On the 26th December 1900, a small ship approached the remote island of Eilean Mor. It was a small eruption of land, uninhabited aside from a small battery of 3 men, whose job was to operate and maintain the isles lighthouse. The relief vessel Hesperus was to bring supplies and rotate a fourth member of the Lighthouse team. As the ship closed in on the barren Isle, the sight of the lighthouse on the edge of a sheer cliff sprung out from a bleak landscape. Joseph Moore, the member of the lighthouse crew who would be rotating in, noted that curiously, there was no flag flying on the flagpole, nor were there any provision boxes placed out for restocking. The crew on the boat fired off several blasts of the horn, splitting the quiet air. As they waited for a sign or reply from the lighthouse, an ominous feeling hit Joseph, things, it appeared, were not quite right on Eilean Mor.

Great story. Don't know the answers. My step father was stationed on a lighthouse in the 1950s. On at least one occasion, after a week's leave, he was returned to the lighthouse without knowing how he got back there. He says they drank and fished quite a bit. Something about drinking "zombies" ;)

Good documentary. I did not know about the previous occupation of the island. I think the later keeper's research and theory almost pins it, and the inspector seemed pretty sure the lifebuoy and other damage was sea surge. I f there was still enough of a sea running that he could only get 70 feet above the landing that is not such a fetch to a hundred foot wave. This one intrigues me since I learned the poem Flannan Isle at primary school and only years later found it was a true incident.

  • @grantwriter7777

This is the best analysis of the facts. No amount of Psychologist jargon would explain the facts, here presented, that the West Landing was destroyed, crane gone, tracks torn out, ropes strewn about. One Rogue wave would not have called the 3rd keeper out of the lighthouse without his coat ... these were experienced keepers. No amount of stress would cause the huge destruction of the Western dock. So we are left with a localized storm. The logs state a severe storm, causing an experienced keeper to pray... then a calm. Everything inside was in order, and the doors closed... so nothing was amiss inside.

My theory for what its worth- the island had long had a reputation for being haunted, so perhaps violent poltergeist activity manifested itself (the tipped over chair and dislodged boulder) causing one of the keepers to flee outside in panic without his oilskins, and the other two went after him to calm him down, but they all fell to their deaths on the slippery rocks..

The island was known for supernatural activity. Shepherds would take their sheep to the island because it was rumored that grazing sheep on the island would heal sickly sheep and cause pregnant sheep to give birth to twins. Though many would come to the island, none were able to stay overnight. There were stories of men being haunted, and many said there was a being on the island, or a supernatural presence. After the disappearance, several groups of men were rotated in and out of the job of keeping the lighthouse. Some of whom claimed to hear the names of the keepers whispered in the wind. I'm not sure how substantiated those claims are, but it's interesting if you believe it

Arok, the film The Vanishing is a fictional retelling of an old unsolved case. The real people who inspired the original book had real lives, families and children. Anna Ducat, the daughter of the Head Keeper who was only nine when her father vanished so tragically, gave later interviews in her life about him. I've read over the legal records & supervisor letters discussing what families were entitled to pension, etc etc. My point is that there are many *real* details in the original story that either don't appear in The Vanishing or have been changed completely....by the way there was no gold on the island either lol.

  • @Rogue66669

I was told this by a old lighthouse keeper on his deathbed:
After a storm, the men discover a boat, a body, and a wooden chest washed ashore. Donald descends the cliffs to check on the man, who appears lifeless. As they are hauling up the chest, the man awakens and attacks Donald. In self-defense, Donald bashes the man's head with a rock and kills him.
Thomas is against opening the chest, but opens it alone, and keeps what he saw to himself.
Eventually the other two give in to their curiosity and find several gold bars inside. Urging caution and secrecy, Thomas proposes they dispose of the body, sneak the gold back to the mainland, and lay low for a year before splitting their shares.
Another boat arrives with two strangers, Locke and Boor, crewmates of the deceased. They interrogate Thomas, who claims the body and cargo have been reported and taken away, as per protocol. Locke and Boor leave, but attempt to contact the lighthouse by radio. Thomas and James are unable to respond due to their malfunctioning radio, revealing their lie. The strangers return with a fiery vengeance, circling the island until nightfall. In a violent struggle, James manages to strangle Boor and Donald kills Locke, using the woolding. Sensing another intruder outside, the keepers chase him through the darkness and James slashes him with a hook. He is horrified to discover he has killed a young boy, reminding him of his son.
After dumping all four dead bodies into the sea, the three men try to endure their remaining time on the island, despite mounting distrust and tension. James in particular becomes unhinged, secluding himself in the tiny chapel nearby. Donald grows uneasy and insists that he and Thomas leave with the gold. James suddenly reappears, apologizing for his behavior. Once Donald and Thomas have let their guards down, James locks Thomas in the pantry and strangles Donald. Thomas breaks free and subdues James by knocking him out.
Finally ready to depart the island, Thomas and James board the boat with the gold. After throwing Donald's body overboard, James tells Thomas he cannot bear to live with his guilt and lowers himself into the water. He calls for Thomas, who helps him drown. Thomas holds James's head under water then sails on alone.
