I really enjoy this video, as a young person (19 years old) who was graciously saved out of the new age/ witchcraft I really see parallels between the Jesus Movement in the 70s and now! There are so many people my age who are hungry for God, and they all are searching for it in the wrong places, as I once did. We need a movement of God, we need people to be saved out of sorcery, fornication, and all the other sins that keep us away from the one true God! I'm praying earnestly that the Lord Jesus will help my generation and bring a move of the Spirit among us.

Hey sister. That is great to hear! I got to saved out of drugs and other pretty bad way of life. The next day, all I could do is share my story with my friends at work, and many of them became believers, even the Satanist.
Just don’t let the church wear you down. Christians and Christian leaders are people too, and they can put a lot of force burdens on you. Always remember where you came from, don’t try to be a big shot. Absorb the word of God, and tell people about Jesus every day, and do not be ashamed. Never be on the defense, always the offense, just not offensive.
      God bless you richly!

@@SM-wv7iu Thank you! Sister actually, I'm a woman lol :). Thanks for the advice! I got saved coming up 4 years now in July. And when I was new in my walk, I shared Jesus with everyone, but now I have lost that zeal a little bit due to bad experiences, but I still need to keep up the good work in Christ, and I need to work on not being ashamed. Thanks again, God bless you!

Thanks John,,, Excellent word, I as a Jewish boy who received Yehushua (Jesus) in California in 1967 during Israel' Six Day War. We minister on the streets, presently in Wales UK, where ever He takes us and have seen many sexually molested dear ones healed and delivered, as well as blind eyes opened and broken bodies healed and excepting Yehushua as their Lord and Messiah, Savior. Your words were so gracious and helped fill in the gaps of the different movements. So grateful to hear your testimony and would love to Midrash (Fellowship) with you, Shalom and Blessings dear Brother.

Thank you John Ruttkay for making this video about your dearest friend Lonnie. Your video popped up yesterday just hours after I returned home from watching the Jesus Revolution movie. I am 71 now and lived in Los Angeles County during the time of the Movement so I am very familiar with it but didn’t get Saved until 1989. I walked away from that move yesterday feeling like there was so much history about the movement that was missing, especially about Lonnie after he left for Florida. I was hoping the movie would have had a dynamic impact on people like The Passion of the Christ did; a real gut puncher, an enlightenment, magnificent wonder and hope. In a lot of ways it certainly did but there was so much that was left out, and it ended up being an evangelistic love story about Greg and Cathy. It was sweet but not powerful enough to draw the unsaved to the movie house. I have a deep respect for all the Pastors you mentioned but the main character, Lonnie, was left out at the end of the movie. I feel that they should have gone full circle with Lonnie’s life story. Greg is truly anointed and has gone on to do amazing things with the Harvest Festivals at the Stadium, radio programs, etc., but Greg was a part of the Revolution. Lonnie and Chuck were the Jesus Movement! In my opinion the ending could have been done more powerfully with a heart-wrenching effect. I was waiting for so much more. Thank you John Ruttkay for making this U-tube video. ✝️🕊 (I was a psychiatric nurse for 35 yrs. I completely understand what mental health issues Lonnie suffered through) Issues or not, God used him mightly. ♥️

I love this comment and say a hearty AMEN! I'm nearing 69 (my husband of 49 years is 71) and I received the baptism with The Holy Spirit in 1979. God spared my husband & me from all the effects of the drug culture at that time, but many of our friends were deeply affected and some died. I believe Lonnie's story needs to be told. I will share this and more testimony from Lonnie. I listened to the entire 1980 Mother's Day service and bore witness with Lonnie's spirit throughout. Thank you for sharing the history of the "movements" that followed Calvary Chapel as I was touched by each one. New Wine magazine and the 5 teachers ministered to me, along with the anointed music from Vineyard, but Larry Tomczak was a "pastor" to my heart back in 1979 as I listened to many of his teachings on cassettes. We encountered Andrew Wommack in 2016 and completed 2 years at Charis Bible College, where we remain connected & active with people from around the world here in CO. God has been so FAITHFUL to bring us to this next great awakening and we, as older people are being equipped to minister to the young people as they receive the Fire of God & His Life-giving Word, and move with The Holy Spirit in Wisdom & Truth. May we live out our remaining days as the "burning ones" who have been captured by God's jealous firey LOVE and move with HIM with Passion & Compassion for the "whosoever" He brings our way.

