This is a great video. Thanks so much for posting, I love the production values: Music, cut away to printed torque values, Female voice over, nothing I didn't need, no umms and uuuuhs. Great job.
Awesome video... you did great while explaining the right amount of oil to use, torque specifications but the only thing missing was the oil type and recommended brands, the bike it's so nice btw
Oh man, thank you so much for this. All the other Buell forums are geared towards guys who have been fixing bikes for years, not total beginners like me. Thank you SO MUCH!!
Good idea, great for those who have not experienced .... I give thumbs up :-). Mechanics for beginners ... more such videos. Dobrý nápad, super pro ty co ještě nemají zkušenosti....dávám palec nahoru :-). Pro začínající mechaniky ... více takových videí.
WARNING, if you are using thread sealant there is no need to torque your drain plug bolts to any specific setting. Just get it snug + 1/4 turn and BACK OFF, unless you want to strip the threads!
Thanks for this. I have had my 2006 Buell Ulysses a year. I drained the oil on the primary and wondered why my dipstick still read full of black oil. Duh! Thanks again!
sweet I still dig that rug Dave come up to Canada and make my training vids! I think this is an amazing idea, (do clutch cable next please, before my new stuff comes ) seriously tho this rocks!
alot of forums say mobile one v-twin full synthetic is the best you can use for these buells... no matter the oil you use it needs to be 20w50. I just bought this stuff for my bike today
I just bought a 2008 Lightining XB12 with 981 miles on it. I am a new rider and wanted to change the oil for winter storage. This is my first time owning a bike. I see you changed the oil at 2 locations on the bike. Main storage tank oil and the Primary. I do not understand why do you change and add oil at the Primary? Can you explain me the difference?
wow! this video is great! I ride a 03 xb9s what oil filter and oil would you suggest for someone that lives nowhere near a HD dealer parts numbers? I was told to use Mobil One 15W50 Engine: Mobil one Gear Oil 75W90 idk about the filter would this be ok? anyones help would be great! thanks :)
I have a 2001 Thunderbolt I like the newer XB models but it would scare me to have one since Buell is no longer in business what if that engine needs rebuilt where are you going to get the parts for that nothing in those newer engines is Harley proprietary that's the only thing that worries me getting me a new one
I believe it is only 2 1 quarts into the swingarm after the 4 oz that went in the oil filter. Total is 2.5 quarts. Make sure to check the level but do not over fill.
It can't hurt, but considering that the primary oil isn't exposed to combustion gasses the way engine oil is, it's probably safe to let i go to every other engine oil change, so 6000 miles primary, 3000 miles engine oil. Check the service manual too if you have one just to make sure i'm not full of crap.
The primary holds the gearbox oil which is separate from the motor on a Buell. It also lubs the clutch and primary chain. Look after that low mileage bike of yours it"ll be worth some money in the future!!!
its VERY important to not over tighten ANYTHING that screws into the primary case cover. (inspection cover bolts clutch cable drain plugs clutch cover) in fact i would stick to the lowest end of the torque spec scale. just an example if it reads 8-10 ft lbs torque that shit to 8 ft lbs. just to be safe.) primary covers are INSANELY SOFT METAL. like as soft as lead solder. (not really but still very very soft) id say its comically soft metal but theres nothing comical about stripping bolts on the primary cover.
The torque spec for the oil drain plug is no where near 26-29 ft-lbs. That is an error and if you use that number, RIP primary case. Snug + a little bit is more than sufficient.
Just did oil change on 08 XB12R... My lower cowl has small nuts on the backside that are a pain in the A to get to.... I will probably just take tin snips to the fricken lower cowl next time and save the hour and a half it took to do ONLY the oil filter. Why wasn't it designed for the filter to have a clear path straight on from the side? Or better yet Buell should have just left the filter in front of the engine like Harley-Davidson designed it in the first place.
Thanks for all the comments and feedback! I'm working hard to produce an entire series of Buell how to do it yourself videos. This oil change video and the spark plug change video are just the beginning.
Putting locktite on drain bolt ....that's a first never seen or done that on any vehicle I've owned and if you don't degrease the threads after draining the oil out the locktite won't work anyway .
The torque measurements are way off and after going on a lot of forums they say this is a common problem because the specs where misprinted. It should be closer to 10-12 ft-lb. I just found out the hard way when I stripped my drain plug at 26 ft-lb and am pretty pissed that it was the direction given in this video. While everything else was good I wouldn't trust the ft-lb or else it will cost you a couple of hundred to fix. www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/305911.html?1280541778
WOW you didn't drain the crank case oil. this does not drain back through the swing arm or out through the oil filter. It is drained through an Allen bolt located on the bottom of the right crank case. without dropping this bolt your motor will still contain a good half pint of old oil. I know this as I have just split my xb12 and rebuilt it cheers Joe
This is a great video. Thanks so much for posting, I love the production values: Music, cut away to printed torque values, Female voice over, nothing I didn't need, no umms and uuuuhs. Great job.
Perfect vid for a newbie: clear and good visuals. Made changing my oil for the first time a breeze! Thanks!

