  • Does Malaysia’s recent drop in the World Competitiveness Ranking spell doom for investment prospects?
One economist does not believe so.
Apurva Sanghi said the drop in rankings will not influence investor decisions.
In a post on his personal X account, Apurva, the World Bank’s lead economist for Malaysia, said investor priorities include policy stability, infrastructure quality, and talent over rankings.
He said Malaysia’s primary challenge in attracting investment is talent.
In the latest World Competitiveness Ranking by the International Institute for Management Development, Malaysia ranked 34th out of 67 countries, dropping seven spots from the previous year.
The report highlighted that Malaysia fell behind in nearly all assessed areas, including economic performance, government efficiency, and business efficiency.

Trying to justify. Accept and explain the limitations of ranking and tell what are your plans to improve.

These economists spin a lot. If Malaysia's competitiveness ranking had increased, they would have said it's because our FDI for 2023 was the highest in history.

Malaysia NEP's Rights® triggers brain drain to other countries. Quota chain places on higher education since NEP policy(1970 to 1990) replaced by NDP(1990 to 2020) & Vision 2020(1990 to 2020) along with Look East Policy(japan). All failed. No surprise Competitiveness Index drops.

Ha! Ha! Over the years I read plenty of these so-called rankings, and most are just for show? Doesn't matter if they come from the WB or IMF, the importance is the ability to deliver what U sell (commit, promise). Also many of these rankings have political undertones esp. if U are not with U are likely to be bad? 🙏🙏😜😜