I was saved as an 11 year old in '74. In the Midwest, I believe the Jesus movement was still taking hold and my testimony will always be that I was saved as a result of the Holy Spirit moving during that period. I agree whole-heartedly that the movie was the testimony witness from Greg Laurie. Which is what I was unaware of. I expected the history and glory of God moving during the "revolution" and I hoped for a spark to start the next revolution. Praying that Ashbury is that spark.

John if you ever see this I'm one of the young men who lived with you guys at the house in Poway in early 1990. Yeah, that was a motely bunch! So ironic I found this video 38 years to the day after I was filled with the Holy Spirit under Lonnie's ministry when he was a traveling preacher in 1985, working with Jon Johanson and Dave Lee in Seattle. Apart from the stint in Poway and a stint in Pullman I've been serving in my local church ever since. Completely changed the course of my life for the better.

Go head and set these self- righteous hypocrites in order. Right now, Lonnie spirit is with Jesus, and have a new body. Some of us NEED a new mouth, because we shol like to condemn the dead. Many was led to Jesus by Lonnie, and he's still leading people in death. Let me set us free in here. No we don't keep living in sin, but when we do, we go immediately to the Father, repent and change, but if the sin overtake us, that's the body of Christ " supposed" to come in and try to help them back. He said he was married to the backslider. Lonnie knew who his source was, that's why he returned, and was restored, ALL that was important was that he made it, STOP tearing him down, and STOP denying his anointing, there wouldn't be a Jesus movement without him. My life is very similar to Lonnie's. I was violated as a 6 year old girl in School by a female Teacher. I received Jesus in Highschool as a Senior, but the devil waited and was Cunning, I knew also what was right from wrong. Got caught up in sin right there in the church with a woman, lived the lesbian lifestyle for 8 years, until one day Jesus said to me, if you die tonight, your going to hell. I begged him night and day to set me free, HE DID! It was if I was never in that lifestyle. I have never looked back, I have not even a little desire. Now, I'm happy with a wonderful man, and want to give him a son. I'm saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost, and is a Prophet, a REAL one. So that's why I pull so hard for Lonnie, nobody know until you have walked into someone's else's shoe, there's power, love, forgiveness and true Deliverance in mighty name of Jesus Christ. It's available, if you have fell away, get back up and come home. I have heard of many people, getting saved before they left here, because Jesus loved them so much, he made sure they got in, look at the thief on the cross, did bad all his life, but that ONE chance encounter, even in death Jesus was saving. STOP bringing dishonor to beloved Lonnie.

That was wonderful to hear, because I had questions that weren't being answered. Thank you! We are all "Ragamuffins", just like the movie portraying Rich Mullins life, where he struggled with alcoholism, but God used him to write one of the greatest Christian songs, "Our God is an Awesome God".
God uses the broken, the unpolished, the prodigals of life, sometimes to show that we are all flawed in some way and we need Him to overcome the flesh and the things of this world. The testimonies of the broken that have received His healings show hope for all the lost.

Thank you John. This video needed to be made. A lot of people will watch the Jesus Revolution movie, then research Lonnie’s story online which will expose them to judgmental criticism of his life and ministry. To our Shame, The Christian Army is the only Army that shoots it wounded. I was stationed in Germany in the 70’s and the power of God was sweeping through the Servicemen Centers much like it did during the Jesus Revolution movement. The minister who led me to the Lord was a druggy surfer dud who got saved on the beaches of CA in the late 60’s. Love poured out of Mike like rivers of living water. I’ve never known anyone like him. I pray our country and the world will experience God in this way again.

I'm so thankful for Lonnie's story and I can relate on how he felt. In 1966, at the age of two, my dad started molesting me and no one did anything about it. I overdosed and died at the age of two. Jesus' sat me on His lap and told me that I had to much work to do and that I was protected through my life by Him and guardian angels. I am going to be 59 this year and I have gone through a lot of things. But Jesus' has always been there for me. I now have a lot of medical issues but I'm not giving up on Jesus' for anything.

