    The first time he was on the Ed Sullivan Show he did the gospel song Peace in the Valley. Ed Sullivan didn’t want him to sing it but Elvis said he had to because he promised his mama he would do it. Can you imagine an artist doing that today? I can’t.

    Elvis is our hometown boy! I lived next to his cousin when I was 4-5 years old. Elvis would drive down from Memphis to Tupelo to visit family. I would always run over to Mr. Harold Ray's when I saw Elvis ride in on his motorcycle or convertible. I always wanted to ride. My mother was wary of motorcycles, but I can still hear Elvis saying Mrs. Iris, I'll protect her, but I can't tell her no. I had no concept of fame and only knew him as the sweet guy that would take me for rides. After I moved away and started my own life, Mr. Harold Ray Presley was sheriff of Lee County. He was killed in a shoot-out with a kidnapper. The kidnapper and victim were also killed. The Presley genes are strong and I can still see young and older distant cousins that resemble Elvis when I visit Tupelo.

    I’m 66 and was fortunate to actually see Elvis in concert five time, Chicago Stadium June 1972, October 1976, May 1977… I also was very fortunate in August 1974 at the then Las Vegas Hilton twice a dinner show and the I wanted to see him again and paid, as I recall $12.50 to stand up in the Balcony to see a midnight show, I was 16 at the time. All of his concerts were fabulous but I must say seeing him at the Hilton in Vegas was extra special because the showroom held only 2,000 people as opposed to 20,000 people, so much more intimate. Thanks for reacting to Elvis and look forward to seeing more Elvis reactions. Take care.

    Thanks for your reaction.
    Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
    Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
    As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ruclips.net/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/видео.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

    BACKGROUND INFO: Written by Mark James in '68 it's based on one night when James was fooling around on his guitar & came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James' wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." (new sub)

    Fun fact : Elvis took the Taking Care of Buisiness motto ( TCB ) from the Bachman Turner Overdrive song of the same name.

    • @beatnix99
      @beatnix99 3 месяца назад

      Elvis came up for TCB as the band name for his backup band in 1969 when he came back to stage in Vegas. Then TCB became his motto and eventually made a logo (letters TCB surrounding a lighting bolt) meant to signify taking care of business in a flash.

    Suggestions? (1) The water throwing incident from '72 Hampton Roads when at the extreme very, very start of the video Elvis called out “Please Release Me” but the band began playing “I Can’t Stop Loving You” - he didn’t stop them, he went right into the song, he then walked over to his glass of water, picked it up & playfully threw it at Glen @ piano -- this is a fun, energetic, powerhouse ruclips.net/video/LNtP5Gd8QGE/видео.html -- just make sure to hear him say Please Release Me & then the water will make sense, & note his little irritated look at beginning. (This rarely gets requested or played but is amazing -- his voice is powerful & a little richer & so fun - hope you won't pass it up.)
    There are 2 from his '68 special stand-up segment that are quite short: "Blue Suede Shoes" ruclips.net/video/Ak5KEbi8Nac/видео.html (2:50 min.) from sitting to center stage -- this is the little longer version w-a real cute finish @ end that the other version doesn't show. "Jailhouse Rock" ruclips.net/video/87N6Qa0D7KY/видео.html (1:50 min.). Since they are short maybe you can do one then do the second after - they total only 4 min. This is Elvis unleashed, doing what he did best.
    I've been watching & listening to Elvis since 1954 age 11. I still have some 45's, LP's & albums & those vinyls sound as good today as they did back then. No one in my family thought anything wrong about his movements -- in fact when my mom saw him for the 1st time on TV she said he's going to be very big one day. Thanks.

    Just check the very final scene, when he disappears into the dark, he comes out in a different Jump-suit ... an editing mistake in the film " That's the way it is ! " from 1970 ...

    • @carolhayar3037
      @carolhayar3037 9 месяцев назад +1

      Because the DVD was done over 6 different performances, I believe MGM didn't think anyone would notice that little difference @ end -- they may have preferred the Chain suit ending to his Concho suit ending. Also, supposedly Elvis didn't know that fade-out/fade-in was going to happen. Btw, if you notice 2 rows of chains are ripped -- that happened during his 2nd audience walk-through -- some people actually lifted him up off the floor -- he said he'd never go back down there again for love nor money, when asked to come down again.

      Cissy Houston was w-Elvis for just 5 weeks in 1969 from July 31st to Aug. 28th. She then left to be at home w-her children. There are 2 issues w-this: (1) Whitney Houston said her mother was w-Elvis for years which isn't true but people will tend to believe her (2) Myrna Smith, one of Elvis' backup singers, resembles Cissy Houston so people think that was her on stage but it isn't. After Cissy left Elvis had three Black backup girls for a time until he hired a 4th. (Btw, her name is spelled Cissy - thx.)

    Good morning, this channel is great, I'm new here, the reactions are truly sincere and that's important, I would suggest Linda Ronstadt, she is one of the best singers. Greetings from Peru!.

    Hearing Elvis triggers me. I don't hate his music but my abusive mother used to play his music all the time when I was growing up so it's both gotten stale from overuse and now I can't stop associating it with that.

      I guess you guys are busy....took a while to get an answer. I had already forgotten about your channel. In answering my question as to why you don't have an Elvis playlist you said it is the first Elvis reaction that you have done and since it has been 2 weeks since you have done another one, I'm guessing he is not a priority on your channel and no need for a playlist.
