It’s really funny how you mentioned that Vernon gives you a sense of calm when you talk to him cause him and Seungkwan are actually really close and they’re polar opposites (even though they allegedly have the same MBTI 😂) so it’s really fun to watch the two of the interact cause you never would expect two people who are that different when it comes to energy levels to be that close but they balance each other out perfectly I suppose - Vernon even said just seeing Seungkwan makes him happy

Your analysis that Seventeen members play into each other’s jokes is actually quite accurate.
All of the members have quite the accurate sense of humour, as in what would work or what wouldn’t in terms of making others laugh (whether that’s themselves or others), along with the type of reactions to give to make things funny.
In Korean variety shows, they often call it “sense” as in a sense for humour and just being overall sensible in making decisions that will suit the direction of a show. Of course, sensible may mean standing fully clothed under a shower while holding up an umbrella. But it is this sensibility in knowing what to do to incite laughs and reactions that is very precious in variety shows.
Seungkwan for example, is very well-received by production crews for his “variety sense” as he really makes it easy for the production crew to edit clips and fill up a whole episode with content, because the things he does are really suitable to be aired on tv. Like using palm leaves props to emulate the MV of a different artist.
Seventeen also uses the term “receive”, “airtime/screen time/footage” and “content” a lot. They acknowledge that “being funny” often requires teamwork, and a kind of “give and receive” from the joker and the jokee. So for example, if someone tries to make a joke, and it doesn’t land, or the members didn’t make a good reaction, the joker would often jokingly say things like, “why didn’t you receive [my joke]?” To which the members would react accordingly, either by not reacting at all to make it funnier, or reacting exaggeratedly and thus poking fun at each other. And whatever they do, that footage could now be “saved/rescued” instead of being shelved, since they were able to turn an unfunny situation funny. This is also another aspect of “sense” that’s also important.
And another thing that the members are good at is estimating “airtime/screentime/footage” for different persons. If for example, they noticed that someone might not have gotten enough screentime to be aired, they would often step back and prompt the other person to say some words or ask them to join in on some thing to let them “secure some footage”. That’s also why Seventeen members are often well-received by production crews and other celebrities. They are really keen on team play and just helping each other out.
While “content” is basically creating content to be aired. Jeonghan for example, is very good at suddenly creating absurd situations or some kind of games which would a) create additional content and b) allows himself (and by extension others) to secure footage. But he’s often a minimalist kind of guy, so when he thinks he’s secured enough footage, he would sometimes just fade into the back and help the other members get their footage.
Different members also have different sense of humours. Seungkwan for example is very well-received in variety shows because he can often make something funny on his own. As in he sometimes doesn’t really need a “give and receive” technique to make things funny. Like his deadpan expression when talking about Jun in this video. Just that itself is funny.
While others like DK, often does body gags. Where his humour speaks more towards body language and body action. And Dino for example, is very well suited to skits, like SNL type of stuff. And Vernon is just funny because he does a lot of things his own way and doesn’t have as high of a “variety sense” than the other members.

Mingyu is one of the youngest members so around many members in this group, he respectfully is just cute and quiet. Vernon is younger than him but because of the English, theres a subtle change instinctual to the impied hierarchy here. If this were their reality show Going Seventeen versus a more professional interview setting, he's much louder, shows his smarts more, and is much more active and engaging. Mingyu definitely has a smooth attitude but again, you're looking at professional appearances in promotion for a tour or event going on. If you watch Going Seventeen, you really get to see their personalities coming out when the content is just for the fans and them having fun with one another.

I agree, their personality somehow changes depending on the show. Like here, Woozi is like a sincere and serious guy who loves giving compliments, and that's exactly him during serious situations. Loving how you immediately picked up on Hoshi and Woozi’s sincerity towards each other 😂
It’s probably because they go way back, almost 10 years if I’m not mistaken. Both of them were one of the earliest trainees and were highly skilled. So there was often a sort of competitiveness and respect towards each other. But both of them are also leaders of Seventeen. Woozi is the leader of the Vocal Unit, and produces the majority of their music. While Hoshi is the leader of the Performance Unit and often works with other choreographer teams to make the choreography for the group.
In a way, both of them are kind of the same and have been through the same kind of hardships of being a leader and incharge of the group’s creative processes. Woozi for example always says that the members and in particular, Hoshi, are the reason why he always feel assured when creating Seventeen’s music because they’re the ones that likes his music the most.
It’s also always interesting to see the dynamics between them two. Because Hoshi is often very outgoing in his expression of love and very smiley I would say. While Woozi’s personality is often quite “tsundere”, as in “cold on the outside and warm on the inside”. So it’s always a treat to be able to see him accept praises and give praises back.
Hoshi also has his what we like to call “tiger agenda”. He’s very into tigers these past couple of years. And it has slowly grown from having tiger phonecases and outfits to sometimes calling himself Tiger, like in his introduction. He’s also coined the phrase “Horanghae”, which is a mixture of Hoshi + Saranghae (I Love You). However, Horang also means “tiger” in Korean so he’s very much leaning into tigers right now. And Woozi and The8 are often called the “anti-Horanghae squad” who often tries to get Hoshi back to reality and “become a person” instead of being a “tiger”. So it’s also very endearing to see Woozi (and The8) sometimes indulging Hoshi and calling him “Tiger” or saying Horanghae to him to make him smile or happy. Like on Hoshi’s birthday, or to get his attention.