John, thank you for this. Lately, I have felt drawn to learning more about Lonnie and to listening to his preaching. I've been grieved when reading about his struggles. Some seem to dismiss him as having backslidden, some mention his childhood wounds, but no one that I have read has shared about Lonnie with the degree of love and understanding you have. This video puts so much into perspective and is redemptive. I also appreciate your heart as you speak about movements that went off kilter. Having gone through such a derailing of a move of God, I know that the enemy can tempt us to bitterness, but you express love and wisdom in speaking about these things and the people involved. What you’re saying about the shepherding movement is so true. We made it through that heavy-handed control. At first when we heard Bob Mumford as teenagers, his messages were so powerful. Then maybe 5-6 years later he came to our church with his “disciples” and met with our leadership (a bunch of young, now married leaders). He had a q&A during this time, and I asked a question. My husband told me later that I wasn’t supposed to ask questions since I was a woman. Our Pastor didn’t say a word to quiet me. My husband said all the men knew that was Bob’s “policy,” but no one mentioned it to me :-) No pushback from me on what you’re saying. That discipleship movement shipwrecked many of my peers (those of us who were saved during the Jesus movement).

Thank you so much for sharing this personal look into Lonnie's life. I felt that the way you shared was extraordinarily redemptive and it was certainly encouraging to see how God helped Lonnie through many difficult chapters of his life particularly at the very end. I was particularly struck by the part that you read where Lonnie shared from his heart even on his deathbed. All of us are flawed and fall short in many ways. As the Spirit says in 2 Corinthians chapter 4 we are truly earthen vessels with the great treasure of Christ within to demonstrate that the exceeding glory is not of ourselves but in Christ Himself...

    John,
Thank you for sharing, this is the most honest well balanced telling of Lonnie’s story that I’ve ever heard. I Like Lonnie am a Christian who struggles homosexuality, not a homosexual that struggles with Christianity, those two mind sets are very different journeys. I grew up gay and in the closet in a large Calvary Chapel, in fact I still attend that church after 38 years now. I relate to so much of what you describe in Lonnie’s’ life. Feelings of rejection, Isolation and loneliness having to process the sexual abuse and the fear of what others might think. I know from personal experience what mental torture Lonnie must have been dealing with. In some ways performing and pretending to be someone that he wasn’t, a sexually broken servant of God. In those days the church like most of society fostered a “Don’t ask, don’t tell’ attitude towards sexual issues. Unlike today, where we have ministries like Celebrate Recovery in the church.
Unfortunately for the last 40 years the church has been busy protecting its children from the issue of homosexuality; instead of preparing them. The problem with that is that the world is now coming after our children, and they are just not prepared to deal with the topic from God’s hart and a biblical world view. I believe that we need a new apologetic in the church, one that includes sexual orientation and God’s heart for those confused. Homosexually has been one of the defining moral issue of our time and all the church has done is put it’s head in the sand.
I’ve met many of the original Calvary pastors like Mike Macintosh, Greg Lourie, Don McClure , Jeff Johnson, John Courson and many others. For years I held a grudge against them for perceived bigotry and the missed opportunity to reach what I believe are the equivalent of the hippies of the 60’s, the LGBTQ community. But I’ve come to realize that we are all human trying to serve God the best way we know how, so God help us all.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for making this video!! I just saw Jesus Revolution thinking it would be fun to see the context in which my church affiliation for the last 25 years has been: the Vineyard. And was caught by surprise by the epilogue remarks to learn that Lonnie started the Vineyard movement with no mention of Wimber. I was like, what? I’ve been to Vineyard trainings, pastors’ and church planting conferences, read their books, met or am familiar with some of the names you’ve mentioned, and had NEVER heard of Lonnie! (Correction: his name and Wimber’s were mentioned in a Berean blog I once read about false teachers.) I shrugged thinking he couldn’t have been that important to the movement, and forgot about it. That’s it!! So, I quickly looked him up and shocked, I watched the documentary. This left me speechless… I went to the Lord trying to make sense of all this and what it meant to my life and perspective, on what’s going on in the world today and on the sexual trauma that has affected me and different members of my own family. And on my own experience with church hurt as leaders. My heart was broken, troubled, and angry for Lonnie and even reopened some old wounds. This video helped me gain the necessary insight I was seeking God for, and helped ease that conflict in my heart. Lonnie’s books are essential for this day and age! Especially after the revival in Asbury, this movie, and the 2005 documentary that many will turn to afterwards. It’s very confusing. Keeping Lonnie’s side of the story hidden for so many years is an injustice. Keeping things in the dark is the devil’s playground. Everything eventually comes to the light! This video IS VERY IMPORTANT. Thank you so much!

