skin . The other dark skinned typical looking apache man , hard as nails scary looking dude . I thank God for them both , blessing me with their love and lessons . However, everyone always calls me Mexican just because I’m brown. I think it’s pretty cool to get away from that, especially since most mixed race people are “identifying” as the minority race of their bloodline due to social conditioning. Those same people disregard their whiteness and sometimes hop on the identity politics train, trying to get points for being a BIPOC and claim to be “marginalized.” Humans are just humans and not putting people in boxes will lead to less identity politics in my opinion.

My little cousin is biracial. My mother and step-father raised him most of his life, so he was like a brother to me. The thing I noticed that bothered him the most about being biracial, was him feeling that he was unwanted by either race. He never knew his father (or that side of his family), so he had a hard time identifying as "black", yet everyone wanted to classify him as such. I feel so blessed to have had other family/friends he could talk to throughout his youth who were bi(and tri-) racial as well. We don't understand the damage we do negating a child's ethnicity/lineage. For them, it feels like you're negating THEM. They are blessed to be both.

Because race is a social construct, determined by what you look like rather than your genetic makeup. If you look more like a black person, you'll be perceived as a black person. If you look like a white person, you'll be perceived as a white person. The genetics don't matter, all that matters is identifiable difference.

As a white woman, I've wondered why when someone was biracial especially having one white parent and one black, why they and others automatically said that person was black. I never expressed it or asked because I didn't want to offend anyone, but I thought the exact same thing -- What about their white parent and white family. I felt like the child was just taught to ingore their whiteness and their white family as if it were a disease. I've had biracial friends, but never asked because it seemed inappropriate to ask. It made me sad because it takes both parents to create the child (and I 'm sure both parents love their children equally), but socially the biracial children are pressured to acknowledge only their blackness. I had no idea about the one drop rule. That's ridiculous. Why can't we all just be human beings who celebrate are cultures amicabl. We need to learn appreciation of cultural differences without trying to force our will or culture onto others.

It doesn't serve their power if such a thing as dual races are a thing. All CRT and every other critical theory needs to place peoples in boxes by category. Dual or mixed race people disturb them so they insist that you except woke and embrace what they call the oppressed, victimized ethnicity and also reject one side of your parentage as oppressor. If you reject this then they claim you white, or you have internalized whatever and are now someone who either needs re-education or is uncle tom or some such. Every individual has to be crushed down into monoliths of race, sex, orientation, social position, and place in their box and then intersectionally stacked. When we buy into this, those who invented it and set themselves up as its priests, its elites, its experts have power over us. But only if we buy in.
