The reason we wouldn't marry a 9 year old today is because we actually ARE following the example of the prophet.....a girl back then (and today) had to pass a certain criteria before marriage and girls today don't pass that criteria at age 9 or even 14 so we don't marry them at that age.
Our current "morality" is a result of Mohammed's rulings on marriage.
So NO we don't have better morality today than the prophet did....astaghfurallah!

Things non-Muslims should know before they make any claims about prophet PBUH marriage with Aysha RA.
1- the legal and social definition of child is different from a country to another, and from a time to another. And the view of logic is different from a mind to another. Therefore we refer to biological definition of a child, becuase it is standard and constant. So, according to biology a child is a human between birth and puberty.
2- then if we want to refer to the social and legal definition of child to make claims about the marriage of the prophet PBUH and Aysha RA, we should take into account the custom, law and the social life in their time and country NOT OURS .
3- The definition in Islam of a child is the same definition of the a child in biology. And this is set by Allah which is the creator of humans, who knows his creatures better then themselves.
4- no one would know the situation of a person better than him or herself. Therefore, you are not more aware of Ayshas situation more than herself. According to her and what we can notice that she was happy in her marriage and she loved her husband PBUH.
Conclusion: According to the law, customs and traditions in the past and especially in The Arabian Peninsula the marriage of prophets PBUH and Aysha wasn't a suspicious thing, and it wasn't considered wrong. And if it was, the disbelievers of that time would have criticised the prophet PBUH for it. In addition, in biology Aysha is considered as an adult and if it was harmful for her it would affected her. Moreover, in Islam she is considered is an adult too. And this proves that the islam is the religion of truth because in this situation it is compatibility with biology which is the science of living creatures and no one would know the the human body but the creator. Finally, Aysha haven't showed or shared something shows that she was not satisfied and happy in this marriage, as long as she did not show that it caused her any harm. This means that the repercussions circulating now are new and have no aim other than to criticize the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.

First of marrying Ayesha was from God. Second if both the bride and the groom and their families were happy who are we to object? Ayesha was a scholar andnpreached and taught islam to many after the Prophet pbuh. If she was abused she would have reported so negative about her husband pbuh. But history shows that she did not even utter a single negative about her husband or if she was unhappy infact she was one with vibrant strong personality and a scholar teaching and answering others on their questions on islam. She being a wife got to be with the Prophet pbuh and learnt a lot more and shared it with others. Her being young was a win win as way after the Prophet pbuh left this earth Ayesha kept on sharing the islamic knowledge for years to come. Now being happy with such strong personality with no complains and her father having no complains then who r we to object. She wanted this marriage. Even the enemies of the Prophet pbuh never ever objected to this marriage. It was only brought up by critics of islam in yhe 20 th and the 21 st century. In my opinion the lady won this easily. It's her vs multiple people and they talk longer than her. Do we allow our 12 years old in army as soldiers? During the 7 th century era 12 years old were soldiers going to war. Ppl did not live that long like today and ppl of that time matured early. All the environment factors play a role. They way of life, daily activities, avg age etc etc
Living in desert with no running water and in the heat of the desert without the all current luxuries of electricity power fans and a/c and much more were not available back in those days. They lived in small quarters made out mud and date palms covering the roof. It is said that when the Prophet pbuh worshipped at night and prostrated his head used to touch the feet of his wife Ayesha pbuh lying down on her bed on the floor. This is to give an idea how small were their homes. We cannot compare ourselves with ppl of the old. They must be much tougher not having soft skinned hands like ours living much tougher desert lives.
I recall and this is from about 5-8 years ago the head of a charity organization helping ppl in a remote village of Gambia Africa told me about a woman who was married with a few children and her husband used to go look for work being away from home for days. Her children wanting to use bathroom in the middle of night and their home had no bathroom inside her home and she had to go out to general bathroom away from homes. She used to be scared taking her kids to the bathroom out of her home in the middle of the night because there was no light and in pitch darkness there were cobras in that general open bathroom shared between many residents of that village and used to be open and at night cobras used to crawl in and out of that restroom. Just try to picture this situation and being that woman shoes. Will we take our kids there ? What would we have done? This woman had no choice but used to take the risk taking her child there in pitch darkness. There could be other wild animals being in africa. Reason this story surfaced as donation request was put forward for collection to build a bathroom inside her home so she would not have to drag her kids to that open general bathroom risking her and her children life in midst of the night and her being alone without her husband who used to be away for days working in different areas. Moral of the story is we need to academically study and research the era before passing any judgements. Not knowing anything we rush to pass comments comparing and looking at times of the old with 21 st century lens. Simple! Period!
May Allah guide us all showering his mercy and blessings upon all the believers. Actually the problem is in the explanation of the Muslim preachers there. When Muhammad (PBUH) had the dream in which our Mother Aisha (R.A) was brought to him on a memorial tablet or plague, meant Mother Aisha (R.A) was given to the Prophet by God. Then there's no needed for a marriage contract among the Muslims, because it's Allah's Will limited to the Prophet in this issue. But later after she became a young women, making a marriage contract was now to be practiced by all Muslims. Unless the non-Muslims believe Muhammad (PBUH) is a Prophet of Allah there's nothing the Preachers can do about this. No point in trying to convince them otherwise by giving examples from the Victorian era. She even said, she believes Moses (PBUH) to be a Prophet but not Muhammad (PBUH). Some non-Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to be a Prophet of God, so talk to them. She needs to be convinced regarding 'Muhammad (PBUH) a true Prophet of Allah/God first.
I don't understand how a Muslim can see this as a win. The entire premise is wrong. They speak as if the marriage of Ayisha is a one time thing that happened 1400 years ago while the practice continued in the west. That is factually false, because of the "Example" of Muhammad this is still practiced today in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Nigeria. All due to this scripture. The practice was ended in the west. Ended. Also this is a Christian vs a Muslim, meaning a debate of examples. How many children did Jesus marry? What verse did Muhammad give condemning the practice? Second benefit of her young marriage was she was of a similar or same age as fatima radiallahuanha the daughter of prophet salallahualayuwasallam depending on which narrations you accept, when she moved in with the prophet salallahualayuwasallam he moved fatima in the same house as aisha radiallahuanha where she quickly became friends with her and would remain close to her even after the prophet salallahualayuwasallam death, also she aisha radiallahuanha got the best of examples to follow there was prophet of allah the best of creation and there was the daughter of the prophet who was one of the four perfect women, she aisha radiallahuanha living with these two great people was a great learning experiance for her in every way she saw how their relationship was their manners good behaviour and in fatima radiallahuanha she had a women to look upto for all this
Last benefit to mentioned she lived upto her 60s or 70s where she narrated the second most hadith of sahaba and spread knowledge