I am grateful to you for filling in the spaces missed by the recent movie. My wife and I saw the Jesus Revolution over this past weekend and it was very powerful. However, it appeared to suggest that the gifts of the Spirit were all about Lonnie’s ego. However, revisiting the birth of Love Song and so many of the dynamics of that era were so refreshing as I was saved in 1972 and remember virtually all the details the film brought out. After salvation, the coffeehouse I attended was loaded with Jesus people here in CT. We were outcasts from traditional churches, but on fire for God. In our particular case, we became aligned with the Florida Five. All the excesses you mentioned eventually destroyed the church in the mid-eighties. I came away from that experience feeling much the same way you expressed in this video. I wrote my first book: Spiritual Abuse: How to Break Free From Toxic Churches Without Losing Your Faith as part testimonial, part instruction in how to redeem a bad church experience.
I have now been in pastoral ministry for over forty years and have no regrets. Your video was extremely valuable to me and I will recommend it to those wanting a fuller picture of the man. I also just ordered the first volume of the trilogy. Thanks!

I agree, this was so good to hear, as people who see the movie are really left wondering what happened to Lonnie. I have read his autobiography and am fascinated by what God did during those decades in CA. I was on the East Coast, but the movement swept the whole country. Many charismatic fellowships were popping up on college campuses, coffeehouses were gathering spaces for Christian musicians, Catholics and Protestants were coming together,... it was an exciting time. But there was a pattern of authoritarian abuse that crept in as a result of the shepherding movement, and I know many people who were hurt and left the faith during the 80's (or at least left the church). It's terrible to see how an over-emphasis can skew and distract from the good news of the gospel. I'm curious to know if you are aware of the beginnings of the Jesus Movement on the east coast. Did it have roots in the Calvary Chapel movement? I know the Christian bands from Calvary and Maranatha had a lot of influence as they toured the country, as did Keith Green. Would love to hear your thoughts on that. Will have to look up your book, as I have thought a lot about the abuses over the years, yet long for the Spirit and passion of those early days.

John Ruttkay, thank you so much for creating this video!
I've been watching videos of Lonnie preaching and to my dismay when I go to the comments, I find unapologetic judgements and condemnation from so called 'Christians' who have forgotten the grace of God and His plan of; our honest repentance to receive His forgiveness!
I question how many of them have brought tens of thousands of souls to Jesus Christ, or even have the burden for the lost? Lonnie was sold out to Christ! The saying, 'the higher the level, the higher the devil'...no one can know what Lonnie went through after being so rejected by 'the church', sure, he should have been strong in the Lord, but we are so unloving at times. In the moments we are the most unlovable, we NEED love the most!
I rejoice in serving a God who is Faithful, full of Grace and Mercy to Love me at all times! He rewards me when I seek Him with all my heart!
    Love one another. ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story of Lonnie’s life with us! I was saved in 1970 - Akron Ohio. I too was caught up in the shepherding movement and didn’t move past that until 1980. It’s amazing how this is my story and the story of so many of us. In the last 15-20 years I am focusing on Inner healing and so grateful for things like Celebrate Recovery, Sozo and deliverance ministries. We are truly going from glory to glory to manifest Him through us! Blessings!

I saw Jesus Revolution last night. It was good but I needed to know more about Lonnie. I ‘just happened to land on RUclips’ after looking him up on line.
John thank you for sharing your friendship with Lonnie. It helped me greatly. It is true none of us get out of life without sinning.
I have sinned, Lonnie sinned--we all have sinned , but for the grace of God, His Son Jesus and The Holy Spirit that was/is to comfort and teach each of us, salvation and God’s Kingdom. As an old song I learned close to 40 years ago goes, “Now there is, therefore, now no condemnation, for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Lonnie is home in glory and maybe in heaven I’ll get to meet him. Praise the Lord.