Always wondered where the primary oil goes in, thanks for this video, priceless!
Jeez...thank you sooo much for these service instruct vids!
Thanks Dave! I just did my first oil change yesterday.
nice video!! very handy !! now the next question is what kind of oil to use and recomended viscosity?
Great video, just bought a 2004 XB 12R!!
great video. I just did this job today and your video was very helpful. thanks!
Thanks for posting all these videos.
thanks for showing with the primary drain and fill was because I didn't know, do to buying a repossessed bike with no manual. great video

Good stuff! I'm sure this will be useful for lots of people!
Got a buell recently. Had a problem getting oil to the rite height on the dip stick. Ended up putting to much in. Now I gotta siphon some out
Something I’ve been wanting to ask you is do you think you could record a vid showing us how to change the front forks oil?
WARNING, if you are using thread sealant there is no need to torque your drain plug bolts to any specific setting. Just get it snug + 1/4 turn and BACK OFF, unless you want to strip the threads!
This video is fantastic, more please!
Thanks for this. I have had my 2006 Buell Ulysses a year. I drained the oil on the primary and wondered why my dipstick still read full of black oil. Duh! Thanks again!
I have a 07 buell xb12 was this video wanted to know what kind of oils did u use and for the primary oil what kind of oil did u use? Thank you
@Timo31
Buell XB owners can find the info in the owners manuel
and if you've drained your primary then you know it takes 1 quart
;^)
thanks for posting this
sweet
I still dig that rug
Dave come up to Canada and make my training vids!
I think this is an amazing idea, (do clutch cable next please, before my new stuff comes )
seriously tho this rocks!
checking the oil. should be done w bike straight up /down, or leaning on kickstand?
alot of forums say mobile one v-twin full synthetic is the best you can use for these buells... no matter the oil you use it needs to be 20w50. I just bought this stuff for my bike today
Dave thanks for this video! Much appreciated, much respect!! Thumb up!
tnx man really usefull hope there are more of this !
Great video! Thanx!

useful thanks for taking the time
is this exactly the same way of how to change the oil on buell xb9sx too.?
do you have a video in SI?
I want your funnel !!! Where can I buy it ?
why do you have to warm up the bike before you change the oil ? where can you buy locktight ?
what kind of oil and weight did u use for the oil case and the primrary case?
Thank you!
did you sell this bike? or are you the other guy on the site that has a white and red xb12? because i have a bike JUST like that.....
@Victor9098 how much does the dealer charge you for the oil change?
How do you check oil on Buell xb12ss?
no crankcase oil to drain? on 2003 buell xb9r
There are almost as many views as there are Buells on the road.
My screws are stripped at the head where I add oil to primary... Can I add it where I change clutch linkage??
Yes, but make sure the motorcycle is in upright position on rear swingarm stand.
Is oil changing the same for the ulyesses xb12x
wow! this video is great!
I ride a 03 xb9s
what oil filter and oil would you suggest
for someone that lives nowhere near a HD dealer
parts numbers?
I was told to use Mobil One 15W50 Engine: Mobil one Gear Oil 75W90
idk about the filter
would this be ok?
anyones help would be great!
thanks :)

Well done sir.
@elrictheblue For the oil filter on my 07 xb9sx I use part #63806-00Y. And it will fit all Lightning years.
this is probably a stupid question, but does the XB9 and XB12 take the same oil?
20w50 for vtwin YES same oil. but always refer to the manual you can find online.
I believe it is only 2 1 quarts into the swingarm after the 4 oz that went in the oil filter. Total is 2.5 quarts. Make sure to check the level but do not over fill.
Awesome. I Never thought to use aluminum foil.
Should i change the engine primary oil every time I change the engine oil?
It can't hurt, but considering that the primary oil isn't exposed to combustion gasses the way engine oil is, it's probably safe to let i go to every other engine oil change, so 6000 miles primary, 3000 miles engine oil. hola, buenas noches, que tipo de aceite le colocas y que cantidad lleva?, gracias

So 2.5 qts in swingarm and 4.oz filter? Or is the 4oz from the 2.5 qts?
yup and 1 full quart into the primary. 4 total qts.
its VERY important to not over tighten ANYTHING that screws into the primary case cover. (inspection cover bolts clutch cable drain plugs clutch cover) in fact i would stick to the lowest end of the torque spec scale. just an example if it reads 8-10 ft lbs torque that shit to 8 ft lbs. just to be safe.)

I always tighten until it strips, then back off about 1/4 turn, just to be sure it's tight.
...and the best part is, I have a carpet just like that in my garage. My wife couldn't believe that's what I used it for!
Same thing for 2005 xb9sx?
How many quarts in primary on 06 ullysses xb12x
So 2.5qts + 4 oz?
That music with the repeated fast beeps was super annoying, but the video was good otherwise, very clear and informative
What oil do you use?
Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin Synthetic Motocycle Motor Oil
Shell Advance Ultra 15w50.
@NanaimoBuddha
I got my buell second hand and no it didn't come with the owner's manual..
Just did oil change on 08 XB12R... My lower cowl has small nuts on the backside that are a pain in the A to get to.... what about that funnel tube you use thats awful convenient is it possible without such an engineering marvel lol
The beeps are so nerrving
?

How about you watch the entire video and stop copying and pasting the same comment on every Buell youtube video.
buell is not a beginners bike
Very helpful thanks
Great video,thanks.