You are right, Seungkwan shows his love for his members by fighting with them (especially with Dino and Mingyu). It's one way he shows that he is present and he listens to them. With Vernon, Seungkwan always nags because Vernon is the one who understands and tolerates him the most. Interestingly, it seems that Seungkwan has a soft spot for Wonwoo and often shows his appreciation and love for Wonwoo by back hugging him. I don't think I ever see Seungkwan tries to fight Wownoo (and he fights everyone lol)

8:17 This part too! The members (Seungkwan especially) often say Woozi doesn’t say stuff he doesn’t mean. That’s why they value his compliments so much because they know he’s sincere about them.

9:10 Yes! I think you put it in better words than I did. You can see his “variety senses” working and making decisions in his head as to how to make this situation more humorous. I guess in a way you could also say that he’s a very responsible person. Always taking care of others and the group especially.
I really think he’s a very intelligent person, particularly in terms of EQ. Because being able to uphold that “variety sense” really takes a lot of mind power.
The members also take notice of his heightened sense of responsibility and often says to him to relax and “turn off” his variety sense, and let the rest takes care of stuff.
I think In The Soop may show Seungkwan being more present and letting go of his variety persona. Since the show is more based on relaxation. But I think it is quite rare to see him fully shed out of this persona, since it is such an integral part of himself.

  • @feelsblues

actually seungkwan often felt stressed in interviews or variety shows bc he always think he need to bring the tension/energy up (especially if he did it with other members bc he tend to monitoring them to also be funny and active) thats why you realized how he always reading the room. in the more natural setting with ppl he is close to and comfortable being around (which will you see if you started watching going seventeen) he become more quiet. people who get to know seventeen from interviews or their musics mostly would be shocked when they watch going seventeen lol.

You're right, Woozi is a quiet member but when he talks about his feelings especially about making music to his members and fans, you can feel his sincerity, love and passion about it. Same goes when he writes a long heartwarming letters/posts everytime they celebrate anniversaries with fans and when they won an award. According to the members he's the one who worked the hardest trying to get their names out there (calling people directly to get them on tv for example) and i think he's just very aware of what people like to see which makes him very popular in korea but he feels the pressure a lot. Maybe he comes of a little off in english interviews bc he's mostly accustomed to korean sense of humor which is different from what americans like from celebrities usually

Honestly, to me Seventeen has the most unique and interesting dynamic of all the groups in kpop. I saw that nowhere else to be this close, loving, chaotic (to make a good show) but also extremely organized. The way I explain it is "they are their own mini-society". They know themselves so well that they are like a machine with every components working perfectly together. When they arrive somewhere, instead of playing to assign the rooms randomly like I saw with other groups, they sit down and discust who is gonna sleep where based on the needs of each individuals (and they do respects each needs strictly). It is for real VERY impressive to me to see how many they are but how united they also are. And that's why they are so special in my opinion. I'm so fascinated by them and I think it shows, sorry 😆

Seungkwan loves Jun sooo much! HE says here that Jun makes unfunny jokes but has repeatedly said in other occasions that he is the funniest member.
Hoshi and Woozi spend a lot of time together. They usually work out together, and while Woozi spends most of his day in the studio producing, Hoshi constantly visits and ask Woozi to teach him about producing and using professional softwares.
Also, SCoups, Woozi and Hoshi are each leader of a subunit, S.Coups also being SVT's general leader, so they sometimes show this side of taking care of the other members and actively listening and giving them space.

Actually the part here where Seungkwan insists he’s not funny is because - I’m sure you’ve seen in the other comments here - of how he’s perceived as the “variety show king”. He’s so funny and so good at variety shows that people would associate him with that first before they realize that oh he’s actually a singer and part of Seventeen. That’s why you’ll find him saying things like “I’m not a comedian” or “I’m not funny”.
A good example of this is his cover of a song called “Wifi” which actually started as a gag, something he did in a variety show for laughs, the way he was able to mimic an intermittent internet connection in the chorus. But then he actually did post a full cover of the song where he was able to showcase his vocal skills (i feel as a way to show that no he’s not a comedian, he’s a singer haha).

They also have a documentary series and each episode is about each member in which you can see a more serious side of them (it’s on RUclips and each episode is like 10 minutes long)

One of the members Minghao, you may know him better as The8 said on a show that sometimes he feels sorry to (for) Seungkwan because he's the best at variety (he's technically a celebrity in Korea outside of seventeen because of his variety appearances) so he may feel burdened to put on this extra persona. (In the context of the show I'm not certain certain whether The8 said it jokingly or not. I feel like it was half joke half sincere). So this may play into Seungkwan always paying attention to the atmosphere so he can decide on what to do next. But the members have said that he's very attentive naturally so I guess everything intertwines.