My goodness! Thank the Lord and you for finishing the story of Lonnie. I have not seen the movie yet, but have watched alot of interviews about it. When I saw Greg's video talking about Lonnie, I too was left sad in my spirit. So much was left out, but realize, like you said he probably did not have the bandwidth to go into details. I am left hopeful and encouraged from Lonnie's story and all that you shared. I especially am encouraged to find a believer such as you in my own backyard. I sat here this very morning in my home in Rancho Penasquitos praying for the Lord to lead me back to a home body of believers.....then your video popped up in my RUclips feed. When I heard you say, Poway...................I almost jumped out of my chair.

Hi John. I remember you from the Wednesday night bible study in Costa Mesa that Lonnie was leading. I'm so happy you posted this video. It filled in a lot of gaps for me. I lost touch with Lonnie after he went to the Vineyard, and I always wondered what his life was like afterwards, up until his death. Your video answered those questions. I have vivid, precious memories of Lonnie. Sometimes he seemed so untouchable, larger than life... but then other times, behind the scenes, so down to earth and humble. I'm glad you remained his good friend. I don't know if you remember me, it was a long time ago. My name is Lauren.

Having listened to several testimonies around the movements , this fills in the gaps - perfect complement to the book launch event gathering with Phil A., Lou Engle, and others riding the waves. We’ve all struggled and need the strong support of our family in the faith to overcome, if only we’ll be honest enough to admit we’re fighting demonic spirits in these failures .. we need help.

I went to the church in Fort Lauderdale a few years after Lonnie was there. By that time the shepherding/discipleship movement had disbanded and Derek and the pastors didn't teach it anymore. I was saved in 1971 in upstate NY during the Jesus movement it was pretty awesome. I moved to a college town and went to a former AG church called Christian Center. College kids would come in high on drugs and hear the worship and tongues and fall down but get up sober and saved....

Hey John, I was listening to your video about Lonnie Frisbee. And as you were speaking, you said you were saved or led to the Lord by Harold Bredeson. It’s amazing. He was really a good friend of our ministry. Christ is the Answer. It’s a tent ministry. He was speaking in Las Vegas in 1973 and during the alter call my future wife went up and committed her life to Christ. He became a good friend of mine over the years and of my mentor Bill Lowery. He wrote the article Saint Francis of Assisi rides again. He was with our team in Europe, traveling from city to city ministering. He would periodically call me and asked me to read him the story Word for Word of his article Saint Francis of Assissi rides again. Appreciate what you’re sharing about Lonnie. Thanks.

God was good and things always come to save people out of evil peoples grip when your heart is sincere. Thank God! I completely understand the evil of the church and for many years stayed away. I just in the last few weeks started to go and again have seen ego and church building as the center of the church. Lord keep me safe and finish the race with you! I really feel many spirits (evil as well) come into the church and a very discerning leadership is needed.

Great video! Very informative. Loved Jesus Revolution. I was only 7-9 yrs old at that time, but the Jesus Movement greatly affected me. I was deeply concerned about our country; Vietnam, Civil Rights, etc. I came to and sought out the Lord as a young boy. I can remember wearing bellbottoms, tied dyed t-shirts that I had written "Jesus loves YOU", "Jesus is coming soon", etc. You made a great point in that the hippies were genuine and authentic. I LOVED that about those days. I pray, hope, and watch for another JESUS movement. Lonnie was human...just like we all are. God used him mightily. He is now part of the great cloud of witnesses cheering us on. I know the Spirit is moving, and He is doing something again. It's all about JESUS. Let's pray, wait, and catch the wave and bring many people to the Lord. Thank you for a very informative video brother!

Being in apostolic ministry while trying to recover from the common effects of those kinds of violations is incredibly difficult. I have lived that journey myself, but God knew my history and put me on that journey anyway. It has been both healing and tortuous. My heart goes out to Lonnie, and I am grateful to him for not quitting despite all the challenges. I have certainly benefitted from his faithfulness and from you telling his story. Thank you.

Thank you for this John. It parallels my own journey. Adult conversion in 1974, joined Jesus Commune in Chicago , we fed on the Ft Lauderdale teaching continually. Heavy on submission to authority....light on personal , individual relationship at least in our circle. deep friendships forged in that close living discipleship, and so on. Eventually, God gets you on a good track and I'm so grateful for my relationship with him now and glad to see what He is doing now. It feels like a renewal of what He did back then. It has the sense of His Soverignty...not the work of men. Thank you for more info on Lonnie. The pioneers were used so greatly and paid a price in the course of it all.