Just like how Vernon and Seungkwan are extremely close, it's the same with Hoshi and Woozi. They're rarely apart too, Woozi spends a lot of time in his studio and Hoshi will just often be there too, they're also gym buddies, Hoshi is always making sure Woozi gets the recognition he deserves too, and if Woozi is going to indulge in anyones jokes or bits the most it'll be Hoshi's. They're super close and so in interviews you'll often see them talking very sincere about one another. They're both born in '96 and then Vernon and Seungkwan are both born in '98 and I sometimes think being of the same age like that also helps them click the way they do, which in turn creates some of the closest possible friendships. The group as a whole are super close but there's always pairings or even trios that have, I guess, a different sort of closeness and it's all very lovely.

Even in English interviews, they behave as usual, do not force themselves into using English at all, just say whatever they wanna with their range of vocabulary and comfortably speak Korean. Hoshi and Won Woo are now taking an English course diligently and show some improvements while Seung Kwan, Dino and Min Gyu all display great potentials in their pronunciations. So I'm really looking forward to the upcoming global interviews with their confidence.

Woozi is indeed in the quieter side, but when he needs to speak, he will, he doesnt like to be pressured to entertain or to talk but if he's expected to, he speaks very well. In short, he speaks when it's necessary (of course I meant only in variety shows or interviews)

Similar to you, when I was getting to know Seventeen, the quieter members took me quite a bit longer to get to know (seems obvious but some gravitate towards quieter members and bias them right away).
I think your assessment of Seungkwan and Hoshi is spot on.
Hoshi CAN be loud. But when you see him not "in the spotlight" or high energy moments, he is very calm, he listens to the other members and offers words of support/affirmations when needed. And he is very sincere indeed when speaking to the other members, or about their bonds/relationships.
Seungkwan dearly adores his members. He loves the attention 100% lol
But also, I wouldn't say he's shameless about his jokes and comedic skills. Although maybe that's a tiiiiiny bit apart of his "character". He isn't a variety king for nothing.
Most of what you see is him playing around, making jokes, being made fun of by the members. But he's really close to his fellow maknaes and I think this is just his personality. If you see REALLY early pre-debut clips (like almost 10 years ago), he is EXACTLY like this, even back then 😂
Jun is kind of, what you see is what you get. Once you see more of him, you'll see he's a pretty laid back guy. There's also the language barrier, as he's a Chinese member. He has mentioned this has been a barrier in the past. He can get rather excited at times though.
Mingyu always seems ready to hype the other members. He's positive and usually lets others have the spotlight. He CAN be loud but it's not usually really on purpose lol (like yelling to get attention or something)
Woozi. Again, you are spot on. He's comfortable in himself. And as much as we have an idea of how idols "normally" act, Woozi just rejects most of that and does what he's comfortable with. I love that about him. He's here for the music, the members, & fans and he makes that very clear.

i think seungkwan gives off the vibe of the person who uses humor to cover vulnerabilities but i don't think that's true. like you said at the end of the video, he really just likes making people laugh and will even embarrass himself in order to make someone else smile. he's the "variety show king" of the group and his schedule is always packed making guests appearances on other shows. he's got such a good energy that comes off extremely genuine which makes everyone so drawn to him!

    • @highland42
      @highland42 2 года назад +2

also like other people have mentioned, vernon and seungkwan may seem like opposites but time and time again they are shown to have the exact same personality. maybe in going seventeen you can see some of their interactions and explain because i still don't understand how two people are so different yet similar 😭

  • @veriverycutecarat8076
    @veriverycutecarat8076 2 года назад

If you want to see Seungkwan very vulnerable and emotional you should watch his and Dino's Part in the Program Seventeen in the Soop. They are on vacation in the woods at that program and do all kind of stuff in their free time. And while they are sitting around the fire Seungkwan and Chan talk about deep stuff. But the whole show gives you a better view on their interest and who spends time with who when they have their own time without planned schedules

Oh! And I also just wanted to mention how Hoshi often claims he is an introvert. He's also said before how his stage persona of Hoshi and himself as Soonyoung are different people. The rest of the group often tease him saying he's not an introvert because, especially in content, he's very outgoing and you'd assume he's an extrovert, but Hoshi has said multiple times in his daily life he's quite shy and introverted, and a member, S.Coups has said before something charming about Hoshi is how introverted he actually is in daily life. I find that quite interesting how he seems to know how to sort of turn on this side to him for work and you'd never even think in his daily life he's the complete opposite.

Seungkwan doesn't like being called a comedian too much because he wants to be recognized as an idol instead of some funny guy. He's said quite a lot that worries about how he comes off since he's the one that always represents Seventeen, usually alone, on different entertainment programs. He's very perceptive and sensitive, which is why you see him glancing around a lot trying to gauge reactions.
also about him choosing himself for the best looking member: for a long time he was always told that he was the ugliest member or that he needed to lose weight by the staff at their company and "fans" so he really struggled with his image. the other guys continuously complimenting him on his looks these past few years and him picking himself really just shows me how far he's come since those early days rather than him just being cocky
